Toyota High-lift gear box

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I am building my first 3 speed and I want to replace all the metal bearings by ball bearings.

On the manuel, step 2, it 's written that you don't have to replace these two metal bearings by ball bearings.

This warning is mentionned in the high-lift and thundra manuel but not in the ford manuel.

Someone has an explanation ?

Do I realy let these metal bearing as mentionned in the manuel or do I change them by ball bearings.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Pascal

The Tundra manual says don't fit ball bearings in part J7. It's a selector collar which moves along the shaft rather than a rotating part. I've seen it stated on other forums that because the ballbearings are a tighter fit, fitting them can hinder the movement along the shaft and cause gear change problems.

Hope this makes sense!

cheers,

Rob

I have also read here on a thread (can't remember which one) that for these 2 or 3 metal bushings it is best to leave them rather than to use ball bearings; the reason was functional as it was more difficult to replace the metal parts than the bushings and it was better to allow the softer metal bushings to wear out and replace if necessary, rather than risk the more expensive and hard to change parts.

Sorry I can't remember more or recall the title of the thread, but it is here somewhere on TC.

Thank you very much "IBIFTKH" and "taliesin" for your answers.

Some good explanations. Sounds good.

So, I will follow the manuel and let these two metal bearings.

Thank you again for your answers.
