Motor/ESC advice for Egress

Recommended Posts

Greetings all.

I'm new back into the hobby pretty much since childhood and after happening upon the re released Egress kit (which was out of budget as a kid) I bought it. It comes with motor or electrics so wondering what you would advise for a decently fast car but with plenty of power for off road. Assume I may need to change gearbox also depending on motor speed?

Battery wise is Lipo worth getting?

Also final question - can't find anywhere what colour paint to buy.

Any advice much appreciated - have a great weekend everybody.

Hi and welcome to the Club!

I do believe the re-re should come with a special motor, so I don't see the need for anything faster. As for the ESC I like the new Futabas. The MC230CR and MC 330CR might be good options for an Egress, depending on what motor you're running.

Best of luck, and don't forget to share some pictures with us of your Egress build! :)

If you plan on running brushed motors, I highly recommend the Hobbywing Quicrun 1060. It's small, cheap, waterproof, self-calibrating, and has low-voltage cutoff for lipo. I would change out the battery connector to Deans and hook up a Tamiya Super Stock BZ, it should be a perfect match for the Egress.

Regarding the battery, yes, lipo is worth getting. It's lighter, lasts longer, and there's no need to do any sort of maintenance (battery cycling). Just read up on how to care for lipos and you should be good to go.

That said, I'm running a Tamiya TBLM-01S 10.5T motor and TBLE-02S ESC on my Egress. I've already geared down to 19T from the stock 22T pinion but the ESC still shuts down after a while. I'll have to gear down some more.

I'm running a speed passion 8.5t sensored combo in mine, with a 19 tooth pinion.

Hi there, I realise this thread is out of date but I've managed to source an Egress which I'm v excited about. I want it to be v fast but for bashing around, not serious racing.

I don't want to use a Lipo battery as am concerned about the fire hazard in the house so please can you suggest to me:

1. The best motor, ESC, pinion gear and battery combo for an Egress to make it go as fast as possible without sacrificing on reliability?

2. Would you reccomend that I go 23T Brushed motor or should I use a brushless one with NiMH battery?

3. What pinion gear do I need?

4. Do I need to do anything else to the gear box apart from replace the pinion gear?

It looks like the Super Sport BZ motor is a good option but will it be fast enough? It was also suggested to me that I buy this ESC: Tamiya Brushless ESC 02 - Sensored TBLE-02S as it works with both brushed and brushless motors in case I want to use brushless at another date. Is this a good idea or is there a better combo you suggest?

Thanks very much.

That ESC won't work with the bz (down to 25t only) although it will take 10.5t brushless.

Consider a sensored brushless motor or the bz/tz with the hobbywing 1060 ESC.

The tz is the same as the bz but usually cheaper and doesn't have the dust cover. I am a big fan of the tamiya super stocks and you can always cut the plastic tab so the timing becomes adjustable.

Brushless is always a bit lacklustre on 7.2v nimh packs in my opinion but it works well enough if you go that route.

Oooooooouch Just purchased a Egress .

Not cheap by the time it's landed . The most expensive kit I have bought.

Plan to run a 7.5 or 8.5T in mine.

It's too much for me, I've just bought a handful of 2013 parts and beefed up (not you beef) my old Egress. Thank goodness for the Egress 2013 even though I can't afford one.
