What radio gear should I go for?

I have a 959, monster beetle and tl-01, have servo's and a few recievers, but just wondering if I should go for 2.4ghz, or is 27mhz still widley used? (been away from rc for a while!)

I had the same problem a while back, as I was still using 27MHz. I went for this 2.4GHz setup and it's lovely. Fits with the old school Txs but soooo easy to use and you get a 15 model memory. Not to mention that third channel comes in handy for aux stuff such as lights etc ;)

The original Rxs are pretty dear at around £20 a pop but you can get these from Hobby King. Way cheeper and more sensible if you have a collection of car to swap out. A lot smaller too :D:D:D

Looks like just what I am after. Was about the get an funny looking twisty wheel one because of its memory feature but this looks better to my old school eyes.

I agree - I always thought the twisty wheel style were a bit toy-shop... but I have to say, I'm a total convert to the 2.4ghz Flysky FS2 now (the one in the link Mr Crispy posted) - the receiver is really compact, and I totally agree with Mr C' s appraisal - at under £20 for a Tx and 3 channel Rx, it's amazing value for money!

When I got my Lunchie XB last Christmas it came with the pistol steerwheel type Tx as I was curious to see how I would get on with it as I had decided by then to go 2.4GHz and was in the market for the proper one. I'm glad I was able to as I didn't get on with that type so went for the traditional stick Tx.

I guess it's not so much nostalgia but more the fact when my young brain first learnt RC it learnt stick. Now my older brain doesn't like anything else :lol::lol:

I can drive with both no probs, but prefer stick, I also had and r/c nitro helicopter, so happy to 'stick' with that.

Are these compatible with older servo's?

How old are we talking?

They should be compatible with all servos that have the female connections in the servo plug. The really old servos with male plugs would need the plugs changing. Some old Sanwa servos would also need the order of the plug pins changed.

Have you got the link to those receivers you bought woodstock? I really need to convert to 2.4ghz and the code transmitter seems a really good model, plus it's stick! :) What put me off was the price of the receivers but if you can get cheaper ones that would be great. I tried comparing your picture with those on hobby king but I'm not sure I've got the right one. I'll need 4 receivers (to start with).

I was expecting these to be flimsy and feel cheap but I was pleasantly surprised just how well built they are, better than some more expensive sets I've had. It's perfect for a simple, user friendly 2ch controller. Extra receivers are cheap and can be bound to the same TX.

I also use to be purely a "stick" man but having tried a wheel TX a few years ago I honestly have no preference now. Some will allow you to drive one handed which is good if you're out with young children or trying to film at the same time :)

All of them have female plugs, can you buy different plugs for servo's?

You can indeed. Most of the better hobby shops sell them. I usually get mine from Modelsport. I like to go for the JR style plugs pre-mounted to a length of cable, as the JR plug fits most receivers and installation is simply a case of opening up the servo and soldering the three wires to the PCB with a small soldering iron.

I have a tiny soldering tip that I used to chip an old ps2 some years back, so should be ok there, cheers.

Thanks for the receiver link nobbi and the confirmation woodstock. Nobbi this is the best deal I've found so far for the code transmitter and one receiver. £59 + £4.50 delivery. Not bad at all. :)

If you find it cheaper let me know. ;)

What's the best 27mhz stick to go for? I also need one of those for the 959.

Ty

You can just get another receiver and use the same transmitter.

If you just want cheap and cheerful the Acom stuff is ok and comes with a couple of servos if you buy the right one.

The 959 has a period reciever and servos, so don't know if I want to replace with modern, won't be driving it much, maybe I only need a transmitter, would be quite a bit cheaper I think.

You can get an ACOMS one for £15 off EBay but you will need a matching crystal. £25 gets same transmitter, receiver and a servo so not a bad deal.
