mr crispy 2293 Posted November 22, 2014 This might be a stupid question but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I want to buy a cheap 4 or 6 channel FlySky 2.4g digital controller on eBay but it only mentions about using it for aircraft. Here's the auctions 4 ch http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=301365785890 6 ch http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=161145848955 I'll be using it in the UK where you shouldnt use air channels for ground equipment and vice versa. So my question is does digital control also have those limitations of the old AM/FM radio gear or does it not matter? Any help would be appreciated, and if anyone's used these controllers, feedback on them would be great too. Cheers Nic
XV Pilot 1936 Posted November 22, 2014 Nope, it doesn't matter - all 2.4GHz equipment is legal for surface use. Most of the folks at my boat club use 2.4GHz sets designed for aircraft due to the extra channels needed for multiple additional functions such as bow thrusters, horns, etc. The club secretary confirmed this was legal when arranging our public liability insurance. Some manufacturers (such as Spectrum) use different protocols for their air and surface radios, but they all work on 2.4GHz, and are thus treated the same from a legal perspective. From a hobbyist's perspective, as long as the TX and RX protocols match, we can use them where we see fit.
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted November 22, 2014 Would be interesting to see if they are any good at that price. Is there a tried and tested section on this site?
mr crispy 2293 Posted November 22, 2014 Thanks XV Pilot, I couldn't find any firm info once way of the other. Done a bit of research and it seems the 4ch set in the link above has built in trim tabs and servo reverse switches but doesn't seem to have any EPA. The 6ch set only has built in trim tabs for the 4 main stick control channels and no reverse switches, but it comes with a USB cable to plug into a computer and via software you can reverse switches, set EPA etc. I'm tempted to go for the 6ch set for the extra flexibility but I hope such a budget all singing and dancing item isn't aiming too high for its price point?
