58192 King Blackfoot - rebuild

Recommended Posts

Not sure if the King Blackfoot is classed as "vintage" but its not exactly new either :)

Bought on ebay is came sold a s a project with no body or electrics. When I received it, it was actually in much better condition than I expected. Decent lube on the gears, not too much, and it has bearings already. Only real signs of wear are the bumper itself and the curved skid plate that sits under the gearbox.

Plan is to clean, rebuild, new bearings, new electrics and then a body of choice in fitting with its intended style.

First thing was first, stripped down:

Nothing really missing other than the front body posts, so even though expensive I have ordered 2 x C parts from Fusion along with a 10t pinion and a motor plate. The plan is to use an Axial 20t motor, 2s Lipo, Mtronics ESC and a spare Turnigy Servo.

After a nice easy cleaning session with the new ultrasonic cleaner from another thread we have us:

Yay, a nice clean set of parts

Next step was to build the diff (observant spotters will note I did it already up top). The diff was cleaned, rebuilt and greased.

No original manual, but a printed copy is just fine if not 100% to scale. I made a start on the gearbox with a new set of bearings. The original ones are in good condition but they can be used for another project :)

a few moments later, the arms were on and the skid plate back in place, all went together well

The lower arms were next, but i didn't take my time and made a slight mistake :) Anyone spot the problem?

Doh! Anyways, not the worst one Ive done :P

Next steps was the driveshafts, bearings etc and it all went together nicely with a touch of grease of course. A few new parts came with the car so I threw these into the mix, why not.

I changed the rubber o-rings at each end of the driveshaft cups while I was there, the only thing im not happy with is the driveshafts have a little corrosion across the shafts on both sides.

Lastly for today, I added the shock tower with the rear body posts. I dont want to do too much more at the moment as I'm still waiting on the parts coming (the motor plate). It doesnt stop me continuting really but I'll have it done too quickly if I go too fast! :) We'll see if i can resist.

This is how it is now. Note that it doesnt have the aerial holder but I have a spare from a TL01 that I can use. My reciever wire is pretty short anyways so I'm thinkinh I might build with one at all and avoid the aerial coming through the shell. We'll see.

I hope this is of interest to some of you. Ive not done a project or build thread, so hopefully its of use. Its not a big project as such, but I need to start simples.

Nice buildthread. I should rebuild mine, and give it the full threatment with new oil in clean diffs, and it probably also need a few parts changed.

Ok, I couldnt resist :)

Made a start on one side of the chassis but I'll need to find my trusty measuring tape as the MB6, MB7 and MB8's are all quite hard to sort at the next step and in reality I think it had a mix in different places. So Ive done one half along with the starts of the steering/servo mechanism:

Next up, which is definitely enough for now, I completed the two front arms which is now step 12 in the manual. A little grease on the pins of course and its all feeling like a nice smooth action. I do like the fact the arms are two piece and even if the pin came out (likely I think) it should still hold on for a bit.

Until I can source my trusty tape measure, that'll do for now.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a good read mate :)

Kept going a bit and its missing some parts. I didnt notice taking it apart but I really dont think i've dropped anything, I hope!

Its missing 2 x MB9 tapping screws for the front arms so I've had to make do with normal screws for the moment but it seems strong enough. Its also missing one of the large screws at the front bulkhead, the MB7, si its now inherited some one from my old DEX210 kit. Not ideal, but does the job for now.

And a wee pic of the screw I had to temporarily have taken by a team durango part, sacrilege!

I finished a few more pages, the two chassis halves are joined and it feels pretty solid. Doesn't feel like many parts left, so probably wont take too long to get the basics done.

Im a little annoyed that a few screws are not "original" but it was never going to be anyways, its just me.

Front arms done:

And a few of the battery holders and other side parts of the chassis in place:

I need to choose a shell soon as its going faster than I predicted.

My two main choices, and I am open to suggestions are:

the Parma Blackfoot

But I do have a soft spot for this:

Nice build thread Axeboy, this build is really motoring along. I didn't know Parma did a Blackfoot shell.

I use Autosol to polish up any rough spots on drive axles and rusty hinge pins, shines them up a treat. It's available in Halfords

I'll have a look for some. They are the only parts that didnt clean up properly and the action isnt as smooth as it could be.

Appreciate the tip, ill try to get some

looks good so far, parts for them can be hard to find especially body parts. and if you do find them they are not cheep.

i done one a few years ago bought it off eBay it is safe to say the previous owner had some problems.

i managed to clean it up but couldnt find a new windscreen so i improvised. it sold for twice what i paid for it thats the main thing.

Yeah, im finding more parts are missing than I thought. Mainly the MB7 long screws so I've had to improvise a little.

Servo in place:

Next up was the esc and receiver which Ive just used sticky velcro as usual. Seems ok, might need good doubled sided later. Then the front shock tower and finally the rear shock tower/gearbox was attached.

Next up were the front shocks. I bought a cheap set of Traxxas Maxx shocks which look the part but the springs are too hard... I should have some spare soft tamiya springs somewhere but I'll wait till the wheels are on before I decide.

2vdr9d4.jpg

And finally for now the rear shocks were added. I had to use a mix of Durango nuts/screws in the end which isnt ideal but does the job. Im missing one MB7 on the front bulkhead, I just put two small self tappers in for the moment to stop any dust/dirt getting in. I'll need to look into a good place to get a general screw set.

Wheels went on, as did the bumper. Im missing a few of the servo parts unfortunately and dont have bits to bodge it :(

So I've ordered B parts and also the screw bag from Time Tunnel (Fusion dont have them). Also ordered the Parma Blackfoot body, will see how it is.

The front shocks are too strong making the whole front non-working. I think I have a set of springs somewhere I can use... thats for later.

This is her as now:

That's a shame as the red springs go nicely with the wheels. Are they compressed at all even when fully extended? If yes then you could try cutting a coil off to reduce the pressure they exert.

It is a shame. I did consider chopping them, they are compressed quite a bit. Think its cool to do so?

It will soften them quite a bit. Take it easy if you do, when I've done it I marked them out first with a permanent marker. Obviously it's best to take too little and cut them again than too much. If you leave one side as standard on the car while you modify the other you'll have something to gauge the difference.

It's best to test with the car fully weighted with electrics, battery and body shell... I assume you don't have the BF shell yet but it might be worth adding a bit if weight to the chassis.

Agreed. I know the fronts need to be softer, or shorted. Rear is ok and with a battery/motor added should be fine.

I'll drop chopping a little off the springs on the front and swapping the lower end pieces for shorter ones... fingers crossed

Still waiting on parts to complete the build but a few bits arrived.

Tamiya Black PS paint, some springs to try and the Parma Blackfoot shell :)

Ok, new springs were better but not ideal. Ended up chopping the hard reds and its better now... the front end is quite sloppy though, not sure if this is normal for the blackfoot? Just seems quite loose but everything is built solid.

The shell looks decent for the monies, might buy a sticker/decal set as its going to be quite boring. Getting there! Still waiting on bits to come

I got the Parma body for my classic BF:

IMG_2466.jpg?psid=1

IMG_2467.jpg?psid=1

It takes quite some masking to get the front like that! The moulded light markings aren't right so you need to mask the correct shape to get it to look right. When I found where I put them I'm going to bond in some light buckets, that’s why I left the main lights unpainted.

I now fitted the super BF body mounting parts to my King BF so a can run this body on that with the classic body holes, with some nice shocks & a direct mounted steering servo it's the best basher I've got!
