Well as the Land-Rover is pretty much finished and the Manta rally car is running and just need a bit more on the interior I obviously need a way for the LR to tow the Manta, so I need a trailer. :D

So yesterday evening I made a start, what you see in the pics is pretty much one evening worth of effort. The outer frame is 10mm U section with 10mm angle up the centre and the rail is 4mm round bar. I haven't decided yet what size tyres to use, probably the smaller TC size, so let me know what you think.

I think I've got an idea for the axles but need to source some 8mm od x 4mm id flanged bearings. I've got one which I think comes from a Schumacher car, anybody know what car it might be to make sourcing them a bit easier?

Plan is to build a box for a battery on the A-frame and a tyre rack at the front, but it needs the A-frame first ;) .
Cheers

Its looking good so far and the plans you have for the A frame etc. would enhance it too.

Wheel bearings, why not use Tamiya Hubs and suitable suspension arms or soft O rings on vertical rod A L A F103 style, just a thought

Looks like an excellent start!

Is that soldered or welded?

I'd planned to make a trailer this year, but I was going to use balsawood as I have no place that I can solder (and no soldering tools!)
I'd rather have a Slash than a Wii

Gas welded steel. TIGed Aluminium would be better but I don't have access to TIG equipment  It's come out lighter than I expected at just under 1lb so far so shouldn't be too bad for weight when done.

and checked to see if the car still fits

Then the A-frame and coupling added

Probably the axle mounts next, but I can't do that until the bearings arrive.

Wow, I always like trailor and wondered why Tamiya never put anything like it on the market other than for the big rigs. I guess is always boils down to sales and cost and adaptor piece will be needed for the cars or truck that will be pull it. I wish I have your scratch building skills. I will either cut my fingers off or set the house on fire, I guess I will just have to stick with building form kits. :D

Looking very good,
Tho I would go for larger wheels on the trailer perhaps not XC but something inbetween otherwise i think it will grind out to easly once of the tarmac service road.

In between coats of paint on this I got bored and have started on a Sankey style trailer for more off road use.

:) That is funny! Sound like me working with my PG Mini tool. Had a couple of cutting discs go fly in many pieces when cutting plastic or aluminium! Still trying my hand at gas welding aluminium, but much more skill and better equipment needed to be succesful with it.

That is a great looking trailer btw. Did you maybe consider leaf springs on the setup? Would have made it a bit smoother on rough terrain. Just my opinion.

Cheers

That body looks like an old Chevy Vega. Can I ask who makes it, and what the model is?

The rally car is an Opel Manta 'B' 400 made by GM Europe in the early to late 80's. Bodyshell there is made by Carson of Germany.
Had IMO the best rally livery ever when it carried the Andrews Heat for Hire colours.

On another note, that trailer is absolutely gorgeous, I would love something like that for the Mk.2 Escort I'm building. I might just have to have a bash at soldering something now but I know it'll be nothing like that...
