Hi
I am going to paint several Optima series bodies and I would like to imitate the box art as close as possible. I know some of the colors on some Optima series shells are decals. I read that some people use Tamiya paints to replicate the box art. Does anyone know what other brand of paint to use? Does Parma, Parma Faskolor, Pactra or other paints have similar colors that can closely resemble the box art? I'm sure I can use these brands for basic black and white but if there is a certain shade of white let me know. What are the paint codes used?
I am looking for box art paint colors for:
Original Optima: blue, yellow, black, white, other colors I missed
Turbo Optima: shade of red, white, black etc
Optima Pro: shade of yellow (camel yellow?), black, burgundy, orange for pinstripe? other colors missed
Optima Mid, Optima Mid Custom: black for windows, shade of white? I know it's white but what shade works best
Other Optimas:
Salute: blue or red used
Turbo Optima Mid: yellow
Turbo Optima SE colors: yellow orange?
Optima Mid Custom Special: silver, yellow
Tire paint:
For the famous "Sand Super" tires, what is the best kind of white paint to use to highlight the tire lettering?
Thanks again everyone.

For 'box art' colours basically there aren't any. Kyosho had their own limited range of paints so they are Kyosho Polyca paints, but they haven't been around for ages. People will use whatever paint they are comfortable using, personally I use Pactra and Fastrax Fast Finish paint.
Monty http://www.tamiyaclu...ber.asp?id=1212 would be the best person to ask about colours used, he has painted many Kyosho replicas for other members. Search the showrooms and ask the owner what colours were used on any of the many replicas there are.

Hi, this reminded me of this link that I found where the guy painted the box art like an expert ;-
http://theoptimahous...collection.html
...about the only thing that Jurgen has wrong here is the font for the number 5 on the car, otherwise pretty much perfect. Might be an idea to contact him (through the Optima House website I assume, unless Jurgen is on here?) and ask him about how he did it all.
Also there is the owner of The Optima House on here as well, TC member = optimaforever .
It would be useful if someone here could post a link to or a list of all of the 12 Kyosho Polyca paints. The e.g. 1986 Kyosho catalogue shows the paints but does not seem to list them.
Would you believe it though I actually found the Kyosho Polyca Blue paint listed as "available" (apparently) at Kyosho USA ;-
https://www.shopatro...er=2230BL/410.0
...because I have no list of Polyca paints, I don't know whether this is the correct colour for Optima. The Optima's English manual doesn't give any information regarding which exact paint to use, as far as I can see, and just says to use Polyca paints, and that there are 12 colours available...

OK here is a list of 10 out of 12 of the Polyca paints that I managed to get, cobbled together from various web pages. If anyone wants to correct or add to the list, feel free LOL ;-
Kyosho Polyca Paint Black 20cc
KYO2230BL - POLYCA COLOR BLUE
KYO2230KO - POLYCA COLOR FL.ORANGE
KYO2230KP - POLYCA COLOR FL.PINK
KYO2230O - POLYCA COLOR ORANGE
Kyosho Polyca Paint Race Yellow 20cc
KYO2230R - POLYCA COLOR RED
Kyosho Polyca Paint Violet 20cc
KYO2230W - POLYCA COLOR WHITE
KYO2230Y - POLYCA COLOR YELLOW
EDIT: Update Dec 2009 found 2 more in the Turbo Optima Mid English manual, which makes all 12 colors now, the missing 2 are ;-
Polyca color Yellow Green
Polyca color Sky Blue
(sounds like it might be the correct Optima color
)
Cheers,
Alistair G.

Not much point in compiling a list of all the Polyca paints, they didn't cover every colour used and they have been out of production for many years so I wouldn't like to try using any you have found. A colour chart would also be more useful than part numbers.
It's usually just a case of going through the colour charts of your favourite paint to find a match, or to mix your own.
As I suggested above Monty would be the best source to start on colours as he's done a few replicas for people. Here's a couple of examples of his handiwork.

Thanks for the detailed Kyosho paint color information Live Steam Mad. That took some work so I appreciate the information
Terry.SC thanks for the links. Monty's colors chosen for those shells are exactly the colors I am after. I will have to contact him directly. Does he go by "Monty" on Tamiya Club?
Thanks again guys, I look forward to getting my shells painted. They are all Marwan reproductions. I will go to Kamtec for the Optima Pro shell.
Hopefully once I get the colors right, I will post some photos.

Monty thanks for replying to this thread. I checked out the colors you recommended and they look dead-on. Great detailed body work by the way and very inspirational =).
On the Optima Pro body, I noticed the black color outlined with gold, black, and yellow pin stripes on the sides, the hood, and the top were not decals. Doh!

Curses I just checked and Kyosho USA will not ship any of their goods to England and I wanted to get the "correct" (?) PolyCa Blue paint for my original Optima.
My USA friend in CA is still in Namibia
so he won't be able to help me.
Cheers,
Alistair G.

Hey Supergreg,
Your runner looks real nice, it should be a shelf queen. Is that the Kamtec shell? It doesn't look that short as mentioned in your description.
I like that you also have Sand Super slicks. I gotta find me a used set some day so I can have an authentic set of street tires. What kind of paint did you use for the tire lettering. The white "Sand Super" tire lettering is what makes a regular vintage Optima stand out from the crowd.
Thanks!

Live Steam Mad - I checked the paint number, KYO2230BL, and cannot find a photo of the color anywhere online. Have you seen the color yourself? I think Monty's colors with the Tamiya paint PS-3 comes suprisingly close to the actual boxart. I'll keep searching but none of the local stores here have that Kyosho blue plaint but they do carry Tamiya.
On another note similarly related:
I'm still stripping the paint off an old Optima shell. The paint is 20+ years old and it's a real pain to remove. I know people use brake fluid, nitro fuel or a type of body wash to remove old paint. What other chemical works best at removing 20 year old paint? The body is used but I'd still like to strip it and paint it boxart style for a runner.
Thanks again.

I think LSM is just assuming the blue will be the same colour as used on the Optima, considering they only list one blue colour. Then again the Polyca colour could be the blue used on the Turbo Scorpion, Salute, Turbo Rocky or Triumph, all of which are different to the Optima blue.
Nitro fuel is the only fluid I would recommend for stripping paint from lexan. Brake fluid and every other paint remover I have found will damage the plastic.

Hi rcjunkie, I have never seen that exact Kyosho colour myself in the flesh, but I at least assumed that it was the exact one that Kyosho's modellers used to create the original box art finish, of course that assumption could be wrong, they may have already had a blue of their own at the time but decided to use someone else's shade of blue to make a more pleasing blue to their eyes for when they originally did the box art photo for the box.
I'd love to hear from anyone who actually ever used PolyCa 2230 Blue, and see how close it is to Optima box art blue.
For stripping my own original Optima shell, I used O'Donnell model RC car racing fuel with 16 per cent Nitromethane content. Worked very well. No cloudyness on the shell now, and original paint (which was badly done, buggy bought second hand) all gone.
Cheers,
Alistair G.
