I've just about talked myself out of doing this conversion but I was just wondering if anyone else had done it.

This wouldn't be a total change over, I was thinking of a cosmetic conversion. Once you change the wheels/tires and lower the body it must at least start to look more like the Hilux. Throw on a Hilux front bumper and some hub things and it should look pretty good, right?
I guess I just prefer the scale looking Hilux over the comically large tires of the Mountaineer.

Well, I bought a used Hilux, that was sort of converted into a Bruiser. It was a homemade conversion, so lots of lift parts. So I reversed what you thought of attempting.
I think you could take the cap of the back bed of the bruiser, like you said, change the bumpers, and then get hilux axle set-ups with wheels. It would be pretty close to the hilux that way. But, I am not sure if the axles are compatible or not. It would look kind of like the modern Hilift Hilux I think when done.
I'd like to see one personally. As some guys have taken a hilux body and put it on a bruiser chassis, but kept the Bruiser wheels. I always thought that a Bruiser with a Hilux body looked cool.
Sorry Roots, i wish I knew more about these to give helpful advice.

its cheaper to get a hilux.
the axles are different the hubs are different the motor sits different the front body mount is different the chassis is different the radio box and rear body mount is different.
the bumper mounts and cross members are different, the steering linkage is different.
what will happen is you will cut up expensive parts from one truck to make it look like an homemade other truck and decrease the value of everything overall.
you can get a original hilux for 500ish and a mounty for about the same.
or you get yourself a new Hilux hi-lift kit and mod the heck out of it a lot cheaper and come up with something really realistic using rc4wd parts.
the difference is the availability of parts verse your goal.
the new hi lift kit would be a great start.
