Kyosho Escort Help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently picked up this Kyosho Escort in a second hand shop and am keen to get it going. I has a broken steering arm and I am hunting for the part.

I don't know much about the model itself or how hold it is, but is in pretty good condition except for the broken part.

Would appreciate any help!

:)

Hi, and welcome to Tamiya Club.

That looks like a Kyosho SuperTen to me. I have a load of Kyosho spares in my garage and I'm pretty sure I have one of those arms. I'll check for you when I get home tonight and let you know.

Thanks,

Steve

It's the later SuperTen 4WD electric chassis that is based on the Lazer Alpha/Lazer 2000 buggy chassis (the earlier ones were based on the Optima Mid chassis). The Lazer Alpha was a cost-reduced version of the Lazer ZX-series chassis (like the ZX-Sport, ZX-R etc.) that was made from cheaper plastics which made it more fragile (which shows in the suspension arms, for instance). The part number for the Lazer Alpha suspension arm sprue ('D' Parts) is LZ-6, though the glass-filled plastic arms from the Lazer ZX series (part number LA-26) will probably fit and would be stronger replacements (but more expensive).

It is 4WD and has a belt system running down the middle. It takes a standard 7.2v battery, which goes in sideways and has Kyosho on the back of the chassis.

@SteveAdair That would be greatly appreciated if you could have a look.

@fastfordrc OK so what year are we talking?

I think the Lazer Alpha buggy was introduced around 1992 or 1993, and the SuperTen Escort Cosworth version came out about 1994-ish. There was also a later Repsol Escort WRC version (the shell did not look as nice though) which I think came out about 1998. By about 2002 Kyosho had abandoned their 235mm SuperTen scale cars based on buggy chassis (and the onroad nitro FW-series chassis that evolved out of the original RS200 GP10) and had moved on to 'PureTen' 190-200mm scale touring and rally cars.

If you are looking for a manual, there is a PDF of the Lazer Alpha buggy available here:

http://www.retromodelisme.com/pdf/manuel/k...alpha_lazer.pdf

Also, have a look on this thread on RC10Talk. Someone is upgrading a SuperTen Celica with the Lazer Alpha chassis with as many parts and hopups from the Lazer ZX series that will fit (including the reinforced LA-26 suspension arms):

I am new to this model and make so a while I am waiting for parts, is there any maintenance I should do to my Escort?

Also - Randomly saw a car today with number plate 'Kyosho'. 3 Weeks ago I would have had no idea what that meant.

Regrease bearings, clean up the parts, basic matenince. Could strip the car completely, rebuild it, as they say- a cars jot yours till you built it!

Hi! I really appreciate all your help so far and just to let you know I got it going today.

Here is where I am up too:

I received the part and replaced the broken steering arm. Then I put in the crystals from my old hornet and charged up the 1400mAh battery.

Took it for a test run today and seems to work fine. I am yet to give it a proper service, but I did notice that it isn't the fastest RC I have ever driven. Obviously the Hornet is pretty quick out of the box, and it is I have for a comparison, but I was expecting a little more speed. Saying that it was a lot of fun to drive. I did notice the Escort body scraping on bumps and assumed it was more of an on-road body. So I took the body and off and it handled some off road much better.

Would a simple engine upgrade do the job for a bit more speed?

Yes, Upgrade the electronics to a newer 540 lower turn motor- Ansmann Clash is cheap- or you could go brushless which will give you lots more POWER!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the Cossie body is more 'On-Road', there might be buggy bodies that fit the chassis being from a Lazer base.

P.s.- If you ever want to sell the wheels and/or body, you know where I am :)!!

Go Brushless , its the future and you'll not regret it . Ok its a bit of a one off outlay to get sorted with a lipo , a charger motor and ESC ect but if you want some speed its the way to go .

Thanks guys,

Any ideas what the stock motor would be? It just say '50 Power' and 'Racing Engine'. I am guessing it must be a 380-sized motor or something.

Will look into brush-less. :-)

The stock motor will be a 540 brushed motor.

I replaced the motor with a stock Tamiya 540 and it seems to have a bit more grunt now. Also took it for a drive with a new Venom 3000mAh battery and it had a really good run.

But compared to my mate's Desert Gator it was still really slow.

So what I need to determine is this model just a slow RC or is there something wrong?

Also managed to break the other steering arm today. Lucky I got the parts. The original plasitc is just too brittle.

Well the your Escort, is a SuperTen, so is alot heavier than the buggy! Its rather wide as well so that doesnt help the speed! If you want a faster car your better off going for a buggy, or something designed for on-road use.
