In the middle of March, my wife and I will be in England and Scotland for 8 days for vacation. We're flying into London and driving to Edinburgh, then back again. We have all the tourist-y stuff figured out, but I know she'll want to do some shopping, and that means I want to, too.

Ideally, I'd like to bring back a Mardave kit (since it's actually made there), but I'd also like to look around for some of the goodies that aren't easily available here in the US (Carson bodies and wheels, or Kamtec bodies). Just something besides a T-shirt or a paperweight or some other lame cheesy souvenir. When I was in Germany in 2000, I brought back 3 Carson bodies stuffled full of dirty clothes to protect them. (The customs guys were really confused. )

So, gentlemen, my question to you is: where are the good hobby shops? We'll have two days in London without a car (staying near Earl's Court) that will be for sightseeing/shopping, and then I'm sure I'll have some time to kill in Newcastle and in Edinburgh while she goes off and does things with her sister. Barring hobby shops, where do I find these "boot sales" you guys are always talking about? Maybe I'll get lucky...

Suggestions?

If you dont mind a overnight stay on the way north to Scotland i would suggest taking the time to visit Modelsport in Otley , Yorkshire . Not only is it great model store but Yorkshire is well worth a visit anyway . Otley is quite near Leeds(12 MILES ) and the shopping in Leeds city centre is second to none . There are loads of top class hotels both in Otley itself and in central Leeds . If you need any more help or advice just ask via a PM . I'am a yorkshireman originally so this is my part of the world and i know it well . Modelsports website is linked from the main page BTW .

A lot depends what excatly you are looking for - if you intend buying a NIB kit then the UK is no cheaper than buying locally, or importing from HK.

If you want to collect a load of choice spares, then don't assume anywhere will have stock - order in advance, as often shops need 2-3 days to get stock from the UK distributor, or worse still 1-2 weeks for it to come from Japan.

In Edinburgh, Wonderland Models www.wonderlandmodels.com

Normally spot on with pricing too for kits, no idea what stock of spares they physically carry..

Modelzone are about the only national model hobby shop these days - www.modelzone.co.uk

They tend to be located in major cities, so may be worth looking at their website for possible locations in Edinburgh, Leeds, London etc Modelzone carry almost no spare parts, concentrating on NIB kits and paint only.

http://www.modelzone.co.uk/stores/

looks like London (x2) and Newcastle are your best bets - they sometimes have the odd Tamiya kit on sale, CC-01 kits were £100 just after Xmas but now sold out and discontinued (Landcruiser)
History for last 30 months.. bought too many, not sold enough - current stable 46 EEK

Yeah there is also a Modelzone at Meadowhall shopping center in Sheffield (about 20-30 miles from Leeds). Meadowhall is worth a visit if you are passing its huge with loads of shops and eateries (and Modelzone)

Modelsport is defiantly worth a visit, even for grabbing little odds and ends, plus they stock loads of bodies and Mtroniks gear.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're actually spending the night with friends in Newcastle on the way up. Modelsport looks interesting; I'll bring up Otley as a lunch stop idea. And I'll look for Wonderland Models in Edinburgh.

It sounds like a lot of your little hobby shops have either evaporated or been gobbled up by giant corporate monsters, like ours have... that's too bad.

What I'm really after is one of those little Mardave 1/12 scale kits, but I don't see them listed for sale in any shops. Does anyone stock them, or should I just mail-order one and tell people I got it when I was in England? :D

Second that^^
Otley as said is a nice town
In fact that whole area is nice and plenty of places to see round there
You could always try e-mailing Modelsport asking them if they could order a Mardave kit in for you
Failing that get in touch with Kamtec and see if he would be willing to post to your friends in Newcastle
Kamtec are also a Mardave distributor
Also driving from London to Edinburgh, near enough 400 miles so be prepared for the horror of UK petrol prices!! :)
I was fatboyslim way before that cr*p dj from Hull!!

I used to live in Newcastle, moved away just under three years ago.

By the time I left there were no "really" good RC car shops. The few that were good had either significantly reduced their stock or closed down - it's a tough market. Modelzone in Newcastle is a chain store as mentioned, only has a handful of kits, no spares or upgrades. Normally good stocks of PS spray paint though!

In "The Toon" itself there is a shop called the County House which used to do RC but cut back its stock dramatically to focus on the airguns. There might still be a bit of stock left. There is a shop in North Shields (10 miles towards the coast) called Phills Models who has been established a long time, kept some car stuff and has quite a lot of old stuff hanging around too. North Shields itself is not very nice but the Fish Quay is famous for Fish and Chips (although I don't think they are as good as most of the in-town chip shops). Tynemouth is nearby and is very nice with great walks along the coast. There is a shop in Whitburn called Whitburn Hobbies (which is actually on the other side of the Tyne between South Shields and Sunderland) that kept some car stuff as well. Whitburn is pleasant but very quiet. The other shops in the area kept very little car stuff but you never know what you might find!

The best car shop for browsing nearby-ish is in Middlesbrough - Cleveland Models. The owner carries a lot of Tamiya cars and parts, probably one of the best stocked for Tamiya in the UK! The shop is barely bigger than a broom cupboard. Middlesbrough itself is as pleasant as the smog which hangs permanently over it!

Although I've been to Edinburgh (a very nice day out) I've never been to the model shops there. Wonderland Models list a lot on their site but they don't keep all of it in stock - they are one of the breed of internet traders who list what their suppliers sell, rather than list what they have in stock.

Mardave stuff is not widely stocked, just a few mail order suppliers and the shops associated with clubs that run them.

Hope that helps - enjoy your trip!

Just something besides a T-shirt or a paperweight or some other lame cheesy souvenir. When I was in Germany in 2000, I brought back 3 Carson bodies stuffled full of dirty clothes to protect them. (The customs guys were really confused. :D )

Suggestions?

Well, just returned from our UK adventure last night. Loved it! It's a beautiful country, and the people were wonderful. I managed to successfully pilot our rental car (a Vauxhall Corsa) over 800 miles without indicent (well, I did hit a curb with the left front wheel on the first day, and I had trouble finding third gear the whole trip), and we had a great time. Favorite towns: London and Stratford. Could have spend another week in London easily.

No RC souvenirs, as it turns out, but I did pick up 2 static model kits at a shop in Berwick-upon-Tweed: a 1/16 scale Mini Cooper with a die-cast metal body, and a tiny little 1/32 Airfix Triumph TR4A.

Still thinking of ordering a Mardave V12 kit, maybe with a Corsa body (if one exists) to commemorate our faithful little black rent-a-car.

Yeah, it takes a bit to learn to drive on the left, but I've done it a few times, and after a day or 2, it's not that bad.
Just those skinny roads with 8 foot hedges on both sides!

I love the UK and Ireland, nice you had a good time! Makes me want to go back!
Cheers,
Skottoman

Is that Shakespeare's Stratford in the heart of England? Did you find this place modelRCshop almost in the centre of town. You can practically see it from the Shakespeare theatre, behind British Home Stores ( BHS ).

The Corsa wasn't a bad little car at all. In fact, I wish we could get cars like that here. I'd take it over a Dodge Neon or a Chevy Aveo any day.

Yes, we got to Edinburgh, but only the Portobello area along the seacoast. Beautiful promenade along the beach, but very cold to walk along after dark.

Yep, I stopped in there. They have a pretty decent selection of stuff, but nothing I couldn't get in the States for less money. Nice little "play area" set up in the back for RC cars, too. (I pulled out a Subaru Brat kit to look at it and my wife went "Oooh, cool!" so I might be able to obtain "permission" to order one of those...)
