The Boomerang was my second Tamiya back in 1986, so when this arrived today I was very pleased. Is there anything better than receiving a vintage Tamiya in the post; I dont think so

DSCF1662.JPG

I've got some longer term plans for this, which at the moment involve adding 2.4ghz, DF-03 wheels, some yeah racing shocks and creating a moon-eyes themed livery, hence the 'BQQMERANG' tittle, all of which I would like to capture in this thread as things develop. Although for now I'm planning on taking this as it is to the Tamiya meet in Grantham on the 31st of next month, and while it's mostly all there, it could do with a bit of TLC first.

One thing that is missing is a set of crystals, and I am unsure which type I need. I know they need to be 27mhz, but please can anyone tell me if they have to be a certain 'model', in other words would crystals from a techniplus AP202 fit, or do they need to be from a AP-227 mk3, can they be from a AP-227 mk2 etc etc???

I've seen some crystal sets advertised here on TC, I just dont know if they'd be compatable.

Of course I realise that one option would be to forget about the crystals and go straight for the 2.4ghz, but at the moment i need to keep costs down and I see the crystals as a cheaper option right now.

I would appreciate it if someone can steer me in the right direction please.

thanks.

any 27mhz crystals will , but if your planing on running at a meeting , a couple of spare sets wouldnt hurt to avoid feq clashes .. i have 2 boomers , one a bog original , the other '' modernized .. 2.2'' wheels , decent alloy shocks and springs .. it runs very nice and actual floats around on the suspension and doesnt '' clunk '' over jumps ..

Very nice Boomer commiedoor, that's something like the look I would like to go for eventually, although the original inspiration came from Shy69's Hotshot and this...

Thanks for the heads-up on the crystals too!!

it looks like the evil twin of yours ! Certainly does; reminds me of the episode of Knight Rider with KIT vs. KAR; or something like that

Well the strip down began this evening and so far I need to buy a new centre prop shaft (the current one is bent), and a new set of snap connectors for the motor and speed controller wouldnt go amiss, since the current ones are corroded.

3 pairs of 27mhz crystals arrived today coutresey of Gecko-no-more, thanks mate, and all the radio gear works fine.

All in all not to bad so far. Mind you I've only removed the speed control and I am suprised how much play there is in the assemblies of the front and rear arms; it all feels very sloppy :)

pics to follow...

This is really quite clean, compared to some of the bashers you see on here prior to restoration...

I don't know actually. It came with a typed (on a typewriter  ) instruction leaflet on how to fit it to the car; well it is quite a complicated process. The reference at the top states 'MM48 BOOMERANG / BIGWIG FITTING INSTRUCTIONS'.

DSCF1720.JPG DSCF1719.JPG

I'd be interested to know if it is CRP or another make???

I contacted Crash, and he thinks that it might have been made by a company called JG Manufacturing....

I cannot promise I know all, but that type of plastic (Kydex) was also used by a company simply named "JG mfg" also known as John Gudvangen Manufacturing. They don't seem to be around anymore, they were from Whittier, CA 90609 and their old telephone number was (213) 947-1206.
The instructions you have also fit their type as well, simple with a simple illustration, but that also is how CRP did things back then. I don't know if you will find a hit off that part number on the instruction sheet, but you could try.

i have tried searching for the part no. online but to no avail.

Please can anyone recommend an adhesive that can be used to glue / repair the plastic used for Tamiya gearboxes?

I have stripped the rear gearbox down and noticed that on both sides of the case the apertures, used to locate the braket that supports the rear suspension assembly, have split; see photo.

DSCF4607.JPG

I have tried superglue to repair them but it doesn't take.

Is this a common design fault / weak-spot on the boomerang gearbox?

Thanks for your replies chaps

In the UK we have an adhesive product called Araladite, that looks to be the same or similar to JB Weld. Then again considering the repair probably wont last it is probably best in the long run to get a new gear box case.

aren't the re-re's modified to take new E-clipped outdrives?

Superglue works best on the black plastic if you want a glue, or try a welding solvent like MEK.
Araldite/epoxy doesn't grab the material too well

those little lugs don't do much, blue bit doesn't fallout even if lugs are gone....?

Thanks WillyChang, I'm not sure about the E-cliped drives so I'll hold off on getting the new gear case for now.
I tried super glue but it didnt work, so i'll look for something else and avoid Araldite.

I think you make a good point about the screw pins too, becasue the rear pins will holds the suspension mount in place anyway...
