Cheers Berman :)

Further to my trim detail question, has anyone used some type of marker/pen to "draw" the detail lines etc? If so, what type?
Cheers

I use a "Sharpie" silver ink pen for all my silver details.

I also use a fine felt tip black ink pen for the door/panel lines. (There's a photo of it in my Scania build thread) It does take a few days to cure so it doesn't smudge though...

Cheers,

Is the silver ink a paint type pen, or gel ink type, been looking around to try and find the ideal type. Will check out the black one on your thread.

Cheers mate, brilliant info as always

Wow, this thing is looking awesome and HUGE! I love the paint scheme with the 2 tone. The blue and silver really fit the Ford.

The silver pen I used for the window trims on my Knight Hauler. There are photos of the silver in that thread.
It's a Sharpie. It's somewhere between a paint pen, and a gel ink. It works REALLY well. The black fine line ink I have doesn't work that well, because it takes a few passes to get it black, and a while to dry. But the end results are worth it. I wish Sharpie made a fine line black marker...

Keep up the build and photos... This is turning out very nice.
Cheers,
Skottoman

Been a while since I've been able to do much here (much to my own disgust). I got it back out and onto the workbench the other day and today I finally ordered a MFU, and telescopic antenna so may be able to get on and get it finished. At least the paint is very hard, gonna wet sand it (is 2000 grit fine enough?), do some detail lines on the bodywork, then clearcoat it. Actually, should I do detail lines before or after clearcoat, will the clearcoat affect the "pen" lines?

Anyway, stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.

I guess you could do a quick light wet sanding of the color with your 2000, then do all your clearcoating and let it sit for quite some time... I got a small wetsanding paper set. Grits go from 3000-3200-4000-6000-8000-12000. You have to go through all of them to get a really smooth finish. You also have to be careful not to sand through. The first grits (3000-3200) you are trying to eliminate the orange peel, after that, lightly sand through the rest of the grits to eliminate scratches and get a smooth surface. Water on them all the time. After all that wetsanding, hit it with some polishing compound and buff it to death. Then some car wax, and you'll be happy as a clam.

As far as the pen lines, I'd do that last, after the clear. The clear would probably melt the pen ink.

Keep it up!
Cheers,
Skottoman

It's going to be a little confusing because now you have to remove the 5th wheel you installed, and build up a new version with a sensor in it for the trailer "attach/detach" sound. Thus the extra 5th wheel parts.

Tamiya made it kind of difficult to figure out which to add/use. Especially when you throw the motorized trailer legs into the mix.

Enjoy! We'll be watching...

Well Sunday didn't quite go as planned, ended up being called into work in the morning, but sat down in the arvo and basically tried to get my head around the MFC-01, so basically wired it all up and tested it, must say it is very cool. Then started running the rear light wires. Struggled to find a good way of hiding the wires, at this stage have just used some blu-tac to keep the wires in the chassis rails.
Anyway, heres some pics
What a mess ;)

The MFU comes with some stick on clips with a bendable part to hold the wires. I used those in the chassis rails.
I also slipped black shrinkwrap over the exposed parts and bundled it together near the tail lights.

Yes, organizing this mess is tough. My suggestion is get yourself a HUGE amount of zipties, and don't be afraid to use them. Heh. :)

Fun though eh?!

Cheers,
Skottoman

I did see those clips in a bag, might be time I started using my brain ;) Great idea with the shrink wrap too, cheers. Really need to finish the body so I can get on with the full installation

Well, my worst nightmare has come true :( the bodywork has been ruined by the clearcoat. I obviously was too heavy handed on the second coat of clear, either that or I applied it too soon after the first light coat. Anyway, the colour underneath has melted and run so that has stuffed that, and $90 worth of paint :( . Really pee'd off right now!

Thats really bad news, that was a very nice paint job. Was it all Tamiya paints?, and Tamiya clear coat that you used?, or did you use different brands?.

All Tamiya paints, I should say that it's only the roof spoiler and front bumper that are affected and will need stripping and re-doing, was really angry when I first posted, I haven't cleared the main body yet and now feel very apprehensive (even moreso than before) about doing it.

Ok, repairs are well underway, roof spoiler has been stripped, sanded and primed awaiting paint, and other parts are cleared ready to go. Got the first 2 light coats on the main body, and now that I kinda know what I'm doing, I'm quite happy with the result that clear gives, colours have become "deeper" and of course glossier.

Then I got onto some wiring tidying up and fitted the vibration unit, RX and actual MFC unit. Progress photos to follow soon

P.s. feeling better than about 10 or so hours ago ;)

Glad to hear you are almost back on track - strange expereince with the paint though, I'm almost always heavy handed with a paint can in my hand and I rarely wait more than a day between base colour and gloss and have never had such an issue - perhaps you were just unlucky with a combo of colour and clear ?

Yeah, as both base colours are metallic type (Metallic Blue & Silver Mica) maybe they let the clear get through some how.
