Hi there,

like to introduce you to my new project. Bought the PZ IVJ 9 months ago and recently started on it.

I will make a model of one of the 6/. reg of the 1. SS LSAH during the Ardennes offensiv in december 1944.

Here you get the idea how it will look

Posted Image

First I worked on the turret doors to make them functional

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

added "armor to the doors

Posted Image

made the hinges to close the doors

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

next I worked on the Nahverteidigungswaffe (close combat weapon (CCW)) and the filter. The first is to high and oriented the wrong way, the second is to high (due to its function for the infr red led). Bad points here for Mr Tamiya
the Late version had the filter also closer to the close combat weapon, so I had to cut it out and move it

Original place and height

Posted Image

Cut out the CCW

Posted Image

placed it in the correct angle en at at the correct height, removed the filter

Posted Image

after a lot of sanding this is the correct situation for the Late version

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

still need to sand it down a little

Next work the cupola of the commander, it requires a revolving hatch instead of the clamshell version

I can see a lot of time and effort going into the small details here. Some very nice work. I am watching with interest. Please keep the updates coming.

a little bit further

a before shot

Posted Image

preparing the hinges

Posted Image

after a lot of cutting and cursing we have one hatch that obvious was fubar

Posted Image

solution is to make a new hatch out of scrap and recuperation of some parts of the original

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

the result

Posted Image

putting up the new rims, with holes for drainage purpose

Posted Image

Posted Image

and there we have a functional hatch

Posted Image

the other hatch will remain closed because at that place will the motor and construction for the turret rotation be located. By opening up the hatch I will weaken the structere and I don't want to take any risks here

Posted Image

Posted Image

I will nevertheless replace the rims of the other hatch.

So that was it for now, till next time!

I can now see why a $50.00 kit could be going for 10x - 20x or more of its purchase price after being assembled. I have a hard time just taking parts
off the tree with out breaking them or the glue spilling everywhere but the spot where I want it and painting works are another nightmare  ...well thats not quite true. Amazing modification works for correctness, this is taking modelling to another level.

made the lock for the hatch. I used a manual from Aber as a reference (found no pics of the real lock)

Posted Image

so made these parts

Posted Image

Posted Image

the result is a working lock

Isn't it so rewarding to "make it" yourself? I mean, I buy it if I can but if I only need one piece out of a whole sprue of PE it usually gets made.

I've been following this quite closely and it's impressing me! Keep up the good work!

If I can buy it, I will, but for this model there is so little after market that I must make it myself. But yes, it is so rewarding to make it youself :)

So impressed both with the quality of your work and the attention to detail . I'am working on a 1/6th scale Ford GPA seep myself but theres no way that my skill even comes close to yours . The club looks fantastic too .

thank you njmlondon.

I intended to wait until the work was done, but it has been a while, so here is what I have done

I started to make the covers for the engine airfilter workable

First I tried to sand it, but that was to difficult

Posted Image

so I removed all the covers

Posted Image

made a copy of the diamond plate with aluminium foil and glued it in place with PE

Posted Image

There still a few gaps, but I will solve this during painting and weathering

Posted Image

and when the plates are down, you hardly notice (on top the original)

Posted Image

reproduced the plates and the hinges

Posted Image

and putted them in place. 2 down, 6 to go!!!

Posted Image

Posted Image

will be continued...
