Oh yeah, I believe the usual advice is to take some pain killers, wash them down with a slug of whiskey, then bite down on a leather strap and get to work ;)
Warming the tyres up a little with a hair dryer or warm water may help but I find the best way is to just get on with it. You're putting the wheel in at right angles and then rotating it as instructed I assume? There's isn't alot of alternatives that I've heard of.

Pain is mostly mind over matter; if you don't mind it doesn't matter. ;)

pull out the inner bead of the tyre , squeeze the tyre to make a set of '' lips '' , put the inner in the lips , making sure the lips stay out side the inner ring . once you get one side in ,pull the nbead out on the outher side and make sure you keep the bead of the tyre out side the ring . you will be able to turn the ring which ever way you want . once your happy with the position , push the beads back in .. .strong fingers help too
