the super champ was my first ever car t hat my dad bought for me when it was new. After years of racing I lost interest and it was stored in the shed.

A few years ago I got back into RC and found it in the shed and sold it to fund my racing, not knowing what it was worth at the time.

As the last couple of years have passed I kick myself everyday for selling it.

I finally picked up one this week in pretty good condition.

I am ready for a full restoration and make it a shelf queen. I am excited reading all that are on the forums and I am sure I might ask a few questions about where to find a few parts.

I hope I can take pics as I work my way through the restoration and share with all.

Enjoy the restoration. Ebay is your best bet or here on TC.

Some of the SC parts were unique to this kit and can be hard to find so make sure you make the most of what you have. Have fun :)

Well it arrived in the mail yesterday and it is in not bad condition, not great either. It is missing a few parts but i am sure scouring the net i will find some or asking on here.

Immediately i see that it needs a rear bumper which might be the most difficult as i havent seen to many of them about

The other pieces are pieces that i will be able to find of the re-release buggy champ eg: motor cover, shock rubbers, ball cups and a few other little items.

A new set of wheels and tyres which i have seen on ebay and a new set of decals to go with a stripped back and repainted Original blue body will look good i think.

the old hump pack is good for the shelf queen.

It is missing the old manual ESC is probably the most painful, havent seen too many of them around, have seen a couple of new ones but they are $$$$$$$ on ebay.

Well here are the pics straight out of the box, more to come as i start on the restoration.

If anybody has parts that are suitable for teh Superchamp restoration please let me know and we can have a chat or they know of teh best place to get parts

cheers for any information, I am looking forward to this

Looks like a nice one to restore, you have the hardest part to find which is a nice body.
Will be watching for your rebuild.
Have fun!

Hi chrisk5, that's one SWEET Super Champ. Always liked them in black. Mine is red. I have the original MSC on my Sand Scorcher as I haven't found a complete one for my VW bug. Wanna trade?

OK i have finally had some time to completely strip the car down. Not in bad condition. started to clean some of teh alloy parts with a pot scrubber (the green edge). i could have polished them but i dont like the shiny look.

picked up some oven cleaner today ready to strip the body. i picked up some undercoat and TS15 paint ready to lay a few layers of the original blue.

ordered some decals from pandaGFX, so hopefully a near new finish. i have ordered some new wheels and tyres and even found some window netting online. i found a rear bumper to replace the cracked rear.

I am in need of the original manual speed controller ( missed a NIB on ebay) and also need the original tie rods, the metal ones, so if there is anybody out there that may have or know of where i can pick them up would be good.

a few pics of it all apart and my Buggy champ sitting on the shelf too, need to make way for the superchamp

OK, still slowly working away and surrounding myself with parts from all over the world thanks to some members on here.

whilst i have been waiting on parts, it has been repair and paint for the body.

it come up pretty good, a few coats of paint and finally applied the decals last night. i have to re apply the decals again due to a small error on one of them, but that has been sorted and a new set is is back in production.

here is a pic of the final product

OK another update. i fiannly got some time this afternoon to put some parts together.

put the rear end together along with teh front. i found i was having diffculties with teh motor lining up with the pins but after some measuring and checking out i have found one of teh pins have been burred so it wont fit nice into the motor.

i have to get the dremel out and clean that up. once i do that i can mount teh motor and gear cover.

slowly getting there but i will post some more updates soon

well after a few weeks of not much, i have a few more pics. I am just waiting on 2 more servo mounts from OS so i can mount the mechanical speedy and servo. i should be just about finished then.

body is painted and decaled, thanks to PandaGFX, i just need to finish painting the driver and lights and mount them 9the wife helps me with the little painting of teh driver, she has a steadier hand than me.

so far i am happy with the build and will post final shots when i am 100% complete

Looks very very good. I really like the rear bumper. Any ideas for the driver, like colors, etc?

I am thinking box art for the driver, yes very plain!!

Not sure might see what I will do, a bit of color is good.

I am thinking another week and I should be 100% done ready for the complete pics

Willy

Rear bumper is,a one piece alloy one. Closest I could get to original cast one.

From flebay, I can send details if you want, but it is very good quality and a nice piece of work.

Unfortunately not genuine but best I can do given the age of the car and how easy they are to break.

I remember when I had the super champ as my first car I broke the bumper and my grandfather at the time was a engineer/boiler maker and welded the cast bumper for me at work.

I wish he was around to do the same for my broken one

have you still got all the missing pieces? JB Weld might be great for gluing it all back together

ya the alloy replacement does look the part... haha maybe just a bit too smooth/shiny

i did manage to find a replacement for my broken bumper,
got gifted a used item off someone who had just done a resto.
Just nicely patina'd to suit the rest of my used/abused example.

Yer you are right about the shiny alloy, I should have thrown it around a little first before placeing it on the car.

It's going to be ashelf queen rear to the back of the shelf lol
