I'm looking for a little help and guidance (again). What pitch are FAV/Wild One pinions? I'm looking for steel replacements and obviously don't want to buy the wrong thing.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Paul posted a formula to convert pitch to mod and vice versa, you might find this useful.,

To convert "mod" to "pitch", take 25.4 and divide it by the "mod."

Example: Convert 0.8 mod to pitch. 25.4 / 0.8 = 31.75 pitch

To convert "pitch" to "mod", take 25.4 and divide it by "pitch."

Exampe: Convert 48 pitch to mod. 25.4 / 48 = 0.529 mod.

Sometimes people will use 32 pitch gears in 0.8 mod applications, or 48 pitch gears in 0.5 mod applications, because they are relatively close to each other. This is not a good practice because the force that is normally distributed across multiple meshing teeth is suddenly focused on one tooth at a time. This will cause extra noise and extra wear on the weaker material of the two gears.

The best practice is to always match gear pitch exactly, pitch to pitch, or mod to mod.

As wolfdogstinkus has posted it is 0.8mod pinion you want. 32dp is close but not close enough will cause noise drag and wear.

Quote from TA-Mark
Mod and dp gears don't mix. If you try, you end up with stripped gears in a matter of minutes, with the exception of 32dp vs 0.8mod. A 32dp steel pinion is a suitable replacement for the butter soft Tamiya 0.8m aluminium pinions in vintage models like the Hornet or Hotshot. The slight difference in size between 32dp and 0.8mod is not greater than the needed gap in the pinion/spur mesh.

I have a 32 pitch 17Tooth pinion in my DT-02, have I ruined it?, I will have to open the gearbox tomorrow and have a look?.

Edit, I think it's o.k, just found this,

The gears are fine with the power. You could bolt crazy high Kv motors into it if gearing allowed, but you only have choice of 17 tooth and 19 tooth pinions. This limits the DT02 to a maximum of around 4500Kv with the standard sized wheels.

Be sure to ditch the aluminium kit supplied pinion and use steel RW Racing (ARW3200-17) or Robinson Racing (RRP0170) 32dp pinions. Aluminium pinions wear quickly and chew up the spur gear.

If you are going to use brushless, buy a motor/esc combo pack. The ESC is usually optimised for the supplied motor. I'm one to only buy quality and would use a Castlecreations SV2 Sidewinder 3800Kv combo with what you're trying to achieve (refer to other thread with the tyres). The Castle is slightly more expensive than EZ-Run systems, but you get what you pay for. Drive the two side by side and it's like night and day in smoothness and response.

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated. I bought an Ansmann 32dp steel pinion, it seems just as quiet and smooth as the original. Job done :)
