Lucky day! Following a bit of advertising at work for any Tamiya bits and bobs people may have and wish to sell or offload, a kindly chap contacted me to say I could have his old RC car. He couldnt remember what it was but he said I was welcome to it. So he brought in a bag and this is what it was......







The body is iffy, tho if I can get the paint off it only has minor damage. The chassis looks ok (apart from being filthy), the spur cover is missing, but other than that it seems complete. I understand that the gearbox is a weak point and can see that the motor mount is 'a bit wobbly', but the gearbox sounds ok on running, so hoping strip and bearings it should be ok!

Any other useful hints and tips? I understand the madcap chassis is shared with the Astute and King Cab?

The King Cab only shares the transmission with the Madcap and the Astute. Chassis is way different.

Full strip down n clean, assess parts needed.
Rebuild with plea for parts on TC and I'm sure you'd have it operational in no time.

I got one for free last year from a kind TC member - good model for general running, maybe not the most sophisticated but as good if nit better than the modern entry level cars. Parts cheap and still fairly readily available.

I don't really know anything about this model - it was from the period when I got out of RC for a while. But it looks like a decent little buggy, and you can't beat the price... maybe I should ask my coworkers if any of them have any RC stuff lying around.

Looks pretty good! I used to have one of these. I don't believe it will be difficult to strip the body or replace it. These are excellent runners, too.

These are great.. i love my Madcap, the Astute is a good bet for some of your gear box spares as they was generally the same car just the Astute was more hopped up. If u can get the metal gear box plate makes a world of difference to the gear box.

if you require some spares i am sure i have some left over from my rebuild let me know.

I likey your rebuild! To the point and lets get driving! Any bits and bobs you have left over, please PM me, am just kicking off the strip and clean and am about to order bearings and some ball diff grease for the rebuild (had a quick look at the gearbox last night, and looks in very good condition).

With respect to the metal gearbox plate, that is def on my list of wants and I THINK I have spied some on ebay, but do you know the part number?

Just looked at the Astute manual. The Gear box plate is part number 4305252.

I will look through my parts.. i am sure i got a gear box cover case.. has a really minor split on one of the screw holes.. but does not effect it working or staying on the car.

Cool. I had a scan through ebay and found a king cab plate which I believe (hope!) is the same. Subsequently ordered. Following the complete strip of the chassis and rear end, all is well with the only broken item being one of the plastic tubes with a hex end that clamp the gearbox to the chassis (C3 I believe). That will be an easy fix.
So, just the front to tear down and clean which hopefully will be in equally good order!
