Ok, so bearing in mind I'm a newbie just finding my way in to this hobby, what realistic motor options are there that may offer a bit more punch than a tamiya sport tuned but without going in to lipo brushless territory. For now I have a Falcon, Fox and Sand Viper all running Tamiya sport tuned as well as a Super Astute in stock form that I plan to 'hop up' slightly and run. Would love any suggestions........

Do you want vintage motors - often expensive and more trouble than they are worth (high maintenance) for runners.

Tamiya is currently introducing new motor line up, but on the old line up the Dirt tuned, and RZ/TZ/BZ motors gave considerable improvements in speed and torque over the Sport Tuned. By the time you buy one of these motors, and potentially a new ESC to cope with the lower turns you are into EZRun brushless price points.

Ansmann Launcher motors are about £17 each and offer good performance for the money - available in soemthign like 15x2,17x2 and 19x2 varieties. I have a 17x2 in a Blitzer Beetle and its plenty for me and a nice step up from Sport tuned.

In fairness the Sport tuned motor offers a noticebale upgrade from the silver can kit motor for reasonable money, you need twice that money to get similar gain again within Tamiyas line up.

Ok thanks for responses, in answer to your questions Percymon - no I don't want potentially troublesome vintage motors and am also not worried if it's not tamiya, with this in mind perhaps the Ansmann Launcher is a good option. To be honest the Sport Tuned is plenty for my Falcon and Fox but was thinking for my Sand Viper (not vintage I know) and possibly Super Astute I could look at something with a little more oomph. If I did buy an Ansmann Launcher would I need to also buy compatible esc and pinion??

For a low turn, affordable ESC then the modelsport / mtroniks RV12 ESC is good value (£22).

The Ansmann Launcher motors have renewable brushes so probably a good idea to buy a set of these if/when you buy the motor.
Modelsport website have the Launchers and Kyosho K -speed motors for ca £13-15 at the moment
Plenty of other brushed motor options available via Fusion Hobbies / Modelsport and the like, but never used LRP or Orion motors so can't comment.A RV-12 ESC and a 14x2 motor should give you a noticeable upgrade - just bear in mind crashes wil be faster/harder and part breakages will increase (something to be wary of on vintage runners !)

good thing with SportTuned & 540s is that they're sealed cans, don't need no excuse for never maintaining them ;)

similar train with a bit more grunt would be HPI Firebolt 15T or (if there's room for 550 longer can) Traxxas 12T Titan
