Clear Coating

14 May 2007 - 11:03 AM

Is it best to wetsand (1500 grit) any small imperfections in the paintjob (dust that settled etc) and then clearcoat? Or will the lightly sanded areas show through the clear layer? Thanks

Vintage Drivers with no name

25 April 2007 - 09:13 PM

I always thought it was cool that Tamiya gave names to many of the Vintage Driver Figures, for better or worse - come'on "Hairy Ogre" for the Egress [:o]
Sadly, many of our vintage friends have gone with nameless drivers for all time. The Sand Scorcher, Sand Rover and FAV just to name a few.
I say we work to give these drivers honorary names in the Tamiya tradition! That means 'good names' and names likely chosen after 7 shots of scotch and a dare!

I'll start with an honorary name for the Sand Rover cowboy. Let's hear it for "Brim Johnson"!

Warning - Avoid Tamiya paint with paper labels!!

23 April 2007 - 10:20 PM

I started painting a Sand Rover shell last week and disaster happened due to an odd paint can. I have started stripping the shell to start over again [:'(].. The problem started with a can of TS-12 Orange that had an odd paper label instead of the information being printed onto the can (like normal). I always warm my paint cans in water before spraying and thought it was odd to see a paper label.
The spray coat came out more of a rust color than the nice Orange I expected. It also created runs even though the coats were fairly light?? I tried to wetsand the runs at the edges, but to no avail since the other Orange cans (without paper labels) sprayed a nice clean Orange that was lighter than the rusty Orange.... Three wetsanded coats later, and I could still see the discolored areas were the runs occurred (not acceptable).
I talked to Crash Cramer over the weekend and he remembered that the paper label cans were "Very Old". He hasn't seen them for many many years.
It looks like I was sold a can of Orange that may have been sitting on the shelf for the past decade!!! This color had obviously separated over time in the can and produced a very bad result..
Has anyone else ever run into a similar problem?

P.S. I did get a great stripping product called SAK (Strip A Kit). I should be able to restart on my shell in a day or two.

Wetsanding hard bodies for a better finish

17 April 2007 - 10:10 PM

I've read before that spraying the body and wetsanding between coats (with high grit sandpaper) can produce a much better finish. I know about wetsanding primer coats, but have not experimented with wetsanding color coats.
Does anyone have personal experience with this? How well did it work for you? Thanks.

Posting to SIG's

12 April 2007 - 01:06 AM

Is there any way to link multiple SIG's to one Showroom car? It appears you can only select one SIG per car. Thanks.
