Looking at your analysis of the Hornet/Grasshopper front "shock" mounts I can see where you're coming from, however, I think the cracking you're seeing is more a part of the tower being the weakest point in the link and the plastic getting old and hard. If you really want to look at a problem with a front end and materials used get yourself Striker(/Futaba FX/10) or Marui Hunter and take a look at what's holding the front end on and the toughness of the plastic the tub is made of.
FWIW, back in the day CRP came up with a "solution" for your front suspension problem with their oil shock hop-up kit. Here's a picture of my vintage Grasshopper with the hopup installed (along with a re-release body and decals although I just got a set of vintage stickers and will be redoing the thing as soon as I can free up the time.) Installing the thing pretty much involved cutting off the plastic and mounting a metal plate underneath.
Guess the lesson is the right material can provide you with a simpler solution than rebuilding/redesigning (and luckily in this case cost is really not a factor.)
