#496387 TXT-2 Build, Nice truck !

Posted by backtomyroots on 23 May 2013 - 12:07 AM

I ditched the stock wheels and tires in favour of IMEX Puller tires, stock txt-1 wheels and Monster Foam inserts.  I drilled 2 extra vent holes in each wheel as well.  The stock txt-2 tires are nearly as tall as the Imex Pullers but really narrow, had to go.

Installation was simple, wheels bolted right on.

The body has grown on me personally, at first I was gonna pitch it in the trash but thought I'd spent enough on this build so I painted it up and mounted it. Originally I was going to add a Blitzer Driver but have since dropped that idea.

Tamiya includes window masks for the windshield and the two side windows but you have to mask off the "extended cab windows" if you want those clear like mine.

The good news is, the body posts are very tall so there will be many body mounting options.  I trimmed mine right down for the stock body.

Electronics included an addition of an Integy Cooling fan which bolted right into place over top of the motor.  A spot is molded into the radio tray for two for them !

To be safe I added the optional cooling fan from Traxxas for the Velineon speed controller as well.

The receiver is hidden in an RC4WD scale radio box because the Traxxas waterproof one I originally purchased was too big to fit underneath the front body mount :o.

Again, I exchanged the diff casings for the discontinued GH Lightweight Alloy units (Yes, I even have a spare set yet!).

Attaching the axles to the chassis is straightforward, utilizing a 4 link set up.  The standard shocks were ditched for 8 Proline Powerstroke Scaler Shocks because I had 8 of them NIB laying around and thought it would add a nice touch.

Shocks were mounted by using 2mm spacers on the bottom and the Proline Shock Mounting Kit.

Front servo was installed as per instructions but I used aluminum servo mounts from Ebay and also beefy aluminum steering rods also from Ebay.  I also ditched the standard plastic steering hubs for aluminum steering knuckles purchased from Stellamodels.

Next, installation of the radio tray and battery holder. Here I replaced the stock plastic battery holder for a carbon fiber one from Xtreme Racing (Carbon Fiber goods):

For those new to the TXT drivetrain, the transmission allows the use of one or two motors installed. One brushless system is enough (Will start with the Traxxas Velineon).  You'll need to cover the extra motor mount hole, luckily I had a Novak cover designed specifically for this purpose (from my old discontinued HV Maxx system).

Shown installed:

Install is straight forward onto the chassis.  The chassis has two side plates for mounting your sponsor decals on, they are aluminum or steel and add a lot of extra weight to the chassis. A lighter option of maybe carbon fiber would be nice.

Chassis and center transmission built:

#484824 Tamiya, the Nintendo of R/C

Posted by backtomyroots on 19 February 2013 - 03:43 AM

Nintendo is to game consoles what Tamiya is to RC. It's the grandaddy of it all, everyone wanted one back in the 80s, both develloped into a very big industry. And now both Nintendo and Tamiya are losing ground to the competition. Thats my interpretation of it, you may or may not agree....

Disagree - Tamiya's soul is based on modelling with r/c as an extra branch.  The kits Tamiya produce range from very basic to very complex. There is something for everyone and I suspect it is influenced heavily by the Japanese market (much like Nintendo).

Traxxas ? Well, they are a Radio Control producer, strictly speaking so of course the development, research etc will be advancing.  Same for the others such as associated, team losi, team Durango, blah, blah, blah.

Tamiya however, has some very niche markets and does develop things, check the TRF models.

I encourage everyone to read the Master Modeller hard cover book to really understand the roots of Tamiya and the principles behind the decisions.

My two cents. :o

#478692 Skottoman's Scania R470 Build

Posted by backtomyroots on 07 January 2013 - 03:03 AM

Thread resurrection here folks.  After viewing skottoman's excellent build thread and admiring the finished product, I've just cracked the seal of my Scania Full Option kit.

Will be a long term full "dry" assembly for the winter, followed by a complete disassembly and painting in the spring :).

Hopefully it'll turn out half has beautiful as this one !
