2010 SS body correction
Okay, basically I wanted to make my Sand Scorcher re-re body look like the real thing. The obvious inspiration was the BugBox Sand Scorcher that Walter Jelinek built last year in Deutschland. You will need some hobby knives, files and sand paper. If you decide to use a dremel then you will have to be really careful.
Well, as you can see in the pictures, the main problem is the fenders. They're flat as Florida because that's what was left after Tamiya cut the original ones off (in 1986) of the pudgy 1979 Sand Scorcher body. Don't let that dishearten you guys. The remnants have a profile so thick that you can work them up with a file or sand paper to make them look as if they were curved. You just have to work the upper side of the fender and leave the lower side untouched. Other important thing is to cut a bit the lower sides to make a correct round shape. You can do the same with the rear ends of the rear fender flares, and of course, the front ones must be cut to make them look like the original Baja style. See pictures to get an idea.
Pictures of the finished thing, painted and ready to go, will follow this. Hopefully by the end of June.
Good luck with your SS builds, guys.
You all have a great Wednesday! :)

nice work Erich, with a little heat and your fingers you can actully contour the flares down at the edges. Use controlled heat, not an open flame, if you do decide to try that.

Can't deny I thought of doing that, Christian, but I was in the doubt about the results of such thing because I have no molds to shape them correctly on both sides. You see, in days like these even though I paid $20 for this re-re body I can't afford to ruin it.

SMOKE-DOG
Nice work. Never noticed those differences.

Very nice work Erich. I know I am not quite the modeler you are so I will have to use these techniques to get my bugs to look so cool. Can't wait for the finished product.

Thanks for the kind words SMOKE-DOG, Fernado Alonso, Dante77, SB Aust, Challenger-RT, and Crash Cramer. I'm in hopes you will find this info useful when you build your own buggies!
brayling
Great work, looking superb, are you going to sand some ribs to get the slick tires?
Looking forward to seeing the next step keep us posted.
mongoose1983
@brayling: Thanks, mate! I'll keep these tires as they are. I only need to get some bolts I'm missing for them Anyway, I yet have to receive the missing bits and then buy the rear cage. I was expecting to have it ready by the end of this month as a way to celebrate my birthday but I see this one will be ready sometime early in August. So pictures of the completed specimen will have to wait until then. Oh, well...

Thanks for the kind words ShayD, tuff bug, def4x4, and henrikw. Sometimes I feel that working these old buggies is even better than running them!

A brilliant idea! You've done well to spot it and convert it into model form. I've pinched the front wing idea for my latest..
