I guess it was inevitable that once the Bruiser re-release had soaked up all of the frenzy surrounding the comeback of this classic chassis, then the reintroduction of it's less famous brother would attract much less of a fanfare. And that is a bit of a shame, since this is yet another awesome re-release from Mr Tamiya.

And although the Bruiser is rightly the truly iconic kit, it's arguably the case that the Mountaineer.....or Mountain Rider, as we are now to call it....is the better looking of the two. The rear bed-cab of the Bruiser is not to everyone's taste, but the good news is that this part has now been moulded seperately and can therefore be removed to suit individual tastes.

It seems that Tamiya know already that this one will not go down with the same storm as the Bruiser and have therefore made it on a limited edition number. A wise choice, in my opinion, and one that might ironically make this the more desireable kit in the future.

New name...but has all the punch of the original! Classic artwork returns as per usual. Surprising amount of remaining space in the box. Upper half of box contents.... ...and lower half. Paperwork & decal goodness. Metal goody box contents. Also nabbed the cosmetic hop-ups... ...and finally has it's own driver after 25 years. Stands loud and proud alongside it's brother!

As impressive as the Bruiser?

Lucky guy, you are. Nice to see they painted the framerails for us lazy folks , but not the body

Cheers Chris. I am not even sure which colour I will paint it yet. Not keen on the Mica Red so might go with a nice pearl white to contrast against the decals.

Well, white would be closer to the molded color, so I automatically like that better. I can't say I have been in love with the Mica red ever, all the Toyota trucks like this I have ever seen in public are one of three colors, MOSTLY TAN, then nice dark blue and then there is Marty's truck from BTTF in BLACK.

White with white wheels looks awesome. Enjoy!

Well I have commented on the forums that the Mica Red is a very strange colour, in that it can look completely different in certain lights. I do like it when it looks bright and orange-like (as in the studio photo shown below) but too often it has that plum hue to it and I am not keen on that.

I agree with the color shift in lighting as I have the same delima on another color. I guess most color are like that. Try the Italian red I have on my retro hilux on a small model. I'm very happy with it on mine.

Thanks JYCM3. Your Hilux is a beauty and the colour is lovely. I was thinking of that exact colour....TS-85 I believe?

Wandy! Congrats on a fine acquisition! Planning to keep or build her? And after reading your description above I have to say that I agree with the fact that the cab is not to everyone's taste - as they say 'each to their own'. In saying that I am more of a fan of the the Mountaineer/Mountain Rider, looks more custom looking. Yes the Bruiser is a cool looking Machine, but the MR is cooler in my books. Cheers

Cheers Sunny, this one is going to be a runner, meaning that my Bruiser can now forever be a shelfer....when I get round to building it, lol. I have only recently come round to thinking that the Mounty is the better looking of the two but, really, there is not much in it as they are both awesome.
