For years and years, Tamiya made hay while the sun shined brightly on the vintage RC boom, gleefully knocking out classic re-releases galore whilst other iconic manufacturers of the same era steadfastedly refused to join in. Who knows why, but maybe those others either dismissed the craze as a passing fad or perhaps thought the idea was a backwards step for the industry.

It seems though that a decade of relentless success for Tamiya has forced some of those same manufacturers to admit that they misjudged the situation, resulting in Kyosho finally getting on board with the re-release of the Scorpion, Beetle and Tomahawk over the last 12 months....and of course Associated Electrics a year before that with the re-introduction of the legendary original RC10 'gold pan' buggy.

And it seems that AE quickly developed an appetite for the re-releases as, within a few months after the Classic had hit the stores, they really dropped a bombshell by bringing back the Worlds Car, the 'hopped up to the max' version of the RC10. This buggy swept all before it in the early 1990s.

This kit probably represents the pinnacle of where vintage RC technology was developed to, when the use of metal was still a prominent feature of the chassis design. From then on the industry moved away from metal and it was largely plastic and carbon fibre that held sway in designers' thinking.

According to AE this re-release was not supposed to be a limited edition kit in the way that the Classic was. However they do seem to be in increasingly short supply at the moment. Whether this is due to the well known gearbox teething problems that became apparent in the kits...meaning they have decided to pull the plug...remains to be seen, but I didn't want to take the risk of missing out on this one as it is a very iconic figure in RC and a must have for the collection.

2 Unexpected, but very welcome. 1 Original box artwork also returns. 1 It's all in there somewhere... 1 Minimal amount of parts. Maximum effect... 1 ..when cutting weight was the name of the game. 1 'Turbo Mirage' body and wing. 1 No chance of not noticing these! 1 Easier to build than the original too. 1 A RC racing icon. 1 Another growing family...!

So THAT'S what they look like on the inside. Very cool write up and I just hope Traxxas doesn't get their thoughts on any re released stuff as much of their stuff is all over ANY 'hobby' shop I walk into these days around these parts. I can't even FIND a Tamiya in any of these 'shops' since they are not Ready to Run as everything seems to be that in these 'shops' over here in my neck of the woods. Pitiful really if you think of it. Seems most of the time, if you are lucky, the paint is the only thing you will see the Tamiya twin stars.

Cheers Chris. Do Traxxas actually have anything iconic worth re-releasing anyway?

One of the best ever, release or original! I luv mine. The build was great. Did have a gear box issue, but AE resolved it with a email or two very quickly. Its awesome to drive with Reedy Mach 2 9.5T!

Nice edition! I agree, these re-re AE cars are really awesome and should've been here long before they were. Perhaps Thunder Tiger, well aware of Tamiya's success with re-re's, wisely realized the potential for the same particularly with a race-proven brand like AE. I pre-ordered the re-re gold pan as soon as I heard about it and waited over 4 months for it. I promised myself I would be financially disciplined and NOT get a World's edition but it's been increasingly difficult to do so especially since seeing a bunch of them race at the VONATs last year (including Kinwald who won the A-Main with his).

Awesome kit Wandy and very possibly my favourite alloy pan RC10. I rub my hands in glee to know that two of these are in my stash. ('You known 'the stash!') Well done as always mate!

Cheers Mallo, glad to know you've got one of these stashed away too, lol. Definitely an RC icon.
