Detailed chassis pics of the 4-linked Grasshopper Truck
Following on from my post of the 4-linked Grasshopper, here are the long-awaited chassis pics. Essentially the Grasshopper chassis is unchanged. The front shock towers were removed and a Top Force rear shock tower fitted to the servo posts to mount the front shocks. A threaded rod to the rear of the chassis was added for stability and the shock tower is now very solid.
The rear end was more complicated. The gearbox needs heavy modification to mount the links. The standard forward links on the gearbox need to be narrowed slightly so the lower links are parallel, and an eye needs to be attached atop the gearbox, dead-centre. I used a slither of metal inside the gearbox to spread the load.
Sadly on its maiden run the very old Hopper gearbox split open, so this has been consigned to the shelf. I have a new-built, never-run Hopper box but I don't know if I can be bothered to fix it if it will never be run anyway. Radio, ESC and Super Stock BZ will probably find their way into something else very soon.

Great project! How about a movie to see it run?

Unfortunately it won't run anywhere until I get around to replacing the rear gearbox - that means making all the cuts and customisations all over again. I think I might just leave it on the shelf now, the Yeah! Racing shocks are a little too firm, the tyres are too bouncy, and it just bounces along and rolls over!

The coolest 'Grasshopper' I ever seen

I really must get around to fixing up this truck. The gearbox broke around 2 years ago and I've never replaced it, although a brand new transmission is sat on the shelf right next to it. I might even give it a gentle run at the next meet.
