| description | I always want to do this ... Before the weekend I went to a store of all kinds of plastic bags and bought 2 kg of PVC shrink bags, 40cm and 55cm in width that fit most Tamiya box sizes. The shrinking material is sold in a bulk package of 200 meters, just too much for any DIY buyer so they can also split it in kg, that's why the measurement. The shrink material is in a tubing form before packing, so 1. Measure and cut the desired length (box width+1/2 height+5cm) 2. Seal one end of the bag that properly cut 3. Slip your NIB into the bag 4. Seal the other end of the bag 5. Cut and seal the excessive material at the four corners 6. Shrink it and enjoy!! The shrink packing helps protect the paper box, parts, tires from moisture and oxidization since it's almost a vacuum state inside the box if properly sealed. Also it keeps the dust and any substance in the air away from the box. You need a heat gun(better) or a hair dryer to do the job, as well as a handy or table sealer. **The film I used is something called PVC, cheap and available, it's rather stiff and brittle if shrank. The original TamiyaUSA shrinkwrap applied another material called POF (Polyolefin), which is much softer, and expensive, mostly done by machine. This may help to verify what you have on hand. From the comments I see worry of sealed NIB can be a fraud and it is very much possible. But it is your right to ask any seller to remove the shrink to see the interior before you pay for it. Sealing the box is never a common practice in most markets outside US after all, and IMHO, it does not add value to the item whatsoever. |

Now made me think twice about sealed NIB & demand to see contents before handing over the cash. Very interesting & helpful thank you. Saying that I would only buy in the U.K. & want to collect from their house so I no who's door to knock on if NIB Toyota Hilux ends up being a frog! LOL. Trust me I would get my money back LOL. Very interesting thank you
I have bought many NIB 'vintage' SEALED kits over the years & never paid a premium for them over & above 'openend' kits. I ALWAYS open them up check the parts & photgraph the kits which I then repackage in bubble wrap put a BLACK plastic bin liner to avoid sun damage & store for my kids future! NEVER HAD ANY NASTY SUPRISES THANK GOD!!!! check out my showroom
BeetleLover: 'alternative contents' gave me a good laught!
Has anyone out there ever opened a sealed NIB to find alternative contents? Someone could even possibly put in another cheaper kitset providing the box was the same size... it certainly would sound authentic...
Just add some desiccant bags inside... for long term storage it is better to do so.
makes you wonder doesnt it, but then sellers know what lengths collectors will go to to get the exclusive deal
If I'll ever buy a vintage sealed NIB I'll have to scan it with som x-ray equipment after seeing this
I just think that all these 'NIB Sealed' kits are just re-sealed, i personally could nto and would not just buy a kit and leave it sealed, you would ahve to check it to 'Make sure' at the very least or unpack eveything to have a look at it at least!. Just my opnion maybe others agree/disagree LOL
So it's like: Take an empty box, fill it with junk, seal it and sell it on ebay as 'sealed NIB'. LOL! And most people will probably keep it sealed for years.
Thats a nice tip and a great idea, thanks for sharing!
That's a good idea. Nice hint.
Yup i think quite a lot of the 'NIB sealed' kits sold these days are actually re-sealed like this.
Very clever. Just shows how careful you should be when buying 'mint NIB sealed' models!
