Two years had passed since the original RM Mk1 was released and the market for 1/12th scale pan racers had grown tremendously - everyone from Associated, Schumacher, Delta, Kyosho, ABC etc were in the game. It was time for Tamiya's total redesign which took into account less weight by leaving out some of the less-used adjustability that RM1 offered. RM3 could now take 7.2V stick packs and a whole new adjustable mechanical speed controller (now known as the "SuperChamp MSC"...!) debuted; similarly the RM3's steering arrangement also returned to the simpler setup as per Tamiya's "First 10" road cars, although with adjustable caster. Ditto use of a separate radioplate/mechanism-deck. Another nice retrograde touch was provision of the rear carry-handle! (Original description by Willy Chang)
