  1. Hi folks,

Have you noticed how many of us have mentioned the fact that when we were young that the money just wasn't there to buy a car? Same story goes for me. There were many other things that I would have liked as a young boy, air rifle, knives etc, (is it any wonder I joined the Army)?!! Once I had a wage coming in I started buying all the things that were 'missing' from my childhood. The air rifle was sold over ten years ago but last year I bought my first Tamiya from a friend. It's a M03 Mini Cooper. Since then a few more cars have followed but like many other TC members, I'm married, have a child and other financial commitments. The one feeling I get from buying something that wasn't there as a child is the sense of achievement. It sounds a little sad that I'd get such a sense from owning a RC model but I do. Not only that but I know for a fact that I'm not alone. Some of you have mentioned the memories that come flooding back when you look at a paricular model.

Mervyn's post caught me attention in that he hasn't driven any of the models for around two years but yet remains hooked on the hobby. My son in 4yrs old and always wants to help me when I get a car out and start cleaning it, repairing or whatever. Not only do I hope that he can recall these memories when he's older but I also hope that he'll become interested in the hobby too. Collecting or buying to sell, each to there own. Take a moment to think about what the word passion really means and then think about everything else other than actually driving our models, that contributes towards our passion for the hobby. Memories for childhood, bidding on something that we really want or need and the anticipation that goes along with, 'will I win it or not',building a new car, sharing time with younger family members as we run the cars, the nagging from our partners, the solution to a RC problem...............the list goes on.

I like passion, and I know others within TC know what I mean.

    Thanks,

    Karl.

  2. Hi folks,

I'm looking for a book on Electic buggies and also one on touring car racing. They must contain 'how to' sections with the likes of tuning, gear ratios and race preparation etc. There are two perfect books here in Germany which cover both of these topic. If only I could read German!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me know what you know folks. I'm looking for some recent publications, nothing too old as I've found a couple of books but they were first published back in the seventies!

    Kind regards,

    Karl.

  3. Stu,

I've started looking for one of these TC3 things on the old Ebay but most people are selling parts for them! I suppose this is good in that if I get on, I'll be able to get spares. I think the TA02 will have to be either a fun car or get it sold to put money towards something raceable. It's fast though and I like it so I'm not sure if I'll sell it. We'll see.

    Cheers for the comeback though.

    Karl.

  4. stulec52,

I have driven on a track so I'd like to have a go at a local club, (if I could find it). I know I'm not likely to make a podium appearance condidering my current ability but I'm the type of guy would try and prove a point too. Just by looking at the kind of cars and equipment these guys at the LRP had, I know what you mean about how much money some people can spend.

As I'm fairly new to this, could you tell me what kind of suspension you were using? Was is stock springs or oil filled shocks?

    Thanks for your reply.

    Kind regards,

    Karl.

  5. Hi folks,

Has anyone ever raced with a TA02? I know this is the age of the Carbon Fibre chassis but they must have been raced at sometime. Someone out there must have raced these bad boys, what set up did you have. I have one with a GM 17 turn motor and it seems to go at some speed. I recently went to a round of the LRP Challenge and the cars there went almost too fast to control. Any clues for suspension etc would be greatly received.

    Kind regards,

    Karl.

  6. west coast customiser,

Here's a website that you may be interested in as it has a short video you can dowload. It shows the simplicity in which saddle pack can be made. Just have a look. If you're in any doubt just ask questions in the forum sections. I'm new to the hobby and everyone has been really helpful with all the questions I've posed. If you need to know something then this is the place to find the info. Cut and past the link below and it should give you all the info you need. Buying the individual cells on ebay will be your cheapest option. Once I've sold one of my kidneys and can afford a carbon fibre race car, this'll be the road I'll be taking!!

    Good luck mate,

    Karl.

  7. Hi gozone,

Glad to hear that you had a great time in Germany, apart from the Stau or two! I think the Germans are attracted to yellow flashing lights in the same way that bees are to flowers!

I'm also glad that the Tamiya badge thing worked. I would have loved to have gone and met you. There will be other years I'm sure, maybe something in between now and then. Not between Oct-Apr though as I'll be in Iraq!

Did you manage to get anything for free whilst you were there?

    Take care,

    Karl.

  8. Hi Folks,

After looking around at different chargers, I've been giving great thought to getting a Swallow Advance from T2M. It's got a good rating and it's not too cheap. The spec on it says it can do a lot more than I'll ever need.

Has anyone had any dealings with this brand in the past? I don't think it does that 'zapping' thing though Live Steam Mad.

    Kind regards,

    Karl.

I think that pitch is the correct word for the depth of teeth on a cob/gear.

    NYDriver

You say that you've NEVER had this problem? Did you buy your GH from new? I'm thinking that who ever had mine before me may well of changed something. If that's not the case, which I'm not 100% convinced about then I'm confused that you have been able to slot a 540 straight in and not encountered the problem of the pinion being far away from the spur gear. I wish I was that lucky! I'll be asking my local model shop this weekend for he cost of the Brat accessories. I also need bits for my mini cooper as I found that hitting kerbs at 40kph is not good for turn knuckles!! Keep that advice coming folks, I'm learning the RC 'Black Magic' quite fast!

    Thanks one and all,

    Karl.

  10. bholio,

The charger I have says the following on the bottom:

    Output:8.4v---3.0A 6.0v---70mA 12v---70mA

It doesn't say on it that it's for either NiCad or NiMh but I'm assuming that it's for Nicad. What I've been doing in the future is charging the batts for an hour, (on timer) or until all four of the chargers lights are lit. I do keep a very close eye on the batts and I do check to see if they're getting too hot. I had a batt leak and another on melted the plastic cover! I've read here in some of the feed back that I should stop using the batts once car performance drops. What I've been doing is to stop using the batt, put it on a discharger and then recharge the day before I intend on using the batts. I've since learnt that this is not such a good idea.

If I didn't discharge the batts and was to put them back on charge for an hour, it would most certainly overheat.

I think you're right though, I must buy a peak detection charger. I've just bought three LRP 3300 NiMh batts from ebay for Euros 38. This is quite cheap I think, the guy said they were only bought last November and used 10 times each.

I'd like to go to a local indoor race track and try to race but after being at a LRP competition this weekend as a spectator, I don't think my trusty TA02 would be much of a threat! I need to learn better control of the car as it is very fast with a GM 17 turn motor. After seeing the kind of cars that were racing there just blew my mind. All the kit they take to the race with them is just amazing and there was some wierd looking batts. I'm not ready for the world of single cell batts. This hobby really is full of 'black magic' mysteries!!

Many thanks, one peak detection charger coming up. Is there one that will charge more than one batt at a time?

    Karl.

  11. I'm not going to fully disharge my Nimh's anymore. The problem that I have is that I don't have a Peak Detection charger. If I put them onto my fast charger will they be 'over charged' and melt or leak? And how is the high current put through the batteries? Is it with a special charger?

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Karl.

  12. Right, I'll hunt down a 50192 Subaru Brat pinion gear set and give it a go. Many many thanks for everyones help. As I've mentioned before, I'm new to this hobby but very willing to learn. All I'll need to finish the job after the gear set is a receiver, ESC and it'll be working. It could do with new front tyres. Are these easy to find?

    Thanks folks,

    Karl.

  13. Oh yeah, what on earth do you lot mean by 'zapping' a battery? The last 'zap' I had was when I tried repairing my washing machine, forgot to unplug it and ended up in intensive care. That did very little in the way of reconditioning my body!! So what is it then?

    Karl.

  14. Thanks for some good feedback there folks, keep it coming as I think we'll all benifit from this. BLAZING DRAGON!!!! How are you butt? Nice to hear from you, not heard of your village but lets face it...........you'd only find some of them if you were lost!! I'm from one of em!

As for do not disharge NiMh. Why not? Does this damage them as I'm always discharging them. Someone said to stop when the power drops and to recharge from there. Is it not a good idea to prop up a car and let the power drain totally then? Please tell me this doesn't do any harm as this is what I've been doing up unitl I bought a couple of dishargers. The charger I'm using by the way is an ANSMAN ACT28 TRIPLE OUTPUT FAST CHARGER. It has a 12v and a 6v + & - bit with Transmitter above the 12v and Receiver above the 6v. I gather you can get rechargable batts for both Tranny and Receiver?

Black magic, that's what this hobby is........BLACK MAGIC!

    C'mon the Welsh!

  15. DimmaDan,

What you could also do is to cut up some stiff metal such as wire coat hanger and place them into the plaster of paris mix. This of how concrete is laid and how some building structures are made. They have thick steel rods to add strength. If you're going to be moving this stuff around, a extra bit of strength may prolong the life of your markers. Just an idea!

    Karl.

  16. Ok folks, lets recap!

Dunebuggy71 says that I don't need the plastic mount that the original motor was on. I've gathered that so far. Next I need to find an 18 tooth pinion. I have a 19 tooth but it looks nothing like the type that was on the origianl motor. Are you talking about a larger diameter pinion with 18 teeth? I'm going to post this and then have a look at the manuals on page 14. Do I look at the manual for the GH1 or GH2?

    Regards,

    Karl.

  17. Dunebuggy71,

You say it's an 18 tooth pinion, but is that the original pinion? I ask this as I've tried an normal 21 tooth pinion. Remember that the original motor is mounted on a mount that moves it closer to the spur gear. What I want to do is use an modern 540 motor on the old Grasshopper set up. I have noticed that the old pinion has rather large teeth compared to the 'modern' pinions. You'll have to bare with me if I'm missing something here as all this is like 'black magic' to me! All the help you guys are offering is not falling on deaf ears, I'm just starting out on the technical side of the RC world.

    Thanks to everyone,

    Karl.
