[:I] Unfortunately girls have toys that most of us don't like. But luckily, this one doesn't mind sharing mine so that's ok too. Peaceful matrimony... for the time being. []
  2. Make sure you have a copy of the gearbox blown-up diagram before you take any screws off... [] this is the diagram on the side of the mustard/green/yellow inner box. It is *not* in the manual. Take motor off with its 2 screws. Once the motor is off it'll reveal another 3 screws (covered by motor). Take these off and you'll be able to remove the front section with the big white nylon spur & slipper clutch. Once you've got it in your hands, hold the big spur in one hand and the smaller gear in the other hand and twist... you'll hear the pak-pak-pak as it rotates. There should be quite a bit of friction between them, it should be able to transmit a fair bit of torque before slipping.
  3. quote:Originally posted by flybyGive it a year and i'm sure your wife won't bother you anymore, you'll be divorced![:0][)] (just kidding)[] id="quote">id="quote">Ouch, Mikey! [:0] At least *my* wife is luckier, in the sense that she *knew* what she was getting into. Otherwise, yeah, the courts might see "Tamiya Collecting" as legitimate grounds for divorce. [}] You guys who get hooked on the habit post-wedding better watch out... she might end up take half your toys!! []
  4. Nah, doesn't sound like Tamiya at all. They never made "twin motor" things which were the rage in the late 80s... usual suspects are Tyco, Metro and the like during the 'Jet Hopper' era.
  5. quote:Originally posted by mr_lister999.If thats right i would have bought a new kit! id="quote">id="quote">Probably a good reason as any why (1) the 29-95 chassis is still there and (2) NIB kits aren'!?? [] Yeah, Tamiya aren't that charitable when it comes to parts prices - add up all the parts in the average kit and it'll come to 3-5X kit price. (strangely these days, you can't even buy *every* part of most kits as spares in "SP pack") Then again, it isn't any different if you priced up the spares in your 1:1, otherwise how to wrecker yards stay in business? Shops put a larger profit margin on SPs too; well, its a smaller $ transaction, still takes the same time to process and its a pain/risk to stock especially for the lower-volume models. Smaller items = higher risk of pilfering too. Kits at least look good on the shelf, they attract eyes and can be sold by themselves. Spares on the other hand is only a 'duty', you can have $x0,000s all hung on the walls and it doesn't look like much. It could be much more efficient to have it all 'centralised' nationally/internationally... but don't hold your breath.
  6. quote:Originally posted by ShodogI learned the hard way when my moutaineer shocks leaked all over the shelf. id="quote">id="quote">How worn are these, Jim? Touch wood, but none of the Mounty/Wild1/Hornet shockers that we have sitting around have any sign of leaking, even the well-used ones. Slightly wet shafts is about as bad as it gets, definitely no drips. The rubber seal isn't fantastic, but if its built *correctly* (make sure they're bled, free-piston located correctly - no oil in the top airspace) there shouldn't be any buildup of pressure inside and they're good enough to keep thicker oils in. Imho if they're bad enough to drip then they're pretty shot & time for rebuild.
  7. quote:Originally posted by SjoerdSo, I am BEGGING you. PLEASE PLEASE don't snipe this one, I am really willing to buy it. If you snipe it I'd be really hurt. id="quote">id="quote">Sorry matey, that that sorta sounds like "collusion"... [!] wouldn't be very fair for the Vendor, would it? Especially with a ebay name like that, it wouldn't need Poirot to recognise who he probably is. [] All's Fair in Love & War!!
  8. oh when the saints...! come marching in...! oh when the saints.. come.. marching.. in...!!! Oh yeah! Within last 6 hrs, he's gotten FOUR -ve FBs. SHO's nose knows; the fish starts rotting from the head.
  9. Hiya Aaron, good to see ya over here in 'giant' [] land!! Playing with the Big boys now, not just Bit parts. [] Hmm... anyone does shareware race mgmt s/w? Or just lapcounting?
  10. quote:Originally posted by chungleongThe 1:1 scale drifter guys, the good ones, don't use the handbrake to initiate a drift. Its my goal to get the car tuned to just a bit less than neutral, biased to the front wheels, such that the weight shifting under braking gets the tail to hang out nicely. id="quote">id="quote">Why not try a TA03F's tub in your car... even more weight forwards. Actually, you shouldn't be using the 1:1 handbrake under *any* circumstances... the cable isn't designed for hard yanking. (Handbrake turns aren't very good for cars either.) Real 1:1 drifters would never use a handbrake; yeah sure they brake whilst approaching into the corner - this shifts weight to the front, more grip to the front wheels. To get the rear end moving, you'd then step on the gas (best be in gear-range where you have the best torque). Modulate the slippage with the throttle only, never brakes; countersteer in direction of intended travel. Overcook the power and you'll do donuts or go off backwards [:0] (don't ask, just between me and the borrowed S2000, ok?). Locked rear diff or LSD would probably help too. When the tyres came back to grip in the '73 240Z (another 'wow' drifter! With brandnew tyres on the front and 20yo Michelins at the back, whaddya expect??[:I]) the diff/drivetrain always had a defening KLONK. Having the seat pretty much on top of rear axle also makes for good control. Surprisingly one can drift with a FWD too... just steer, weight-shift, countersteer. However you cannot control the drift length and definitely cannot drift around a circle. These days I only get to drift with a Bit Char-G... [^]

I'd just predict some nil-fb fella will probably put in a $1 bid real soon, just to get spoil the BIN option for everyone. [] (and no, won't be me bidding)
  12. Just surfin' on a little dreamzone here... [8D] Any one tried setting up a personal lapcounting system before? Starting say with a PC + some kind of simple serial/parallel data acquision board, maybe with beam sensors - to do just 1 car on the track. Nothing as fancy as a full-on AMB system, of course. Thinking of something affordable, portable, reliable and simple. And if you can build it into a PDA, better still... Any better ideas re car identification? Then can expand system to do more than 1 car too, and allow others on the track at the same time.

  15. quote:Originally posted by wldnasthis is the first time ive seen an Off-road Mini-Z though, I didnt know they did them...or are they something new? shame they only have Paris-Dakar style trucks, I imagine the chassis design is too bulky to allow a buggy version? id="quote">id="quote">Yes, its a new release for which I'm told production has just started. They are 2WD only; all new MiniZ chassis with the 4 shocks and larger wheels. Most of the bodyshells are race trucks, but there seems to be a plain silver Toyota Landcruiser too if you don't like sponsor logos. I'm sure Kyosho will bring out heaps more other 4X4/SUV shells soon. Pix from the HLJ site.
  16. "mini" Optima Bajabug was the 2nd vehicle I ever bought for the collection, same day as the 1st on 9-9-99. Previous owner evidently had too much cartooning time on his hands (said his friend did it though).
  17. Too true, Theo. Knew a kid who bought Grasshoppers by the case. [:0] (Yeah, "case" - they come 6 to a case like good wine.) This kid also had too much free time, too much free money and too much free fireworks. [}] And lived on a hillside property with a 30' cliff. So one could also say, too much free flight. [xx(]

  20. quote: Originally posted by c_a_r_t_e_r but I can't get the solder to take on the can.. any suggestions/tips?! id="quote">id="quote"> Tim:- you can also put an eyetag under one of 2 the motorcan screws. If you are heating the can, you'll need a pretty powerful iron - say 60-80W as a minimum. Otherwise the heatsinks will just dissipate the heat before it warms up enough to flow solder.
  21. quote: Originally posted by DJTheo You can use also non-polarized electrolytic capacitors, ie ones that don't have +- symbols id="quote">id="quote"> Aren't these quite a bit dearer, Theo? Think they were last time I stocked up. More expensive than green polys. Good thing with 'lytics are you can buy them in axial config (wire coming out of each end, like a battery), which is handier for the +/- jump.
  22. quote: Originally posted by DJTheo Higher capacity filters more noise but also works like a battery, that is makes the motor respond slower to accelerating or braking as the capacitor has first to be charged or discharged, like everything again a compromise [] id="quote">id="quote"> Yup, that's when its connected to the *motor&, Theo. A bigger cap (eg 2000-3300uF) 'softens' the response. Conversely there are some ESCs that want it connected to the battery side. Changing these have less effect, but the difference is the reverse. Bigger cap gives more 'punch. EVERYONE:- also be careful on ESC's requirements... some "3-WIRE" style ESCs need a Diode across the motor. Novak sells these 'power' diodes.
  23. quote: Originally posted by Razer I don't think you need shrinkwrap, you're basically soldering then from the endbell to the can and from each side of the endbell to the other. But I would make the leads as short as possible for neater appearance. Also keeps them from getting caught on something and knocked off if a runner. [^] id="quote">id="quote"> Simple case of better b safe than sorry. You've got a component that's about 5-8mm wide and its gotta span a width of about 25mm. Especially on the metal endbell 540s, its very easy to have the caps pushed against the bushing's metal housing. Next time you hit the gas, all you get is smoke from MSC/ESC and no go.
