I thought about doing the ever-popular Hopper/Hornet baja, but I'm too trigger happy with 2 wheel drive buggies. I like the idea of the Baja king because it has decent ground clearance and is cheap. I had the rally version, and liked the amount of speed it had. Maybe the fish-tailing of 2wheel drive cars is part of the fun!

I have wanted to make a "Poor man's Scorcher" for a while, but I don't really like the way 2 wheel drive buggies handle. I was thinking about using a Baja King with a spare lexan beetle shell I have. Anybody tried this? Should I use a Gravel Hound/RS/Plasma Edge instead?

Thanks!

So, slightly longer shocks in the rear might eliminate the need for a 3rd rear shock?

-
I've never tried a Dirt-Tuned, but the Sport Tuned motors are really great.

-
The Traxxas truck has the same basic driveline as the XL-5 Stampede and Rustler, which would be fine if not for the crappy plastic motor plate.

I should let my wife read this thread. It might help her understand my condition a little better.

-
They're a little more expensive than the sidewinder, but you could also try 2 of the Novak sport systems. Maybe a pair of 13.5's or 10.5's........

If you put small o-rings (or fuel tubing) on the male plug it leaves a very small gap that helps you get a grip on them. I saw that tip in RC Driver (I think); it works pretty well.

While I think the Monster Beetle is one of the coolest models, I think I want to part with mine. I would like to either get some cash for it or trade for something.
I paid US $125 for it and bought a few additional parts so I'd like to get somewhere close to that.
As far as trades go, I'd be interested in Clod parts, dual motor speed control, a mini, a Blackfoot Xtreme, Twin Det......who knows?
If you're the least bit interested, let me know.
Here it is:

I thought the Dagger used 32pitch pinions?

This 550 is the motor that came with the Kyosho Streamliner and Harborstar. It's meant for 7.2v. If there is a basic "silver can" 550 - this is probably it.
Rob
I couldn't find those, but the Twinstorm uses 19 turn 550 motors.
-
550's are like 540 motors in that they come in different numbers of turns. In general, 550 motors have a bit more torque than 540 motors. You do have to be sure you use one that is meant for whatever voltage you run. (7.2 or 14.4, etc.)

-
I think 550 motors can be run as if they were 540 motors with more turns. For instance, a Traxxas Xl-5 ESC can run a 12 turn 550 or a 15 turn 540. I'm not 100% sure why this is, though.
The 101BK speed control is only supposed to run 27(or 23?) turn motors, officially, but people run hotter motors sometimes without problems.

What are the measurements (length) for the shocks?
Thanks!

If you live near a Radio Shack you might be able to score some GP3300 packs for about $25(really good deal). At one time they were supposed to have been replaced with lower quality packs at the same price, but I saw some of the GP's at my local Radio Shack recently. Might be worth a look.

I'm no expert, but here's a little info:
NiCad (Nickel Cadmium)packs are still around but are sort of "old-school" at this point. I think the highest capacity one of these packs can hold is 2400mah.
I think it is recommended to fully discharge these to avoid "cell memory"-if that happens they won't fully charge.
NimH are probably most common now. They can hold a lot more than nicads(more run time)-up to 5000mah, but can't be charged on a nicad-only charger. These actually need to be stored with some charge on them so the cells don't get damaged.
More advanced stuff like Lipos (Lithium Polymer) or Lithium-Ion or Lithium Manganese are lighter and can have huge capacities, but they are expensive and require special chargers and special care.
Hope this helps....
Again, I'm no expert-I'm sure some of the guys here know way more.

Here is mine. CR01 wheels and tires rub the front steering rods. Needs more offset.

That looks really sharp!

I had one of these for a little while, but I sold it. I liked the simplicity and the speed was good, but since I'm not one for throttle control it fish-tailed a lot.

The ground clearance was a little low, but overall I kind of miss my Sand Viper.

Current group:
Runner Wheely King (only one actually running right now)
Runner Lunchbox (new body mounts on order, really needs a new shell, too)
Hopefully-soon-to-be-runner Super Clodbuster (needs bearings, body, steering parts)
Monster Beetle that sort-of runs with a crunching diff (probably will be sold)
My main project which has slowed my other projects, though, is my 4 month old daughter.

I'm not sure about the limit, but in a stock E-zilla/Savage the ESC runs a pair of 21 turn 550's. (I think)

Same problem for me but with the Traxxas Connector. Great tips form here from many members:
Are the Traxxas connectors just as difficult as Deans? They seem like they should be a little easier to work with. I would have already switched over to them if they were free.

-
That's exactly what I need. Now to find them! I see a few sets on eBay but they're all in the far east. Maybe I'll have to give that a try for the first time.

I need the same sort of thing. I was thinking about these:

Anybody used these?

Baja King To Baja Bug-will It Work?

Thanks guys!
I actually quite like the Blitzer beetle
, but I want something still in production. All of these suggestions are great, but I'm still gravitating towards the BK because it's a very simple design. (steering, etc.) I guess my main concern was about the dimensions. Hopper-Scorchers look great, and the BK is very close to the same length, so it seemed feasible.
