  1. Not at all. The fabled, enchanted 4 slots were ridiculously fast. The hand outs were notably slower. But that was OK, because they were ALL the slower by the same margin. I shouldn't be surprised about the strikers, I handed my kit Striker with MSC and pogo-shocks to Mark Rogers a few years back and he was consistently challenging for the lead in the heats, and was simply thwarted by mechanical failures each time.
  2. I still don't get what the push is in Vintage for the 21.5? With a Li-Po and ESC the cars are nearly as fast as they used to be with early stockies. I don't I've ever heard of someone complaining about the maintenance required on a kit silver can, so that can't be it. To be honest, in the Sydney scene most of the guys that have wanted to have an alternative to the silver can didn't actually turn up to race The club did eventually move to a hand out Johnson motor and I was one of the folks that wasn't happy about it. I normally bring 15 plus cars to a meet and want to run most of them, so it was a big hit for me. But when we lined up one of the 4 slot silver cans against a hand-out there was a massive difference, I think that at $15 a motor, the pain has been worth it. We now have really close, clean racing with plenty of dicing. Interestingly, in something like the Plastic class, where there are very few gearing options and you're limited to the factory gearing options, we've never had the same chassis dominate 2 years running. The car to beat last year were Strikers! (still amazed the drive train held up for 6 races) Mod has also died a death, there were only a few guys that wanted to run their old girls that hard and most of those guys seem quite content with the speed out of the sports tuned in the Classic class (until they melt the brushes off )
  3. Sorry Willy, I've been doing the Casso vintage rules for so long I just assumed that everyone would pretty much run silver cans, which in most cases would just leave you a choice of 4WD or 2WD (maybe plastic fantastic). I agree that a dedicated event would be ideal, as inter-staters like me would be far more tempted by a full day or 2 of vintage, but I was just floating ideas to build on. Its been a while since i hit an regular RC meet and also hadn't factored in the number of classes that are currently popular, Last club series I was part of, we struggled for numbers. Regarding the competitiveness of various chassis, well, that's part of the beauty of vintage. Its about getting the old girls out there more than it is about the plastic trophy.
  4. Hi Gents, I just finished packing for the Castle Hill Vintage enduro next weekend. I think when it comes to vintage running, its a case of "if you build it, they will come".I'm Canberra based, so basically, I have to travel if I want to play with my vintage runners. We have a local ACT track and its awesome for gassers, but Boomerangs aren't design to come down from that sort of altitude. In my experience over the last few years turning up for mainly Sydney based events, there's always been plenty of Victorians who have been keen. As Willy mentioned, the vintage scene in Australia pretty much got its start in Melbourne down at Knox. Has anyone approached one of the local clubs and asked if they'd be OK with 1 or 2 vintage heats during a club day? Most clubs are pretty accommodating as long as you can get 3 or 4 cars to make up a heat. What I've seen in the past is that given a little bit of notice, there always seems to be a couple of regulars that jump at the chance to run something from the glory days. If you get some one of the clubs interested in running, I think you'd be surprised how many people would be happy to drive a decent distance to have a run. After that, its just a case of getting the word around.
  5. There's a few hobby shops in NSW that actually *get* collectors when it comes to re-re's and NIB, I'm lucky there's one in my home town. But I feel your pain when it comes to these schmucks that just take a perfectly serviceable box an mark it up.I got this one last year. With the Aussie dollar nose diving against the US$ I found the local shops have been quite competitively priced (I have no idea why), so don't give up on them, just look around your area and see if you can find a shop worth your business.
  6. That's actually good to know. I'll be racing my scorpion at this year's vintage festival in Sydney. Last time I ran the scorpion the fronts were way too hard. Looks like I'll have to make sure i pay the Tomahawk off before the last weekend in September so I can get at those medium compound fronts! :-)
  7. Thanks gents, Looks like the vote is pretty evenly split. Blood red or arterial red. I wound up layering colours to get the Scorpion yellow correct, so I think Raman's suggestion is the go. Thanks for mentioning that they addressed the binding issues, my Scorpion build was great fun, right up until I spent just as long again, dicking around trying to sort out suspension issues.
  8. Hi all. I've got my Tomahawk sitting at my LHS (AU$379) on lay-by and I'm starting to plan out the build. I was just wondering if anyone who's already done a box art build had any ideas on what shade of red I should be using? Tamiya have the PS-2 red and PS-34 bright red. I was thinking it should be PS-34 as the PS-2 looks to be a bit dark. Any ideas/opinions?
  9. I've been running frog uni's in my original wild one for around 4 years. They're overkill, but they do fit. With the oblong travel stops on the rear trailing arms (like the ones that came with the FAV re-re), the out drives don't tend to eat themselves anywhere as badly as the orignal trailing arms that had extra droop. You can also fit the F103 carbon stub axles to the front if you want to go completely stoopid.
  10. Hey Humbug, make your way over to http://www.rctech.net/forum/australian-racing/618132-vintage-racing-2012-nsw-general-discussion-events-12.html and check out the last couple of pages. Photo's and video and stuff for you to enjoy. Cheers
  11. Hi TCers, If you haven't got your entries in, I'd hurry up. You won't regret it. Good cars, good people, good fun
  12. Its sooo hard to get good help these days! Mad Racer Mark brought a Terra Conqueror down last year. Apart from being stoopidly fast, I think that it was accepted as a Classic 4wd mod. TBH, a well tuned TA01 based buggy should have nothing to fear running with the classics in the right hands. Putting my Poly-Anna test across it, running a DF01, you'd have the best of both worlds. Run it without many mods and you have a pretty bullet proof vintage, or mod the **** out of it and have a blast in classic 4wd class. (whoops, I took too long to type my reply and the conversation moved on - that'll teach me!)
  13. Fair call Mark. The way Mr T re-releases and re-hashes chassis, it does make it a bit dicey making a distinction. When Retro and others drew up the lists, they just had to draw a line somewhere. Dec 1990 was it. TBH, I don't think anyone has even discussed the DF-0 series of cars. I can understand the Firedragon/Thudershot chassis being called out as different to the hot shots. There's barely a common component. So does this mean you're thinking about making the trek? It'd be great to meet you after so many years. Cheers, Dean

Category Batteries: Hard case Li-Po only - no exceptions. 7.4 v nominal voltage maximum. Sub-C cells. 7.2 v nominal voltage maximum ALL CARS MUST RUN AN ANTENNA TUBE TO ALLOW THE FIXING OF COLOURED FLAGS - just like the good old days!! Now for some class specific guidelines: Eligible Truck entries: This year we are hoping to finally get the truck class off the ground. To do this we are keeping it VERY simple. ANY truck released before December 1996 is eligible to run. The motor for the truck class is open so do what you please. For future events, given enough interest we will split the truck class into Vintage and Classic however to get the numbers happening it is combined for this meeting. Eligible cars for the PIPE FRAME only class are: Mugen Bulldog AYK Viper Kyosho Gallop Kyosho Javelin Hirobo Zerda The Pipe frame class is strictly 4wd and limited to the above cars only. The motor for this class is the Mabuchi/Johnson RS540. (Same as the stock class). Period modifications are acceptable, however bolting a pipe frame body onto a more modern car does not constitute a Pipe Frame class car. ALL cars must retain a strong resemblance to the original buggy. Eligible cars for the HOTSHOT Class are: Hot Shot Boomerang Super Shot Big Wig Hot Shot II Super Sabre The eligible buggies for the Hot Shot class are limited to the above mentioned buggies only. The motor for this class is the Mabuchi/Johnson RS540. (Same as the stock class). Period modifications are acceptable, as is the interchanging of parts between these cars. RE-RELEASED buggies are entirely acceptable in this class. ALL cars must retain a strong resemblance to the original buggy where possible. Eligible cars for Plastic Fantastic Class: The list is long so I will dumb it down to the following description as you all pretty much know by now what we have in this class. Any car that was released with fixed camber front and rear. Solid axle buggies like the Hornet and Grasshopper are also included in the class. Basically this class is for all the entry level buggies of the VINTAGE period. Modifications are acceptable; however buggies that have been modified to have adjustable camber will not be allowed to enter. The motor for this class is the Mabuchi/Johnson RS540. (Same as the stock class). GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR VINTAGE AND CLASSIC: We now have a VERY clear cut off date for buggies. With this in mind, we will be attempting to ensure that Vintage category buggies are not being unfairly pitted against Classic buggies. Whilst we will never turn anyone away – there is clearly a point that we have to turn buggies away from the Vintage category and onto the Classic category. Here is an example: Lazer ZX is eligible for the Vintage class. However, a Lazer ZX fitted with Lazer ZX-R/ZX-S/Evolution shock towers, chassis, body and other parts is not really playing fair in the Vintage category. For this reason I would ask that competitors look at their buggy and make sure they are playing in the spirit of the category. Period hop ups are fine however fitting late model parts to an older car and calling it an older car isn't really fair. Likewise fitting an original Viper Gold Pan RC10 shell to a B4.1 does not make it Vintage or Classic!! Please look at the attached word documents for a comprehensive list of what cars fit into what category. The fitting of later model shocks, Wheels and tyres and other small parts are acceptable as sometimes they are simply impossible to find and or maintain. We need to keep the cost of racing a vintage buggy reasonable and I am certainly not going to make it harder for anyone to come and have a go. If a buggy is clearly more Classic than it is Vintage we will be requesting that the participant move their entry to the Classic category. Everyone deserves a fair go. Don't take this stance as being hard core at all, just want everyone to be on a relatively level playing field. We will look at individual buggy cases should the need arise, as there are too many possibilities for just one document. Just remember that this is meant to be simple and enjoyable and we are racing old cars the sheep stations disappeared a long time ago!! DRIVING STANDARDS AND ETIQUETTE: Some people will be well versed on what is expected at a race meeting and others not – here is what I expect from people attending Vintage events in NSW that I organise in conjunction with the clubs: HAVE FUN NO SWEARING AT THE MARSHALS they didn't crash your car you did!! Its ok to talk loudly to attract their attention (they are probably fixated on the cool vintage buggies) but don't swear or be aggressive towards them. Remember you are a marshall too or will be!! HAVE FUN If a faster car is coming up to lap you just move slightly off line - or let them know that you are letting them through. This avoids damage to our precious vintage buggies and allows you, as the slower driver, to learn the lines of the faster driver. Crashing, and taking both of you out, only slows the both of you down - easier to just be courteous. HAVE FUN Be ready for your race, the sooner you are ready the sooner we can start giving more free time for everyone! HAVE FUN Please don't be aggressive with your driving or other competitors. Erratic driving and or deliberate hacking will result in you being asked to leave the track for that race. HAVE FUN Did I mention have fun?? Other generalities for this meeting: Due to the overwhelming success of free runs at previous events, we will be running expression sessions During the running of the event, at the end of EVERY ROUND of heats, we will be having approximately 10 to 15 minutes (depending on race schedule) of expression session time. Some of the titles for these events are: "Chainsaw Massacre" All Chain driven buggies 2 or 4wd. "Heavy Metal" All Monster truck and or Wild Willy style buggies "Insect Cup" All buggies named after an insect!! Pretty self explanatory! "Beach-combers" All beach buggy/Sand Rail style buggies preferably scale looking. "Drag Queen" Potential special event at the end of the cay where the fastest time will be recorded over a set distance. The winner will receive a prize. Open to all cars. We will be having approximately 5 minutes between each race as there are lots of us running multiple classes. If we can push that along and do it faster we will as it will only add more time for expression sessions and the BBQ at the end of the day. On Sunday evening we will present the trophies for Concourse. Concourse will consist of ENTRANTS CHOICE ONLY. This means that no single person will be picking the winners. A sheet will be required to be filled out with the concourse entrants name and car type listed. The winner of concourse will be the car with the MOST votes. There will be TWO categories for Concourse: 1) "Best Racer" - the best looking car that has actually run and raced over the weekend in at least one entire race - a "parade lap" does not count as a runner. 2) "Shelf Queen" - the best buggy that has been built for display only. It goes without saying that the cars must be eligible to fit in one of the two categories we have – VINTAGE and CLASSIC. That means that the cars considered eligible for concourse must have been released before December 1996. ******PLEASE NOTE: IF we have less than 5 entries for any given class 2 weeks before the event, we will have to cancel that class******* I really hope that you can all understand the guidelines and more importantly see just how simple I am trying to make these meetings to enjoy yourself. More details on the specific timings of races and their finer details will come in following posts. No doubt you will have questions, so please fire away. This is surely going to be the biggest vintage meeting ever held in Australia, please come along and be part of the VENOM INTERNATIONAL CASTLE HILL VINTAGE BUGGY FESTIVAL. ELECTRONIC on-line entries will be opened up soon via the Castle Hill Clubs on line facility. http://www.alycat.com/AlycatRC/WebSi...riesSetup.html
  15. I suppose I could argue that the FAV has unchanged decals (plus extras), but you're right, sponsors decals would have to change. Fortunately there are sources for the original sponsors stickers. What a re-re would give me access to new shells and the colour stripe decals in the correct colours.
