-
sadly I know what you mean!!
-
Yeah I'll take some this weekend, are you interested?
-
Only 3 years old. Bought at the peak, selling at the trough. Wise man that I am.

OK, I never built it. Sooooooo. A NIB complete Sand scorcher kit will be going on ebay in a few days time. Happy bidding!!

Prices are getting crazy these days...
twoscoops replied to Big Al's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
I would guess that this is the case because a lot of sorchers are probably being snapped up by people like myself. 1) Perhaps weren't rich enough to have one when they were first released 2) Around the sort of age, (had kids, career established, having early mid life crisis) to have a bit of surplus. 3) SS's come from a different age, arguably when something was built to a quality not a price point. 4) SRB's would not be economically viable today in a throw away culture. Kids these days are too thick to appreciate them. (OK, that one is a little contentious!!) -
Do you know if there was ever an official tamiya sand scorcher rear diff hop up part? BTW, many thanks for the responses.
-
OK, I bought the runner, have sourced most of the bust / missing internals. I would like if possible to add some hop up's I've already got steel bearings instead of the original brass bushes. I really like some advice on, the motors. I seen some conflicting advice on the black sport tuned motor, can this be fitted without modification. Secondly, the big one, I'd like, as I'm sure we all would to fit a diff on the back. I know that these are as rare as rocking horse odure, but if anyone can supply me with a part number / photo I'd be very grateful, and I can hang around ebay looking for one. TIA Also, can I get repro body parts (lights, wipers, mirrors, door handles) from somewhere, obviously these parts are the ones that are the most easily destroyed, so sourcing originals is prohibitively expensive. Thanks again.

The bodyshell is enjoying a long bath in that most disgusting product called brake fluid. It stinks, and is so slimy, errrrr!! not enjoying this bit of the restoriation. I intend to leave it in is bath for about 3 - 4 days, hopefully all the awful paint jobs its had over the year will simply melt off. Hey ho, off to try to find all the bits that are missing and damaged. You lot never told me when they say "runner" that statement varies from olympic athlete to emphasymic asthmatic coffin dodger!! Mines reasonable, but not currently great, still it's all good clean (?) fun. Thanks for all your replies, great site.

Got the tools out to strip my "runner". I am lucky, it has hop up bearings. I am also unlucky, the vintage shell, apart from the obvious knocks and missing bits, has been sprayed in automotive paint. What is the best way to remove it ? Have tried Soap and water, predicably useless, T-Cut, very slow. Petrol, dangerous Gunk, as above. Oven cleaner, useless. Wire wool, slow and damaging. Nail Varnish remover. What now? Brake fluid.? Suggestions appreciated.

At least I was right in one respect. I am getting more confused. I'll do a bit more research and not bother you again until perhaps I have some sensible questions to ask! In the meantime, thanks again for your responses.

A diff, I'm sure you're correct, but a diff / gears? separate components??. Could you clarify ?? Also, the difference between a Black sport tuned motor and a technigold. I know, I'm on a steep learning curve here. Thanks for your patience.

I think I might be getting a bit hooked here, Tamiya black motor ?? What's that, sounds intriguing. For the runner, I am thinking about possibly upgrading the following. The motor and gears (are metal ones available) The suspension and runnig gear. Possibly the control gear, not sure if I am that bothered about that, although I probably should be. However, one thing that is not negotiable for me at any rate, is that the outward apperance should be "boxart" Thanks, again for all your kind advice, I'm looking forward to getting stuck in. Bit additive all this RC stuff!!

Hi, yes as said, bought a runner now, will do a damned good restore on it. I still may build the NIB though.
-
Ok, Bought a ready built (awfully painted) complete runner, will keep the NIB, sell it on eventually, make a million, sail round the world etc etc. What is the blue colour on the box artwork? Is it French Blue? I want to restore and repaint the bodyshell and put new decals on.
-
I have a NIB sand scorcher, "cackles with demonic laughter" I may be selling it soon, 'cos I think what I really want is a runner, and perhaps a NIB is not the best place to start, these guy's have put me in a quandry, I'm on holiday next week so I'll think about it. But to answer the question, I think yes it has to be the scorcher.

Originality, and it's poor cousins....
twoscoops replied to Hibernaculum's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
It's a very interesting, if subjective debate. Take the Sand scorcher, for me this was my childhood dream of an RC, personally I wouldn't dream of giving a scorcher anything but a totally original paint job. Under the "bonnet" (hood for my transatlantic friends) I wouldn't have too much problem changing the original plastic gears, putting in a better motor, uprating the shocks etc, but the outside, no for me that's out of bounds. I don't know if any of you watch the American Hotrod series. OK, I know it's a little hammed up for TV, but I love watching the detailing, and effort that goes in to the hotrods, but I'm afraid to say for me, the end product, is almost always truly hideous. I guess it comes down to taste, there's no such thing as good or bad taste, if you like it and your comfortable with it, and it doesn't harm anyone else, then no one has the right to tell you otherwise. Just my take, Oh, one last question, are those hotrods road legal in the US, 'cos they most of 'em certainly wouldn't be allowed on british roads. -
A few things spring to mind for me. Buying and building the NIB scorcher and running it would be like fulfilling a dream I had as a 12 year old kid, I really really wanted a scorcher, but even at that young age, I knew my parents were making sacrifices to send me to a decent school. I get the part about hugely depreciating the value, but I'm not really in it for the money. I also undertand about getting a Runner, but all the ones I've seen so far are either missing subtantial bits, are broken, or have had some of the worst paint jobs (both in terms of quality and colour) I've ever seen. I dunno, you've now all confused me, maybe I'll renovate a runner and sell the NIB, or maybe not. As I'm on holiday next week I'll decide then. (no breaking into my house and stealing it while I'm away!)
-
Yeah, stuff the money, you only live once. I'm gonna build it. Same philosophy as owing a ferrari, the one that I came to sell would have 80k on the clock and have had the nuts trashed off it. All those ads you see, cherished bottle fed 10 year old ferrari, housed in air con'ed garage, only 6 miles on the clock!! What a waste !! If you can't afford it don't buy it, if you can, use it is what I say. God knows when that bus is gonna knock you down, wish me luck I'm goin' in !! Sorry about the price rise in NIB scorchers BTW! Was it cheap..... depends on what you call cheap, but I think the short answer would be no!
-
all? the other NIB's ??
-
you will need a full radio set with the transmitter, reciever, and servos. Mya divice is to not mess with this NIB kit. these are worth $2000+ there are plenty of lesser expensive kits you can cut your R/C teeth in on. Yeah, I know, but it's bonus time !! So it's sooooo tempting, but as you say, these babies can go for a lot of money. Thing is with the scorcher, it's a kind of childhood dream for me, "all" my school mates had one, but my parents couldn't afford one, I didn't even badger them, 'cos I knew they couldn't afford it. As for messing it up, I wouldn't dare, I've even researched the paint, but the bit of the jigsaw I'm really not sure about if I do decide to build it, is where to source the control gear. Is Ebay a good place, I'd imagine used servos could well be knackered, as for the battery, the link above looks promising, does anyone know if you can drop this battery pack into an original scorcher battery housing ? What about receivers, original or modern equivalent? same for transmitters? BTW, Thanks for all the advice so far, appreciated. One last thing, can anyone suggest a good lace to look for scorcher hop ups? Day one, and twoscoops is already annoying everyone !!
-
So, if I am getting this right all I need is a 7.2V hump configuration battery pack, and a RC transmitter (bit with the levers on it that you hold!!) . No need for a receiver, servo's etc, surely not ??
-
All fair points, but apart from whether or not it's an investment (dubious) what do I need? 7.2V hump back battery, I can't imagine an original will be any good now? Can you get for instance NiMh or Li Ion equivalents? Trasmitter, receiver, servo's, charger anything else? Sorry for all the q's I am new to this. TIA
-
Yeah, you're probably right, I don't think I ever will build it, 'cos it's worth so much more in it's box, shame really. My thoughts were though If I could get all the RC gear together with the scorcher, then maybe it'd be worth more? I dunno, half of me is tempted to say sod it, build it, similar to owning but never driving a ferrari, a total waste IMHO, or keeping it a few years, and using it as an investment. Decisions decisions!! Back to the original questions, do you know what part numbers I'd need to look out for? What about servos, receivers etc? TIA. scoops.
