  1. Great, thanks for the info Willy. [Y] You should see the gape'ing looks I am recieving at the local hobby shops here with this car [] I have actually had howls of laughter going on about the chain drive, and the I bumped into the very guy I bought this car to try and beat (my fantasy of 4wd making up for 13years of design advancement and lesser driving skills hahaha!), the local national and international 1/10 champ and HPI Euro driver. He didn't seem too worried! [] [] But what was cool was he was really interested in the car and we had a long discussion in the store. He is racing a 24hour electric race this weekend, 35 batteries to cycle thu!! [] I will go and watch and try to get some photos to post up. One team is running a tamiya car. I will post up how I go with this car, the Dynastorm, and possibly the 956 if I can get enough bearings and electrics sorted, for the upcoming nostalgia and buggy class races on Saturday the 10th. [] [au]
  2. [<)] first thing I thought on see seeing the photo in your post was ...mmm, cannonball run! [] Looks cool, inspite of the **** running knowlegde! Shodog, I am wondering about the aerial wrapping - does it work just as well as on a stand up tube or metal aerial? I am about to run my 956 at a nostalgia race meet in 2 weeks, and it'd be great not to have an antenna sticking out. Is the reception and distance still good like this? The race is in a large indoor gymnasium (not so cheap futaba AM radio set). Thanks! And keep trying with the old ones. I believe it just depends on where and with who you run them! [] [au]
  3. Selling?? I GAVE IT ALL AWAY when I was 18 and moved out. [] [:'(] [:$] [:$] [st] Modified winning Super Astute JPS Road Wizard King Cab - raced it too! Clod buster Fox Kyosho Gallop MKII And my first ever car, FAV. [:$] [:$] [:$] Not so much the cost - if another kid had fun with it then great, but I'd love to see the Super A, JPS and the FAV again.
  4. Thanks Backlash. Captain cheap here is hoping not to have to fork out for a new servo, as the car cost so much and I bought a lipo recently which requires a new charger and a new esc... [] [:S] [:'(] So I am looking fwd to all that and if this servo works it's going to do it's job! [] [] Cheers! [au]
  5. I am about to race an original Kyosho Fantom 4wd pan car in March. It came with this 1980s mirco size servo, it is very small and has a SQUARE shaped head to attach the servo saver on. never seen one like that before! and I want to know if I can simply cut the odd shape plug it has and fit on a modern Futaba plug and use it with a modern Futaba 2PL radio set and esc ? Pls have a look and let me know if think/know it will work! [8-|] [8-|] [] http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...9&sid=16759 Thanks! Full race report & photos will be posted in the vintage section in March. Will be racing TWO Dynastorms also!! I got a second car to entice a friend into racing vintage Tamiya's! [] [au]
  6. From your description it is unclear if yours are new built or used rebuilt ones. Have you tried (tedious I know) rebuilding them several times? Somes they just need a lot of playing with to free up and work well. Lossi mini shocks work OK (they have white springs usu) I use them for rear springs on mine, but the whole damper can be made to fit. At the rear, a suitable spacer and longer bolts to mount work with minimal effort. For the front a whole new mount needs to be machined. I have played with this often, but to be honest it never works out and besides, the attraction of the 959 is how small all the bits are anyway! My solution was to get much harder springs out of a quick drive type car and squeeze them onto the standard shocks. It is a pain to do but works well, and it is very difficult for people to spot the difference. Thicker damper oil might help slow the leaks, but if rebuilding them several times doesn't help you, I would suggest hunting ebay and TC wanted/sales for spares to try. Don't get sucked into the rarity hype - there are loads of parts out there. Enjoy and post up picts! [] [au]
  7. [Y] [] Exactly! Simple rules, good spirit. In the Hungarian series it is like bakaguyjean has in Japan, basically unlimited; we only state 7.2v, 21 turn and 1:10 or 1:12. And at organisers discretion -eg. I have run with a 19turn dynatech on the basis that at more than 13 years old it can't seriously be considered at threat to modern 21 turns. It's all about just going out and having fun! Cool to hear how it's beeing done around the world! [] [au]
  8. This is one of the race classes I run in in Hungary. It is called the "Nostalgia Series". I am not sure of the cut off date exactly, but it is mid nineties. Will check and let you know. Basically anything goes, but motor limit is 21 turn. 7.2v battery max. It is run on an indoor, flat carpet track. We get alot of F1s, Le Mans type cars and the odd Porsche 959 [] [] I have varyingly run my Can Am Lola, Le Mans chassis (Daytona Thunder), and the 959. The series is Tamiya based but special cars that are non Tamiya are allowed at the organisers discretion. Eg. I will be running the original Kyosho Fanton EP4wd car at the March race. Focus is purely on fun. But the times of the top nostalgia cars are always in the top 10 of the overall day - including the super touring and tuning classes! It is COOL to see these old cars whipping butt! [] [] [] Good luck, and enjoy! [au] PS. We get 85 - 150 racers at each race day (It's crowded!) and of that 20 odd are in the Nostalgia Series.
  9. Thanks for posting up the picts. A very nicely built car. Very bling! [D] I hope you decide to run it and enjoy it. It really is alot of fun to race against other cars knowing yours is rather special. Whatever you decide, I hoep it brings you big smiles and plenty of enjoyment! By the way, would you mind advising what are the white rear springs you show in the photos? [] [au]
  10. If I was there, then I would make the trek from Sydney! Come on folks! As you know from my vintage racing posts I currently work in Europe. Otherwise I would join you. I have been back in Syd for the past month for medical reasons, but don't have my cars with me. sob! [:'(] I did check out the offroad track at the Showground, Mona Vale, last friday night. But no one was there. [:$] Support TC meets and get together! Good luck and have fun! []
  11. Sacrilege! [] [] [] Race the vintage cars! [] Depends on why you race. Just for being up front? Ok, DF-03 or 501. 2wd purist? Satisfaction of beating 4wd with 2wd AND an older car? [] Cheaper to run in the event of an accident/breakage? [Tho personally I don't buy into that- DS parts are still cheaply avail.] Wise man in mountain cave once say, "Let your heart lead you" [] etc etc. Would you mind posting up a photo of your TRF DS? I see you don't have a showroom entry of it. Do keep us informed of what you do!
  12. [Y] [] Group hug sorta thing! Or as we'd say in Oz, "'on ya, maate!" [] [] I think you hit the nail on the head, I was waiting for that! I wasn't really sure what my "problem" was so I started up this thread to get some opinions in on which i can look upon. I think I can't take the heat any more so I get out of the kitchen. Now that moderations are a good thing, I was mislead (by myself) and found out that there is a diffenrence between a personal opinion and a personal opinion made by a moderator. Sometimes it's hard to explain my ideas and use the correct thermology to tell what I'm doing or thinking. It's frustrating when people don't understand that, I have to work on that. Indeed, when you are in front, you will get more heat and it's even more difficult to admit when you are wrong (I'm sure you know what I mean). .... Dee. Literally I know exactly what you mean - many years ago in my first Formula Opel race I somehow managed to get the car on pole position, and I totally blew the advantage by dumping the clutch to early and wasted the chance to keep in front. It was sooooo difficult not to come up with some blame the car excuse afterwards! [] [] [au] Looking forward to more mind boggling modeling activities of yours here on TC! [Y] []
  13. Dee - you are a leader in this domain. Time out is cool. In most situations time out produces new energy and a slightly different mentality upon retun to play. A leader taking a backseat usually gets bored/frustrated after a period, and finds high community enthusiasm for their return to their natural place in that community/domain. I hope you come back soon! It would suck if you took up cake decorating or started a kyosho site!! [] [] There are always going to be one or two unpleasants in a community of TCs size. Ride it out! [] [Y]
  14. Don't worry, they last AGES! Unless you run the car sideways ( [] easy to do!) for an hour every day for 3 months straight on very rough tarmac, I can't see them wearing out out much quicker than that. For reference I have eventually seen them wear out, ie. thinning down, to holes appearing in the edges of the tires. But I have only seen that once. However if you start using grip goo or paint on them then the life time will be significantly shortened as that makes them even softer. The mini wheels and tires fit OK, and the Avante hubs are ideal. But at the end of the day, the tires are available on ebay/trading and unless it's your only car or you race it week in week out I wouldn't worry about it. Find another person to 'race' with and go out and have a blast! Moving the rear shock position helps tame it alot. Enjoy! [] [au] [au]
  15. [] [au] Thanks for all the kind words. Let tell you when you get really sick and and are suddenly dependant on specialists and other peoples goodwill it makes you realise how important medical insurance and friends are. If you have friends in hospital, surprise night visits are the most appreicated!! Hoping everything improves, I hope to be in Singapore on the 8thof Feb, picking up some LiPo's specially made to fit the Can Am [H], and ones for the Dyna Storm too. I only found out recently that all the top spec LiPo's are actually manufactured in Singapore. It is the lower end mass product stuff that is in Korea. Vintage Tamiya on the road again even faster!! [] [au] [au] Stay healthy and keep up your medical insurance!
  16. TC spirit never fails to amaze me! During the past months I have been hospitalised and am going thru some pretty horrible medical tests and certain TC members have made the time happier by suprise offers of sending me some vintage parts for free! [] , or very cheaply [] It's blown me away and I'd just like to say a big thanks! bakaguyjean fastpietje I should be back vintage racing in March and will post up the story and picts! [au] []
  17. The re-re motor doesn't have ball bearings, also might have other differences. Cheers Really! Cheap bluggers! I didn't know that. It really shocks me hearing this about 'perfomance' motors. 15 years ago this wouldn't have happened. The Orion motor I swapped to race with also came without bearings. I only found out at the track, and a mate offer to put some new spares in he had for me. For free which was cool. But I was really shocked. That is **** cheapskateness from manufacturers. I could not cost more than 1 euro o2 max on the price of the motor, which I would happily pay not to have to pull the motor apart directly after buying it. Thanks for the good info Theo! [au]
  18. I have raced without spares all this year! It's tempting fate to carry spares! hahaha!
  19. [au] No question the asso is a better car. Tamyia has never made really top end cars, the 501 is a step in the right direction tho. Just go an have fun with what you've got is my motto, unless everyone is very good at your race series it's unlikely you'd be last and bored/frustrated with the DS. BTW, 'point and shoot' is what kills 4wd for me - theoretically. I am always tempted by a 4wd - like your egress! - but I enjoy trying to beat 4wds with my 2wd. Re the collars, yes a measuring device is usu required. Experienced people have calipers. I have a 15cm school ruler and my eyes.... [] [] [] I am just out to have fun. Measuring calipers make a good idea for a Christmas present now that it is mentioned tho!! [] It's just my feeling, and collars may work fine for you. They just seem like a **** way to the accomplish the task to me, and they do drop out sometimes. I have picked them off tracks myself. Find ot what works best for you. Above all, get out and have fun! []
  20. It will be fine. Remember the stock pink motor it came with is extremely fast - 14 turn. [au]
  21. "Can you not text/e-mail the picture to your e-mail account? " Unfortunetely not, my account dosnt have that option ticked. Someone will have a cable over Christmas I am sure! []
  22. There are plenty on ebay. In response to another thread I made up a driver for my Dynastorm 3 weekends ago. I had to use a FOX driver as it was the only one that would fit in the small space available. it FITS! and it looks cool! [] [] I promised to post up picts but they are still stuck on my phone camera - I have no cable and no infra red on it - but I will get the picts up eventually! PS. I had alot of fun painting up the driver. First time I had used brushes in years! It's a really enjoyable way to spend a while on a Sunday afternoon! [au]
  23. Go the O2H! It's a grat motor. Cooling fins before they were even in vogue! I use the 01R and it's a great motor, but i still lust for the 02 so that sort of sums it up I think! However at the end of the day if you ever want to race, one uses what will conform to race regs that you run in. Running these older motors does have the benefit that sometimes the others are laughing so hard at the thought of you racing with a 13 or more year older motor that they let you run it, regardless of how many turns it is.... [] [H]
  24. It's even more fun if you are the only Tamiya there I feel! Fly the flag and have a great time! [] [] No, they are a poor backward step of Tamiya. [] The older grey "Hop Up" shocks at least had an adjustable collar (small philips head screw). See them on any Egress. Slip on collars are joke for buggy racing - [*]Buggy shocks are exposed (unlike in touring cars) and contact happens frequently. Thus collars can and do come off during races. [*]With stiffer springs the collars frequently bulge, esp if two are used, and slip off or the spring slips under the lower collar [*]Adjustables are much more dependable as they are made of metal and offer tiny amounts of adjustablility. Yes the alu is good qality [] and the internals are very friction minimising, [Y] but they should have had a thread on the outside from day one. The newer tamiya ones do. [H] Also I have had two incidents of the shock exploding because the lower cap/hole where the pistons enteres the damper unscrewed during racing. Once was excusable, twice means the bin. I dont want to waste my precious 7/5 min track times on shock failures. I love Tamiya but the older grey shocks, and the newer threaded ones are both much better! [au]
  25. Hi Toby, good choice! [] [] Do a search on the vintage forum for my Dyna Storm races again threads - there are 3 - and that should help you out. Not alot to do except get out and develop your driving and have a blast! [Y] [au] 1. Ditch the shocks for some adjustables, cheap are fine! just get the adjustable kind. 2. Swap the rear tires for whats suitable. On carpet go for mini pine spikes. I use the standard fronts and despite the laughs they do fine. 3. Set rear slightly hard, and front full soft. 4. You can play with damper oil types, slipper and diff settings as you get more time on track. 5. Thread lock the front damper stay base bolts, the rear chassis to arms hinge screws (all four), and I have to also TL the rear wheel bolts on twisty track layouts. Check all screws are still firmly on after each heat/race! Personally I just adjust the shocks, stiffened the diff and I am off! and out there having a blast. Buggy races are great becuase alot of it is just avoiding the crashes! The main thing though is driving style - brakes, no brakes, blipping or full throttle etc. Find your style. Enjoy and post up picts and how you go! [Y] [au]
