Champ restyle project - early stages
cherrybomb replied to KEV THE REV's topic in General discussions
That's brilliant, I love it![H] Can't wait to see her finished. How about some detail shots of the rear cage / suspension mounts......so I can nick your idea![] Only kidding, but I'd be interested to see some close ups of the chassis mods. Chris. -
New Kamtec Baja body!!! What...(prototype)

[H]Nice one. Colours look good against the gold pan. -
I might stick with the 3racing Dark Impact shocks for the time being. They're about the right size and work well AND I've got another 2 sets coming from the states.[] I might even have a bash at making up some remote reservoirs for the rears and a piggyback top cap for the fronts.[H]

Don't get too excited........ Not even I can work miracles and scale up a scorcher to fit these![]
-
Nope. 68mm. I really have no idea where they get 110mm from. I can't find anything that measures that on the shocks?[:^)]
-
Hummm....[:S] Shocks arrived this morning. I think they may under estimate the length!! The come out closer to 125mm than 110mm.[:|] They are HUGE!! Oh well, back to the drawing board. I'll just have to build a 1/8 rock crawler now to fit these to cos they are very sexy even if they are way too big for a scorcher.

An idea I am toying with..........

Just done a bit of quick sketching in AutoCAD and allowing for 30mm of travel (which believe it or not is 5mm more than stock!) The change in axle length is just under 2.3mm If I went for 40mm of travel it's 4mm, so with a bit of tinkering it should be reasonably easy to acount for the change in length. -

The current idea is to use Modified Brat / Frog driveshafts, but I'll need to have a play around. The alternative for a simple 'scale' design is to use standard scorcher driveshafts and build some flex into the trailing arms just like the real thing, but that won't solve the camber problem. -

I'd thought of the frog way of doing it, but decided it wasn't 'metal' enough.[] Anyway, i've been having a think, and taken on board peoples ideas and decided to simplify things a little for a first attempt, so here's the first doodlings for a swing arm rear using the original gearbox.... The green recangle is the front of the gearbox where it bolts to the chassis plate. My idea is that the conversion would sandwich between the two. I've still got a long way to go but what do you think so far?? -
Mine too......RACE YA!!!![]

Shodog. I know exactly where you're coming from and agree with it all. I love the SRBs and an original is an original. I also like making stuff that makes them more practical as a (how do I word thsi) 'retro' modern runner. There's something about the scale engineering that just makes them lovable. In my dark and distant past i got into VWs big style and I'm sure owning a Scorcher as a kid had a lot to do with it. now I run a modified Jeep which is always being 'tinkered' with. I guess I've never really been 100% happy with the original rear end design, Tamiya made such a good job of the front and then kind of went off the boil at the back and I'm itching to have a go. Reckon I'll just go for it and see what people think. -

Fair questions. I have the limited facility to prototype parts, but the bits I sell are farmed out to a number of engineering workshops. The unit costs for having parts made is not high because of the quantities involved...and that's the point really, quantity. The main barrier I have at the moment is finding a supplier who can produce CNC components in limited runs for a cost effective price. I don't really make a great deal of profit on the stuff I sell, well not that goes in my pocket anyway. Any money that is made goes to finance more production and developing new stuff. I started making this stuff for me because I enjoy doing it, but I guessed that if I needed the stuff then other people could benefit from it too, so that's how it all started. Now that the stuff I do make and sell is starting to pay for itself I can afford to start looking at more involved designs, but like i say before I go ahead and get X number of components made I need to test the water and see if there is interest in the bits. I could make a trailing arm kit for me just by getting stuff machined as one offs, I guess I wanted to know if anyone else would be interested enough for me to risk the investment in having a run of parts made. As for the price people would be happy to pay, that kind of ties in with what I've said already, if ten people would pay 'Y' or 2 people wold pay 5x'Y' both could make it worth while. Hope that all makes sense. Chris. -
Great minds mate, great minds...[] I've also been toying with designs for replacement front trailing arms, but still haven't come anywhere near having a design I'm happy with.

OK, here's the deal. I have been pondering this for a while now and I'd just love to have a go at sorting it but I need some feed back. For those of you who don't know I make some (very cool I have to say....so go buy some!!! AND while we're on the subject, why don't you know I make them, that's what I want to know....some people!![]) hop up parts for the SRB. Ummm...sorry about that.[:$] What was I saying?...Oh yes, I want to have a bash at making a trailing arm rear end for the SRB chassis based around a modern (so you can get them easy) RC10 Stealth gearbox. The idea behind this is to make a modern take on an old hop up. The benefits would be, much better handling (less negative camber and a diff as standard) plus it would look 'right' on a scorcher and just imagine how an SRB would shift with a 10 Double in it.....OR brushless! and have the handling and strength to take it. The plan is for these to be a 'bolt on' conversion but here's the rub; it's going to be costly to do, so I'd really need to be able to scrape back some of the costs though selling kits. Probably in a limited one off run. SO...who would be interested. I really need to know if this is a goer. EDIT: AND (sorry) it'd be good to have some kind of idea how much people would be prepared to pay for the kits if it happens so I can tell whether this is viable. Cheers, Chris.

Consider yourself well and truly put down![:|] There will be front extensions and rear mounting kits very similar to the ones on my Class 5. The only difference is they will not have the shock mounting holes drilled, so you can make them fit a range of shocks. [] ANYWAY..... Back on track, hurry up and get them shocks BJ so we can see some more pix of that cool roll cage. (I am stealing ALL your ideas BTW!)
-
Nah! Not ruining me fun.[] I have a plan............ Oh and I might have a solution for you too soon. Have a look at the chassis that's under the Class 5 in my showroom for a hint.[]
-
The man has a point. Tamiya have plenty of 'previous' for imaginative box art illustrations... What about the missing box art bumper they should have included in the scorcher kit?
-
It ain't worth the blood loss otherwise.[]

Got a reply. Try their other site: rcrock.com I've just ordered a full set.[]
-
I SO need to get me some of them![H] There is a problem with their security certificate. I reckon they are trying to use the one from the old site instead of getting it updated for the new one. I've sent them an email, so hopefully should hear back. With the exchange rate like it is, those shocks are just too tempting.
-
If they're the ones your talking about, they're for the Losi MiniT and I think you can get them from Tower Hobbies.
-
OH![:$] They're called very very cool![]
-
Are you thinking of that awful kit that UVA did in the '80's or the WW2 job which was a Type 80something?
-
Identify these parts? Don't want to throw out!
