I wouldn't worry about the missing screws, as I look on it as, lightening the car for racing [] Dr.Robotnik

Hi Joel, First of all good luck with this project. I think first of all you need a plan of action. You are about to learn a lot of skills and it won't be easy so slow and steady wins the race. A full custom car would be ideal for you I guess from what you've written, however I think its unrealistic. My advice to you would be to make an on-road pan car like Mike T said for simplicity's sake. Ideally I'd guess you should buy a donner car from ebay and look to retro-fit a new chassis. This would allow you to quickely select sheet chassis material and get an idea about simple CAD drawing and your actual access to manufacturing from your brother. After assembling your donner car on a custom chassis it'll be easier to then eye up what other modifications you could do. For a road car for a chassis I'd expect to use something like; 1.5mm to 3mm sheet, this could either be aluminium (many different types available but most will do e.g. a road sign), GRP or FRP. For an off-road chassis I'd expect to use something like; 2mm to 4mm sheet for a single deck and maybe down to 1.5mm if you add another deck. Using the same materials as above. To gain experience in what to use just see what Tamiya has used in the past. For example an SRB used thin GRP sheet and the chassis was to flexible. Hop-up companies then made chassis of about 1/8 inch or approx 3mm thick. You should look into material properties to gain an understanding of what you'd want out of your chassis material and what is available. However to make a complete custom off-road car would be a massive undertaking so if I were you I'd look at adapting all the spares or parts of your favourite cars into one homologation special on your own custom chassis. For CAD programs, I have used all these and more through work and anyone is a great starter CAD package and by that I just mean simple to use in comparison to say Catia with lots of online tutorials and support; Solid Works Pro-E Auto-CAD Thats about it I guess, but good luck, don't be put off, everyone has to start somewhere. Please post lots of pics of your progress and just focus on this project until its culmination. Cheers Dr. Robotnik P.S. Thanks to whoever posted Grahoo's showroom, check it out its got some great customs e.g. a Hornet and Dark Impact combined as one car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw this stuff on the 'web a while back through work and it looked super impressive. Its great that you are going to put it to good RC use. Oh and fantastic tensile test shot ;-) Thanks for sharing Cheers Ed

Dear Ukvintage, I completely feel your pain brother! I have just concluded a deal where the guy said he was selling NIP parts. They arrived in an envelope and well past there use by date. On emailing him he said I should have checked the pics and he never said they were NIP parts. As all he'd said was they were NIP parts and there was never any pic, I'd just taken his word for it that they were NIP, I was pretty p****'d off. He didn't reply to a lot of emails and also wouldn't offer anything in compensation until I threatened to post him in the bad sellers section. Then bam! I got a full refund and was allowed to keep the parts! However he was still having a go at me via email. So sometimes people have bad attitudes and the only way you can make them do right is a little gentle persuasion. Take it as a lesson learnt that with many people from different backgrounds confusion often arises and by adding your own assumptions into the mix that can cause further problems. However even when speaking to people from the UK and 100% double & triple checking things are what they say they are problems can still arise. I also screwed up on this board by assuming things so avoid if at all possible. I don't know if that has helped at all other than to say we are all in the same boat. Glad it ended ok in the end. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers Ed

Cheap and cheerful ready to run cars which are differentiated from regular Tamiya RC kits as they don't have a lot of removable parts and a standard radio/servo set-up. That's all I know. Maybe I'm wrong but I hate to see a thread with no comments. It looks so sad :-)

"Make me an offer" what's it all about?
Dr.Robotnik replied to FERRETTI's topic in General discussions
I totally agree with this. I am interested in some very rare parts and consequently you are lucky to see them for sale before and there is no option like search ebay completed listing which will help as the parts are so rare. So what do you do when you see a 'make me an offer' listing? Make an offer? Well I did, this one time and the guy emailed me and had a right go at me, saying I was trying to effectively rob him. Well at least he replied. lol. My step now is to offer an overly large amount, however I only do this on parts I really want, but this is what pushes the prices up. I am to blame for this but so are others, witness the MIP kits from the 'sealed city' on ebay the other week for what happens when people make lots of offers!!! **** this capitalist economy it is so hard to get your head round. Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh! [] I, now, on my listings, if I don't have a fixed price in mind write, make me an offer and also, that I won't be offended by low offers. I also reply to every email and wish others did like wise. I think its the lack of communication that is the problem. -
Chuckanut Yokomo Dog Fighter modifications
Dr.Robotnik replied to Dr.Robotnik's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Thanks to the people who've emailed me complimenting me about this car, cheers Jim and Darren. Like I side in my previous post, since those last pics were taken by Chuckanut I have added the parts that were missing. I wanted to see what it would look like completed. I have added the blue rear Yokomo RPS SE shocks, a Race Prep motor and some turn buckles to attach the front steering and hubs. Oh and at the moment as I am one shock short of a dual shock front end, it is using a set of CRP front mono GRP shock mounts instead of the Hot Trick dual shock mount which is also mounted. So here it is; With the shell on; From the side; From the back; Anyway, like I said before feel free to comment on the car for example the relative merits of the modifications e.g. the massive alloy rear arms. I am still after information about the manufacturer of the rear arms. Is it Delta? [8-|] Does anyone on here know anything about the Delta products. Anyway thanks for looking.[] Cheers Ed P.S. If anyone is after some parts for this type of car, either the, Yokomo YZ834B Dog Fighter, the RPS Yokomo SE or the Wonder Dog Fighter then get in touch as I have a ton of parts spare which could help you out. Oh I am also after parts, so lets trade! [] -
Hi guys and gals, seasons greetings and a Merry Christmas to all! [<)] I just bought a massive lot of Yokomo Dog Fighter parts from TC member chuckanut. So I'd like to thank him here for sorting me out with this lot as I was after a Dog Fighter for ages and previously missed out on some amazing deals! Cheers buddy. I bought the lot mainly for one particular Yokomo RPS SE, and this is what I'd like help on. I have sent a couple of emails to Chuckanut but thought I'd write a thread here to see if anyone out there knows anything. The car comes with substantial modifications which have been done to a very high standard. I don't know anything about these hop-up parts and was wondering if anyone could help me identify them. I don't have my own pictures (new pics thursday) but I have some that chuckanut sent me of the car which I hope he doesn't mind me using. Anyone know anything about these amazing aluminium rear trailing arms? They are absolutely amazing and are machined to an excellent finish, the detail is awesome (sorry about the pics). If this was a vintage hop-up or machined today it'd be very expensive! Another picture of the rear trailing arms. I really love them because the Yokomo was no feather weight before but now!! [:|] Up front there is also a very fancy ball bearinged black frp cantilevered chain tensioner attached to a black frp spine plate. sorry for the picture quality. But if you know the parts maybe it'll mean something to you? [8-|] Finally up front there are some nice lower Hot Trick arms. The car also has Hot trick front dual shock mount, and rear bulkhead. I am so happy [] I also got the instructions to the Delta Desert Fox (I forgot the exact name) upgrade pack and was wondering if anyone has pics of what the parts are meant to look like. If anyone wants to let me know what they think of the car or if they have any information about the modifications please let me know. The car came with no rear shocks or steering turn-buckles I have added some blue rear Yokomo shocks which I got from Barrypops ages ago and also some hop-up captured ball joint turnbuckes. Any information about the parts would be a great help ;-) Anyway hope your all well, thanks again and I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers Ed

My 1/12 Caterham Super Seven BDR build begins here :)
Dr.Robotnik replied to clarkey's topic in General discussions
Absolutely amazing. This kit would be so good with RC. Are some of the parts functional? I think you mentioned the mini rack and pinion was, but how about the diff. and suspension? Does one wheel turn and not the other, does the suspension compress? Keep up the good work. It is very frustrating not to get comments on threads but c'est la vie. I hope you won't be short on comments on this thread though as its excellent. I like to see builds of kits I'd never buy. So thanks. -Ed -
I know Jerry (pleiku68) has got a fantastic modified Super Champ with a brushless system. Check it out in his showroom on; http://tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?c...932&id=2843 I always modify my RC cars with period correct hop-ups so unfortunately due to my own strictness [8-|] I won't be getting into the brush-less arena. Thanks for sharing and a video would be much appreciated to show what I'm missing out on. [] Cheers -Ed

New Kamtec Baja body!!! What...(prototype)
Dr.Robotnik replied to Badboy's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Well done Badboy, ace looking car! Loving the final product.[:|] Thanks for sharing. Cheers Ed -
I have virtually no idea as to what is going on here or what your talking about! [] However I do know that this 'spoof render' you have created is awesome, if you squint a tiny bit or I don't know maybe just get slightly drunk it looks amazingly realistic. [8-|] Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing. - Ed

Stripping paint from Lexan with Coca Cola??????
Dr.Robotnik replied to Dr.Robotnik's topic in General discussions
Hi all, Thanks for the patience, I have been working super hard this week and hadn't had the time or inclination in the brief moments I was home to look into the bag of Coke during the week. After approximately two weeks and 4 litres of Coke, the paint has definitely thinned all over (please bear in mind this is a very strong paint as it has so far resisted, oven cleaner, nitro fuel, etc.) The major successes however have been that where the paint was previously worn and thinner from rubbing on the battery box and other areas it has been completely removed leaving clear shiny lexan! Unfortunately, the remaining paint however is still as stubbornly stuck as ever! There are no pictures however as I was loath to get the camera out with the shell dripping Coke all over the show. Also don't get excited as the success is relatively minor and at least 80% of the shell still has some paint. I am going away for xmas on Wednesday and so have added another 1.5 litres of Coke (I might add even more given enough free time) and re-sealed the stripping bag. I will return on or around the 5th of January and so please don't expect any more results before then. Thanks a lot for your continued interest and patience with me. Happy xmas Cheers Ed -

Jeep wrangler body painting photos
Dr.Robotnik replied to Shodog's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Hi Jim, Thanks a lot for sharing the paint tips with us. I am gradually working up to starting to paint (can't believe I've never done it before). Its good to see tips about using spray cans as I can't afford an airbrush... So to cut a long story short (to late) Thanks a lot [] as you've done some great work as per .... Cheers Ed -
Still got the same old car?
Dr.Robotnik replied to mymonsterbeetleisbroken's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
I have an original The Hornet and am going to rebuild it this weekend. It was a very used car (by its previous owners) when I got it back in the 80's and I never had the money to sort it out. I had a ripped copy of the manual and always looked at the penultimate page (I think) of the built car all gleaming and new. I used to wish my car was like that. I never had a proper shell either. I now have lots of hop-ups and a new shell and am going to return it to better than new (to me) condition. I can't wait. [] -
I am more than willing to entertain the idea that it was an honest mistake as I don't like to think badly of people. However since he wrote saying; He never said he had the parts NIP and also he said I should have spotted this on the parts photos. and I replied with all threads, emails and other information refuting those two points (as quoted earlier in the thread) he has not replied to me! I am gutted as I have helped him out in the past. [] Ed

Stripping paint from Lexan with Coca Cola??????
Dr.Robotnik replied to Dr.Robotnik's topic in General discussions
I will have a look later and see how this little experiment is going. I wanted to leave it in at least a week..... we'll see a little later. (Fingers crossed) Thanks for your continued interest.[] Cheers Ed -
what is going on with prices!!
Dr.Robotnik replied to slither302's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
As far as I see it. Its xmas. A lot of the time people really want a specific present for xmas and nothing else will do so they spend a lot of money on it on ebay. However just wait 'till Spring and you'll see a lot of these xmas gifts reappear on ebay as people try and re-coup the amount they spent over xmas. Its now just a waitin game until the January sales!!! Cheers Ed -
Thanks for your reply, So I was just about right and it meant a new part in packet. Well I emailed him earlier to ask what the crack was and he replied to me saying; He never said he had the parts NIP He also said I should have spotted this on the parts photos. Two problems with those statements, firstly his reply to my wanted post for two links was only; "I have everything you want NIP" secondly he has never posted on the forum in question pics of these parts or emailed me any pics (I have reviewed the whole site this morning). To me this leaves nothing open to misinterpretation and I am doubley hacked off, which I am pretty sure I expressed in my email to him. Cheers Ed

Hi guys, Perhaps you can help me out on this one. This happened to me on another website so I thought I'd ask about it here so as not to get the person in trouble if there is a reasonable explanation. In the buy and sell area of the site I said I'd like to buy two trailing links for a vintage RC car. One person replied and said; "I have everything you need NIP" I assumed this meant 'New In Plastic' and went ahead with the deal without asking for parts pics as the person had seemed reasonable when I dealt with them before. He also asked if I wanted to swap one of my spare rare NIP decal kits for this part (the parts are like $7 NIP and the decals worth at least $45). The parts arrived loose in an envelope today and have blatantly come off a used car, they are scratched and where the pivot balls go is worn out and sloppy. I am pretty *expletive* off. [:@] The car the parts are for is a new build restoration (I bought a used car and replaced every part on it), and this guy new that. I have no problem with used parts but as he asked to swap parts he said were NIP for rarer decals and then the parts turned up well used, I feel I have been done! I would like other peoples opinions about this as I have a tendency to go off the deep end....[6] Cheers Ed

Thanks a lot for your compliment Rich, I can't wait to see your RC10 project too. Cheers Ed
