Hi , I have a lot of experience with nitro engines (30 years), building them and racing in a few different classes... and they can run for more than 15mins at a time as most of of the finals for racing are 45min long, I love Nitro cars and have quite a few tgx/tg10 and others, all of my runners give me virtually zero problems because they are tuned correctly and maintained after use. However, if you don't have any experience or know someone locally that does i would recommend that you stick to electric cars with better batteries and an electronic speed controller.

Unusual vintage buying experiences...
Disco replied to Hibernaculum's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Some years ago i replied to an advert in the back of a RC car racing magazine for a tamiya car, i called the seller, who was an wealthy older gent with an apparent large collection of RC cars trains and other models, he always told his wife, who had no interest in RC that every kit was 20 quid.... I bought a mint new built Fox and Celica GrB from him that i still have. I went to visit him a few times after with a few RC cars for him to drive around his huge back garden, he liked to drive them but did not use many of his own, it was a fair drive to his house but it was worth it for the look on his face running my cars around while his wife did us tea and cakes/ biscuits. -
Sounds like the rubber boots have gone really hard, It may be time to replace them with some more flexible ones or remove them to see if it improves the tight side?
-
Never seen one of those before ! was it japan market only ?
-
Just one thing to add , there was a genuine Tamiya hopup front anti roll bar available for the original Fox, I have one fitted to all my Foxes.

No charge .. i'll bring in next time I am onsite probably next week.

...... And its good you have a different view, It would a boring old world without opinion, can't see why you should be slated for airing your view on a open forum of like minded people with various opinions. I enjoy this hobby and I am always open to new views on anything without getting bent out of shape, better that than descending into the keyboard warrior you see on other forums just to try a prove a point.

I fully agree with all the points on the list below to help define a true vintage car in my mind, but its only my opinion and we all have those.... Box art (not photographs) Larger kit box size with everything laid out (not just: all parts shoved inside the body shell in a tiny kit box) Blister pack(s). Mechanical Speed Controller included (a hallmark of everything vintage, whether you like them or not) At least some screw bags labelled according to "Car Name" with a picture of the car printed on the header card. Parts/sprues embossed with simply "RCC Car Name" and "Made In Japan". Genuine sponsor decals I have a mix of some nice 'vintage' cars restored, new builds and runners, I also have some new and re release cars that run hard, I have these because I convinced myself that I would thrash these and take it easy on the vintage runners, but this did not happen in reality, just ask anyone who saw me run the 959, kingcab, fox and vanquish at one of the iconic rc meets, my son also ran my terra scorcher and boomerang at the same meet, was a great day out that I plan on doing again. Incidentally, I consider the cars I mentioned as 'vintage' I don't feel limited by kit numbers like the it being in the first 100 or whatever.

I compared the driveshafts and the 959 one is definitely smaller than the MF-01X , don't know for sure what other cars use 10mm hex as most are, as you know already 12mm. If you have the facility you could machine some 12mm solid Tamiya hex's down to 10mm.
-
I have a few 959's and Celica's, in fact the Celica was my first rc car and whilst they are lovely cars in engineering and looks they were fragile back in the day. Now the plastic is 30 years old even more so... one of my 959 runners has metal suspension arms and is better but these do transfer the load to the gear cases.. so not indestructible. The MF-01X will be tougher and parts will be cheap/easy to get if anything breaks, just my ten pence worth..

Some old motors are just like that, the tolerances in armature position to windings is variable, so you most likely have a couple of degrees retarded timing, I have a vintage black endbell motor in my Audi Quattro that is the same. It is possible on motors that have holes in the can to gently twist the armature relative to the shaft to fix it, but its easy to ruin the motor if you're not careful....
-
I Think the 959 dogbones are smaller than most other cars so although the shafts might fit you would need a dogbone with two different size ends? Just my thoughts, but I have both cars so when I get a minute i'll try it....
-
I assume you mean the black CVA's ? if so Banzai hobby have them for about 6 quid a set and if you choose small packet shipping its peanuts
-
XV-01 all the way ! I have the Lancia delta rally and the Asterion truck , they are both great and require virtually no hopups although I fitted the cvd shafts and reinforced suspension arms both fairly cheap from Banzai hobby.
-
Strange that ....I always found it very forgiving with celica diff in, if it starts to spin apply power to pull it out, that works usually. I have an MF01X to build so I can let you know what its like at a later date.
-
Does you speed controller not have a brake function or are you using the std MSC?
-
I find the 959 ok to drive and not too twitchy, but if you want to make it more stable fit the Celica Gr.B centre diff.
