  1. ok,since the sport tuned is back ordered at tower hobbies,i was thinking of going with the dirt tuned in my rebuilt wild one.is it too much for the gear box?i rebuilt it with bearings and the 850 bushing.also added frog optional cvd's.will the esc from the frog re-release be able to handle it?what size pinion should i use?

Dirt tuned is a 27 turn motor with replaceable brushes and I suspect slightly different timing to a silver can (but I could be wrong) so I can't see any reason why it would do any harm as there have been far hotter motors used in this chassis.

  2. Hi all,

I have a boomerang/winger that I am restoring and have read about the motor setting tool on here but now can't find it with search, so I want to know if there is another way to accurately set motor without it?

    Cheers for all help

  3. if your in the uk and that front end is going spare i could really use it, will be putting up a build post building a car from parts donated for free or for the postage cost.

It's actualy on a local auction site down here in NZ along with the batteries but considering the good cause (and the chance to claim the long distance award!!!) I will think about getting it to add to your new project. I also think it is back end not front but considering I had no idea to start with don't take that as gospel.

  4. That is a nice looking upgrade. I don't know if I will have enough room for mine, but I like your idea of sending it flat to save costs. If you could possibly use a marker you could help some of us hackers bend it nicely without pulling all of the hair out of our head. Lastly, if you only had 15 people interested, do you have a price ball park??? Thanks and I think I would be after one that has the Monster Beetle script in the back of it instead of the Bug Off.

Done a bit of home work and I should be able to do them for $20-25 NZ (approx 9-12 pounds or 18-23 US$) plus shipping as a flat sheet and I have changed cad to cut out more so it should be fairly simple to bend and fit. For fully bent I would probably be looking for $50-60 NZ (20-24 pounds or 40-50 US$) plus shipping. Of course that is based on enough interest to justify buying a sheet of Ally. All I did to bend though was cut a bit of wood to 20mm (width of gear box) and take to it with a BFH till it was shape I wanted then hacksaw and drill to fit, approx 2 hours total. As for shipping I have no idea as to cost but flat it would be about 8x 10 photo size I would guess. Custom script and text is kind of tricky in that it is not till it is finished that you know for sure it has worked so I would only do up to 4 letters per line as standard, more then that I could not guarantee results and there would be a good chance of warpage when fitted.

  5. I thought your custom bumper looks good! I'm working on a Beetle nowadays. I was wondering if you have the standard motor mount pieces here or is it something a little fancier?

Motor mount is standard but "dust cover" on other side is a custom work in progress, not quite a perfect colour match but close to the red of the chassis. It is just a 12mm thick acrylic circle with 2 countersunk holes but I am going to "dome" it into a nicer shape and polish it up when I pull gear box down in near future.

  6. Any takers????

Have given it a good thrashing and no harm done so mission accomplished on durability, next step is to find out how many are wanted by other Beetle owners out there, if there is enough demand I will do a small run. To make it easier to ship I propose to leave it flat which will require bending by the buyer and drilling of holes to install (prototype took about 2 hours to fit) . If there is a majority opposed to this I will bend and drill them but it will cost more to cover my time and added packaging. I can do custom text or logo's but keep it small and simple. I don't have a price as yet but should have an idea this week once I get some prices on the sheet metal. Reply here or PM me if you are keen.

  7. No pics as batteries are charging but it is a TA 03 RS, just bare chassis with silver can and worn foam tyres, seems a bit noisey in rear gear box and no belt but only NZ$15 ($11-12 US$) so I reckon not a bad deal, just means my return to this hobby is getting bigger as what started out as a beetle build now includes a winger resto and now the TA as well.

    Cheers for all the info.

  8. Hi Blaque Jaque,

I can do (almost) anything in the centre where it says 'bug off' down to approx 1mm 'bridges'' space is the only constraint as it only measures 55mm wide by 75mm high some of the other designs I played with included a VW logo, smiley face, MB and various vent type styles. I think if there is a demand for these I will do a small run but I want to tweak the shape in a couple of places to provide more strength before I offer it out to TC members. What did you have in mind for custom text as I can play with the design on the computer without cutting anything.

  9. Cheers for the positive comments, I have another couple of designs I've done up on CAD but not machined including a VW logo and various 'cooling vent/slots' instead of the 'bug off' Hadn't thought of making them but it would be quite easy to knock out 15-20 if the demand was there, this one is made out of stainless but I think alloy would be better from a weight point of view.

  10. story so far. . . . Got given an old Blackfoot by my younger brother that had good chassis and wheels, no body or electrics and a lot of minor stuff missing. Decided to do it MB style as that is what I had back in the day. Started hunting for bits and pieces and decided as I want my son to have it in a couple of years to sacrifice authenticity for practicality so got a list of parts I needed or wanted and started hitting LHS and not so LHS, local auction site etc. Finally got all the bits I wanted except a rear bumper (and now new gearbox internals but thats another tale) so got onto one of the machines at work and made this...... still got to polish it up and bend it to suit but pretty happy with how it came out.

  11. Got an old MB chassis given to me and got the bits and pieces needed to get it going, put it all together and installed radio gear, admired my handiwork while battery charged up, turned it on, took off, click, click, click click, click, click, click click. Figured it can't do much harm and finished the pack as it was so good just to see it in action. Stripped it down and the minor gear on spur has lost a tooth, question is how do I clean 15-20 years worth of grease and gunk off the other gears before re-assembling?

Cheers in advance for all advice.

  12. Update.

Condition of car and chassis is shocking, really only screws and other metal parts worth keeping, all plastic parts are badly worn and scratched, chassis has snapped in half at some stage, there are 7 homemade metal brackets holding car together, car has had about 10-15 years of abuse and I suspect body was put on it to sell only. However I am now hunting for a suitable chassis to use for body as it is too good to waste and has grown on me in the last few days, thought it was ugly to start off with but now like the lines of it, on another note. How hard is it to peel off decals and then put them back on? Decals on rear wing are on wrong sides and I would like to "fix" them up, are they likely to tear, could I get them off and then apply a film to them to hold them on if the adhesive is no good? All advice gratefully recieved.

    Cheers

  13. Update.

Front diff housing is split, and empty, all gears missing, rear diff housing and rear bathtub modified to repair at some stage, no prop shaft, both front drive shafts gone, right front lower arm broken, front bumper broken, and whole thing showing signs of sitting in this sort of state for years. Dust an dirt caked on everything!

So out of curiosity what is this shell worth as I feel the car does not warrant anything but being turned into a donor and I havn't got a suitable chassis to put it on.

Condition of shell is no splits some minor scratches and slight curling on edges of stickers.

Bear in mind I am in New Zealand so shipping will need be a factorered in.
