Giving a vintage Thunder Shot some fun factor
MAD RACER replied to thunderstriker's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
I use a 13T EzRun system in my T/Shot and it screams and it loves it LOL I have adj top links, Unis all round and a alloy A5 brace, Custom wing mounts & wing and modern rubber on 2.2 wheels. Not in pic. Seriously under rated buggy... -
What do you like doing for fun with your R\Cs
MAD RACER replied to AndyjcClod's topic in General discussions
Building them, Modifying and running. Done a few videos but that's not my cup of tea & since sold my Go Pro 3 Hero LOL -
The problem with the Frog is most owners build it up with 0 degree in the Castor block. Instructions aren't that clear in the vintage manual . As soon as you add a few degrees ( Very little angle) in the castor block like what the Wild one has in it's trailing arms makes the Frog so much better and not edgy in steering inputs. Don't think I'm all for the Frog as my W/One is a awesome performer once softer rear shocks were put on. The front end on the W/O flogs out quickly as Gruntyfuggly said. But is awesome to drive. Just a big flaw by Tamiya on the Frog /Brat that they didn't explain this. I think a little in the back pages in the vintage manual if memory serves me correct? . Maybe someone can confirm this. No info in the re re Manual. Just checked.

Alternative rear shocks for Brat / Frog
MAD RACER replied to njmlondon's topic in Re-Release Discussions
Ok I'll chime in. I use 70mm shocks from Yeah Racing. Not sure If they are still being made. Another way I solved this is using the original dampers ( Re re ) with Losi Mini T aftermarket GPM alloy shocks. Just used the springs of them and worked well. These shocks really suit the front of the Brat/Frog too. E bay item nu. 200648729357 -
Nice work. Yep great fun to build. I enjoyed this build more then the Avante for some reason. Maybe less complicated especially in the front end. Nice colour choice too.

Finished: Grasshopper II restoration.

Nice work and thinking outside of the circle. -
We had 2 new guys with Wild Ones at Boondal. The black one is really nice with alloy wheels, Working head lights and tail lights. A brushless motor too. The other one is stock I think. Pic's are from our awesome camera man Scotty.

Bearings can be replaced at a later date, right?
MAD RACER replied to Warthog's topic in General discussions
Yep you can replace them later just leave it on the shelf till you do so. For all the reasons stated above! -
I used 440 threaded rod with Du bro ball ends on my Frogs and Brat
-
Yes the Avante Hop up tower that came in the Hi caps shock kit for it.

Kyosho Scorpions, Tomahawk & Beatle in action at Boondal
MAD RACER replied to MAD RACER's topic in Re-Release Discussions
Yes we are very lucky to have this track that is untouched since the 80's. Great place for vintage though the track is a little boring. It's track design was taken out of the Tamiya catalogue from the 80's. -
We had a good turn out with the Kyosho's on Saturday. The Tomahawk seems a little over steerer compared to the others but nicer to drive. A big thank you to Scott for the pic's

My Egress would have been same out of the box. The stock set up was way off. The rear sat too high and the front too low even with the spring pre load adj to the max at each end. Would of had the same issues at yours. Rule of thumb with 4wd is adjust the spring pre load at the rear to be arms level or a little lower and the front to be slightly above arms level . Then adjust to suit the tyre grip. Front higher for less steering and rear lower for rear grip . Reverse it for the opposite effect . As I said I had to cut 2 coils of the rear springs to the correct ride height at the rear . The front tower had to swapped out too for the same reason. Once all adjusted in ride height they are pretty nice in the handling department.

Wow..... Glad I bought one from Stella even though I didn't have a Egress till some time later. Yep agree with Percymon time you buy it all it will still add up.

Frog shock tuning? Becoming my FPV build thread...
MAD RACER replied to JoFan's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Yeah Now have the pic's Looks all good to me But it's the springs and damping that I can't tell by pic's. The Frog is a light buggy to start off with so a soft spring set up is important in order to work effectively. The rear is a lot easier to sort out then the front.. As I said in my TRF Frog thread I found small Losi Mini T aftermarket shocks to work the best with the light front end .. Doesn't mean it wont work with bigger shocks just the springs would be harder to match. I like what you did with the one piece shock tower up the front. Looks so much better. -
Nice work. You are lucky that you have it still. My parents would have thrown it out ages ago. Then again I still have my Optima Mid from 87 but I gave that to a friend who used it a little then put it in a cupboard on his parents dairy farm.and after 20 yrs I got it back complete with cow dun on it too. Lol Awesome memories and will hold special place in your heart I'm sure.

Frog shock tuning? Becoming my FPV build thread...
MAD RACER replied to JoFan's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Frogs don't have any damping up the front Have you modified it to run dampers ? This could help you -
I'm lucky enough to have a Mini Mustang 2 speed as a runner. You need to find out what it needs. Wheels and Chassis spine are the hardest to find. As Madiventor said Hot Shot wheels bolt straight on.

Mat for electrics I'm running a Bluebird digital servo with a 3 Racing Heavy Duty servo saver as the stock Tamiya one is week for a 4wd. A 60A esc with a 9T motor. My Avante is running the same gear but e with a 10T . Motor was matched too the limited gearing choice with a brushless . Funny as my Avante is well matched to the 10T but the Egress just needed that little more for some reason.
-
Thanks guys. Yogi we hope to see you soon. Kim we wish you were closer too. You have some awesome cars too. Moffman they are a awesome runner indeed But the Tomahawk is better in my opinion. So it's not too late and are well worth it. Hope your projects are going well Enrich.

Thanks Guys. Enrich I saw a Egress on flea bay in white while building this and loved how all the decals matched a white background. So I thought white will be the body colour of choice. Kim the wheels and tyres are off my Avante but the white blends in well and doesn't look out of place as you said. Once built I bolted up the original black wheels then tried the pink version but opted for white light weight ones till I bolted up modern 2,2's. Thommo I was horrified how the front end was so far out from bottoming out with the original shock tower. I tried a Pargu shock tower from a Avante 2001 which was a little better then read somewhere here that original option Hi Caps front tower for the re re Avante was the best solution and lucky I had one from a set I used on my TRF Frog so it was bolted it up with good success . Still not perfect but almost right. I ended up cutting 2 coils of the rear springs to get the correct ride height .

Wow I can post pic's up again. Well I recently finished my Egress Re re build to run at Boondall. The build went smoothly but was not happy with the ride height of this at all. The front sat too low and the back to high even with the pre load adjusted to the max at each end. So after a few simple mods and a new front shock tower I hit the Boondal track. I used modern rubber and electrics. This was dialled. Every bit as good as my well sorted Avante or even better thanks to the longer wheel base. Just loved how much rear end grip the trailing rear arms give and stacks of steering too match.

Just a snap shot of our regular Kyosho Scorpions at Boondal

Looks like a fun kit to build and run. Nice score
-
It may have not been over geared BUT more so over run. Yes one battery but did you run it till the battery dumped?? How many Milliamps is the battery used? I only run my brushed motors for no more then 5 min and check it. Brushed motors generate more heat then brushless due to no brush contact.
