well with that explanation the $27.99(US) for the Trinity motor sounds like a good bargain!
I just burned up one of my 21t Venom Fireballs in my LunchBox. I think I'll go to the LHS one of these days and pickup a Trinity P2k.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
-
Also consider that the P2k is the type of motor you use when you want to win ROAR-sanctioned stock races; whereas the Fireball is the type of motor a backyard basher on an extreme budget uses.
that makes sense...
-
Bear in mind that the Venom motors do have adjustable timing, which, if ajusted, would result in more rpm.
yeah... but comparing the 27t P2k @ 30k+ RPMs vs. the 21t Venom at 15k+ RPMs it just seems like such a HUGE difference. Could it really just be because of timing?
-
Okay quick question about Venom Fireballs themselves. On their website they list these specs for their motors:
Fireballâ„¢ Modifieds come in four different winds to suit your need
for speed.
- VEN-1312 [15 turn Double]
- 7.2 Volts / 29280rpm 8.4Volts / 34920rpm
[*]VEN-1313 [17 turn Double]
- 7.2Volts / 25560rpm 8.4Volts / 30180rpm
[*]VEN-1314 [19 turn Double]
- 7.2Volts / 18720rpm 8.4Volts / 20500rpm
[*]VEN-1315 [21 turn Double]
- 7.2Volts / 15660rpm 8.4Volts / 18360rpm
- 7.2 Volts / 29280rpm 8.4Volts / 34920rpm
But, then I went to trinity's website to look at the specs for the P2k motor and found..
TYPICAL SPECS:
RPM: 30,600-this is an optimal manufacturing figure, actual RPM will probably be lower and vary between samples.
Power: 116.7W
Efficiency: 70.7%
Torque: 175N-mm (Newton-mm)
Okay, so what gives? I know that the spec's for the P2k are "optimal" AND that the timing for the P2k is set for 24degrees advanced while the Venom's are set for Zero degrees. BUT, shouldn't the RPM's be higher for the Venom Fireball motors? Or are the P2k's really a whole lot slower?

Yes, i know what you mean about the Ted cursings, and i'm note sure how this abides with the moderators?!
Also,
once again i am mentioning this word, begins with B and rhymes with
Mugger. I really do not think this should be deemed as swearing, yes i
know what it means.
Mike
seriously... this is just me being a stupid American. I don't really know what that means. I've heard it before. but I don't fully understand what it implies. So, it doesn't offend me... Is it like the "F" word? Or is it used more like the "S" word we americans use when we crash our newly fixed "LunchBonzers" (that's my affectionate name for my half Lunch Box, half Bonzer). Which brings us to another thing... Is there a word "bonzer" in Australia? Someone once mentioned that to me?
-
Are there any other recommended mod's for the Lunchbox? One's that don't require me fabricating some sort of aluminum chassis?
Good thing that you didnt want to build an aluminium chassis, it probably wouldnt have stood up to what you throw at it. Im thinking you'll need carbon fibre, kevlar, reinforced carbon carbon, and lots of other space age composites to keep this lunchbox together, considering that it now falls apart without even crashing it.
I was thinking of using some sort of steel block... then I could call it the Tamiya "Lunch Brick". But... I decided against it cause then when I hit the concrete sidewalk I might start breaking that!
-
I feel sorry for this lunchbox of yours, it must be
one of the most abused out there! It must be time for a trip back to
the optometrist to get some new specs to stop these high speed stacks.
Or perhaps you could just slow things down a bit by not running a 21t
motor, but wheres the fun in that! Cheers
hahahaha... yeah... that would help?
this time though... I didn't crash into anything. It just finally gave
in from all of the other times it was "bashed" into something
solid.... OH well... Gotta keep Tamiya revenues up right?

****... I was "bashing" with the Box this past weekend. And, the steering servo broke off a piece of the chassis. The two points on the chassis where the steering servo are secured on are very small and look rather weak. Anyone have any ideas on how to improve this?
-
I am repairing an old Lunchbox (not sure what version, would have been bough in 1995 ish). One of my steering rods has broken. I would like to replace this but I have read that a Blackfoot steering arm maybe a better choice, this correct? Is it a straight swap? And could someone tell me what sprues/bags I require from the Blackfoot to get the right parts and I can get them from my local model shop.
Many thanks
Ross Clarke
no, it's not a straight swap. but, it's not bad either. I switched over to the Blackfoot steering rods but that was because I had so many extra steering rods left over. When I switched over I also changed the servo saver to a Kimbrough Large or Medium Servo Saver (can't remember which). In addition, I had to use the 5mm ball connectors on the servo saver and the left and right uprights. Also, the holes on the uprights were too small for the 5mm ball connectors. So, I had to make the outter holes just a bit larger.
Oh another option would be to go to your nearest LHS and have them whip up some generic turnbuckles (Lunsford maybe?), a Kimbrough Servo Saver, a 5mm ball connector, and also a few ball connector endlinks. That would probably be an even better solution...
-
Bodis, that's very clean! How'd you do that?
-
Mad Ax, that's very nice! keep up the good work!

I'm a Crazy Fool, but I reckon the best modification to a Lunchbox is turn it into an A-Team Van and stick it on a M-chassis [
]I'm sure I've seen topics about that here. Sorry to diversify slightly from the query above, but if you wanted to fit a Lunchbox shell onto a M-chassis, what wheelbase can you use? The 210mm Mini type or longer?
Can someone get a tape measure out and check the distance between their wheel arch centres please!
I love it when a plan comes together... [
]someone here has one similar in their showroom...

I like it! But, I also still want something that'll do wheelies and jump off a small ramp. My sons love it... I'm hoping some day that I'll be able to jump the Lunchbox up and over my Daschund! HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!
-
....those tyres look cool! any idea who made those? ...
I got those tires with one of my Ebay purchases. I don't know who makes them and I wouldn't recommend them. They wore really weird and are WAY off balance. makes the thing shake like crazy with the old suspension and a Venom 21t motor. I'm hoping that with the different tires and the different rims that it will be better....
-
MonsterBeetle, thanks again for the help. I've finally gotten most of the stuff sorted out. I still need:
-a new motor plate (so I can put the proper pinion on. don't worry it's on order from Bodis!)
-resolder the motor plugs. this is a cheapo Bonzer motor that I'm using. It's a bit longer so it almost rubs against the tires.
-oh and I've got some 2.2 truck tires on order. hopefully, using Blackfoot rims will help give alittle more room between the front shocks and the rims.
here's the link to some of the pics if you're interested...
-
Yes, even more correct nomenclature if you use 0.8module and 0.6module instead as per my post above.
Cheers
oh yes, sorry... Thank you so much for the info!
-
AMAZING! I just did a short test drive today and it's totally
different. The brace for the front struts and the braces for the rear
struts (to reinforce the rear of the chassis tub) make a HUGE
difference. Compared to before the whole thing is just so much
stiffer! And you're right the rear of the chassis deck felt like
it was about to snap. Now it's just solid.
I still have sort out the front suspension. I still need to go to
the LHS and try to get some Lunsford turnbuckles with a few pillow-ball
endlinks (don't know if that's what their called). but... so far
I'm really happy with it.
-
HEY!!! Now THAT'S! a good mod! I've got some more spare Blackfoot steering rods. I'll have to dig up a couple tonight and do that! Thanks for the update!
BTW, this thing is gonna probably be a basher again. It's gonna temporarily take the place of my Super Blackfoot. I was playing with the new 13t motor in the Super Blackfoot and I kinda mis-judged the sidewalk again! Another front end demolished by a full speed head-on, off-centered smash! I guess I'm getting really near sighted in my old age....
-
Okay, so I'm trying to bring back my old Lunchbox to basher form. A couple of months back it had a bad full speed head-on "accident" with a concrete wall. So, after breaking another of my bashers I decided to put some effort into getting my Lunchbox working again. In so doing, I've done the following;
-added BB's all around
-added a Kimbrough Large Servo Saver
-used old Blackfoot steering rods
-used one long Blackfoot steering rod to act as a shock tower brace (thanks again to the info on Tamiya Club!)
-used the Futaba FX-10 CRP arms in front to help with the steering slop (thanks again to the info on Tamiya Club!)
-added the third shock setup to the rear (thanks again to the info on Tamiya Club!)
-replaced all the stock shocks with the old oil shocks from my TL01B ripoff (aka Bonzer or Cross Tiger)
-replaced the MSC with the all in one ESC/Receiver from my TL01B ripoff (aka Bonzer or Cross Tiger)
So, the question is... Are there any other recommended mod's for the Lunchbox? One's that don't require me fabricating some sort of aluminum chassis? Oh and now I'm just looking for another Lunchbox motor adapter plate. for some reason the original one broke in the "accident".
-
Okay so far, from what I can gather for my Tamiya kits the pinions are as follows:
32dp - Blackfoot, Super Blackfoot, King Blackfoot, Lunchbox
48dp metric - Wild Dagger, TL01B Copy
Does this sound right to everyone?
-
thank for letting me know! now I can order some steel replacements.
-
yeah, sorry for digging up the old thread. but, after reading that the aluminum pinions wear so easily I was trying to find info on some steel pinions from places like
http://www.robinsonracing.com/catalog/32pitchpinion.html
But, then I got confused. Somewhere I read that my Wild Dagger can use either a 18t or 20t 48pitch metric pinion. But, I always thought that they used a 32 pitch pinion. Then I called my LHS and they didn't know for sure (cause they don't usually carry Tamiya products) and told me that it uses a 32 pitch. Then I read that there's 48 pitch AND there's 48 pitch metric. So... I'm all confused now. I just don't want to make a mistake and get the wrong gears and/or stay with my current aluminum pinions and eventually wear them so much that they eat the gears. Especially since I want to try a little hotter motor in my Super Blackfoot, King Blackfoot AND Wild Dagger. Oh and something that's alittle more torquey for the Lunchbox (you know to do the wheelie thing).
-
Okay question about pinions... I'm all confused. I called my LHS and they said that Tamiyas have a 32 pitch pinion. Now I'm looking things up and it appears that some have a 48 pitch metric pinion. Can someone clear this up for me? I've got the following kits I'm trying to restore or bash with;
-Blackfoot
-Super Blackfoot
-King Blackfoot
-Lunchbox (from back in the 80's... I think...)
-Wild Dagger
Thanks in advance!

Still a little confused re the chassis being designed for 2 or 4wd. I accept that the blackfoot does'nt use the same chassis as the baja champ, but, and it's a big but, it does use the same chassis as the twin detonator which is 4wd, plus the twin has 2 motors and gearboxes, so the weight distribution must be completely different, so are you saying that one or other of those 2 is rubbish?...
The chassis for the TD/WD/DB is VERY different from the TL01B chassis. With the TD/WD/DB trucks there are two independent gearboxes and motors. So, if you remove the front gear box; you also remove the weight of the; motor, dogbones, AND gears. With the TL01B or the Cross Tiger, it's a shaft driven 4WD setup where both gearboxes work together. So, if you removed just the drive shaft between the front and rear gearboxes it would only be 2WD. But, you still have all that weight up in front because of the extra gears that are still in the front gearbox. I'm sure you could probably remove all of the gears and the drive shaft between the gearboxes. But, that's a pain...
oh and I have the Cross Tiger (aka Bonzer) and a Wild Dagger. I've gotta say that the quality between the two are very similar... at least to me they are.

This might seem odd at first, but I'm searching for a way to describe it. I bought a Twin Detonator some time ago for a modern Tamiya basher. After driving it for awhile I've come to realize that its just not all that fun to run. I can't put my finger on it. Something feels missing compared to the older stuff. At first I thought it might be quality. The plastics seem more flexy and cheap. But I dismissed this as this more flexable plastic is actually less likely to snap in a wreak. It can't really be the performance. The wide stance of the truck keeps it on its wheels and the dual motors let it tear through anything. In many ways it out-performs my old Bullhead, but the Bull is just more fun.
I wish I could find what it is that irks me about the truck. Maybe its the unrealistic looks. Let's face it, the Blackfoot looks alot more real. Maybe its that this chassis just keeps getting rehashed. I don't know. The Twin Det is tough, well priced and performs good yet still seems to be lacking something. Is it the flaws and weird handling quirks that make older Tamiyas more fun? I love my Lunch Box and the Det runs rings around it. The Det's stronger than my Monster Beetle, but I find the big bug more endearing. I know not all modern Tamiyas are like this, but what is it that some seem to lack? Any ideas?
IMHO, it's different strokes for different eras. Back when I was younger getting an old Tamiya that was relatively cheap enough to "experiment" and "bash" with was fun. Racing was fun. But, just seeing what I could think up was even better. Now pulling out my 20+yr old Blackfoot and seeing if I can get it to keep up with my Wild Dagger is a blast. I dunno. I guess it's me trying to recapture my youth. Two different reasons for two different times in my life.
Now comparing specifically the Blackfoot to the Twin Det. Well... I liked the Twin Det for jumps. But, I don't like it as much now... ever since I put a 13t Orion motor in my Blackfoot. Now the Blackfoot is just faster! And because the suspension doesn't absorb much, when the Blackfoot hits a jump... BOUNCE! It's just a blast to jump. The TD/WD though... Is fun cause it doesn't always flip. It's just slower. So now I'm trying to figure out how to stick two 7 cell packs in it. Once that's done... I'm sure it will be my favorite basher yet again.... :-)

okay wait.... before I trash the old fireball... how do I know when I've "burned" the motor?
