What did you learn from your first Tamiya?
TheFantom replied to essexboyracer's topic in General discussions
I learned that a Road Wizard can't survive a 30+ mph smack into a retaining fence during a competition heat. (thanks, airport signal interfearance!) -
Hmmmm, well, I guess the worst "off-roader" ever, at least from my personal experience, would have to have been my first RC ever, called the Fire Fox (I can't remember who made it). The body was a knock off of the Tamiya Lamborghini Cheetah, with a cheap plasticky chassis and no real suspension to speak of. It was slow too, and had a very short range. It has a sentimental place in my heart since it was my first RC, but overall I have to admit, it was a total POS.

Heh, liked the drum n bass. Nice job. Hey was that silver car with the rally tail sitting in the parking lot an older Impreza? Looked like one :-D

Total Shelf Queens/display: Kyosho Fantom (my absolute favorite RC car ever!) Light duty Runners/ semi show: Kyosho Optima (upgraded to turbo version) Tamiya Blackfoot (currently undergoing a boxart re-fit) Bashers/Runners: Tamiya Grasshopper (my sentimental favortie) HPI 1/18th Nissan Skyline GTR Associated RC-12L3 Losi JRX-Pro Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 (total beast with brushless)

Hey dude, BigR and I finished it up today by painting the body/wing, and switched to a 21 tooth pinion, etc. It runs real strong, heat build-up is managable with the 21 tooth and its a good balance of speed/heat with the motor in it. The 23 tooth in it was making it way too hot, and the 17 we ran it with was dooooogg slow.

Wow Score! Congrats on your find, very nice!

Only 15 years? Seems more like an eternity ;-) LAWL! All kidding aside, my buddy 94 has been there for me through everything since I've known him, good, bad, and inbetween, and I wouldn't trade anything in the world for that. And having my best friend enjoy so many of the same hobbies and passtimes as I do makes them that much better. I'm also grateful for having made new friends through this little hobby: To my friend Richard, I can't believe you lived near me for all those months, and we had so many similar interests, and I didnt know about it, lol. I'm glad I found out eventually! And Rob, dude you are the R/C MAN! Like Sean said, it's been great sharing our vintage cars with eachother, and racing together at the old edge, and out in the parking lot. It's brought back a lot of great memories for me, and soon, we'll all be out there on the race line at the same time tearing it up! And thanks to Tamiyaclub.com and the good people who post here. This place is great!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, man do we get that RC show here? Usually on Speed Channel is just lame Nascar garbage with a smattering of interesting racing thrown in between.

Sweet, thanks for the replies everyone! I'll be sure to take all this info to heart once the project begins. Yeah Sean, it's gonna come with an aftermarket lexan body. If it comes with the original shell at all, I'm pretty sure it'll be broken.

Hi everyone, Recently my cousin has been kind enough to donate his old Blackfoot to me (it's currently otw in the mail), which I plan on restoring to as new a condition as possible. I have never worked extensively on a Blackfoot before, and was wondering what I should be expecting in terms of most common broken items, replacement part availability, etc. I did a little poking around on eBay, but only could find mostly "Blackfoot extreme" parts. I'm pretty sure that's a totally different truck. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

How Much Did You Pay For Your Ride Back In The Day?
TheFantom replied to GTodd's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
$109 U.S. Dollars for the Road Wizard F-1 at Sheldon's Hobbies in the SF bay area, back in '86. $70 for my Grasshopper in like '87 at the same shop. -
I can remember back in 1986, when I was just a little kid, finally getting my first real RC car (Road Wizard F1). I will always have fond memories of sitting down with my dad and building that car, and also of the insane excitment of taking it to my first sanctioned "official" race. Man that was fun! But like my buddy 94eg, I certainly won't miss the 4-6 minute run times. When you are 10 years old and you have to wait 45 mins+ per charge just to get a couple minutes behind the wheel, it's maddening! PS: Sean, the Lazer was sick man, we definately have to take it out again soon. Maybe even challenge Rob's 501x to a friendly race, lol, eh Rob? ;-)

cool vids man.

OH my gosh I was there for the last day too! I raced around my old JrX-Pro buggy alongside 94's JrX-T on the track. We got to see one racer almost cry, having just learned the track was closing. It was a pretty big bummer to see the place go, but we'll just have to adapt I suppose. This morning I bought Kyosho front gold shock springs for my Turbo Optima, so Sdawg, you will have your tamiya fronts back fairly soon
