  1. I recently won this Samurai in parts on ebay. I have some spare parts that I got locally from the Marui importer at the time, so I'm quite confident I'll be able to rebuild it. I was just going over the manual when I noticed that in two different locations it warns against using non kit grease in the gearbox as it damages the polycarbonate it is made of. My question is what is your experience with Samurai gearbox breakage and do you know what grease type was in the kit, since Marui's warning included all the grease types I know of.

  2. Obviously a very similar design, too bad Duratrax cheaped out on adding a second o ring... Interestingly, it looks like you can add a second o ring by not installing one of the two spacers.

Looking at the pic it looks like the Duratrax shock shaft is a smaller diameter than Kyosho's?!

  3. I'm in Israel, too bad MRC doesn't ship outside the US... For some reason I was under the impression that the SB Sport was quite popular among the club racers, but checking ebay, I couldn't find many parts available. Is it possible that they sell this buggy under another name (not Academy)?

The part I'm looking for is the white plastic wing (Associated used to carry these so I bought it once and really liked it), do you know of any other manufacturer making these wings?

  4. rear wheels are easy, just get rear Lazer ZX-5 / Ultima RB-5 wheels (they are the same). As for the front, here's a neat trick I recently found: the outer diameter of the Ultima's front bearing is 8mm. the outer diameter of the RC10 (any RC10) front bearing is 5/16" which is 7.94mm. That means that RC10 front wheels can be mounted on the Ultima using the Ultima's 8x4 bearings. I tried it and it fits like a glove! The only possible exception is the RC10B4 wheels which I believe have different offset and might not fit right, but older versions wheels are still available.

  5. During a recent spray paint purchase, on a whim, I decided to buy these two Tamiya lubricants. Unfortunately, there are only Japanese instructions so I can't really understand the purpose of each spray. I would really appreciate it if one of the Japanese members could translate the writing on the cans. Also, can someone speculate why the lubricant spray comes in such a small can?

  6. thanks terry, great help as always!

If someone has a used set of Ultima rear red shocks (the same as in terry's description in the previous post), even with broken collars, that he wants to swap with Optima rear red shocks please contact me at: anavon@gmail.com

To sweeten up the deal I will include a pair of complete (as in: unbroken, uncracked) red shock collars.

If we're in the subject of the red shocks, what oil shock thickness do you recommend? I read somewhere that really thin oil (10wt) should be used with these shocks to obtain normal off road damping effect.

  7. Yesterday, while working on my Ultima basher project, I decided to install Kyosho red shocks I had lying around. These are the small diameter ones the came standard with the original Optima & Ultima (and some other Kyosho cars). After mounting the rear shocks I noticed they have very small suspension travel before the shock fully compressed. After checking the manual and looking at some Ultima pics I suspect there is another, third set (medium?) thats supposed to be installed at the Ultima rear. I compared the current rear shocks to my Javelin shocks and found out they are the same. So, am I right to conclude that there are 3 red shock sizes: short (front), medium (rear Ultima), and long (rear Optima)?

Are there more sizes that I should be aware of before I start looking for the correct size shocks?

  8. I just noticed this sentence in the Lazer ZX-5 RTR public relations statement at RC Zone. Nothing major but interesting non the less. You can see the whole text here

Development costs have historically been less expensive for a belt drivetrain, which is why that type of drivetrain is so popular on older cars. Kyosho is one of the only manufacturers that have invested in the technology, and that has the design ability and quality, to produce a superior shaft drive system
  9. As you may all know its very hard to tell the difference between a 48 pitch and 0.6 metric module gears. I'm trying to figure it once and for all: when did Kyosho change their spur gears to 48 pitch? I know that the Optima Mid had 0.6 module and so did the Lazer ZX, but does the Lazer ZX-R spur has the metric or imperial spur?

  10. Sofar, my experience with hopping up the car is very limited, but it has proven to perform WAY better on a full set of Hornet / SC wheels, which has plenty more grip than the original "Super Gripper" tyres, which, in my opinion is WAY to hard in the compound for good offroad-running..

I own a Wild One for several years now and I love it for its scale look and handling. I don't use Hornet wheels & tires on the Wild One -somehow they don't look right, while the original wheels dimensions look dead on. Grip is a problem though, I can't run the original tires at the local track as the car keeps spining out of control (hard packed track with lots of dust). I was thinking of using bow ties but the 2.2" tires on a Wild One look odd, so I'm now toying with the idea of cutting bow ties to fit the original 2" rims. btw: the original tires work really good in wet conditions.

  11. Sounds like a bit of price gouging going on there.

Gonna get me two as a birthday present to myself!

    - James

JR-RC has already dropped the price to $174 so I guess price will get closer to $120 as more stores will get it in stock. The release date is the same as my birthday -thats a sign from God (read: Shunsaku Tamiya) that I need to get one as well!
