  1. I hold over ten thousand bearings in stock for my own use, so I like to know where they come from and get consistent quality :)

Joaquim Assis is probably the best known seller for bearings, although there are other big concerns as well.

    Paul.

Hmmm bizarre I just searched ebay for him and cannot find him there...have we spelt his name correctly?

  2. I just bought some boring metal shielded 5x11 bearings from eBay seller irvineman. $25 for 100. They have auctions all the time.

Every bit as good as the Duratrax ones I've gotten from Tower at $12 for a pack of 10. I won't be needing to buy more 5x11's for a very long time.

Thanks for the tip, i'll check out the seller! I think I need to work out what sizes I need for my Marui Samuai and order in one large batch which it sounds like you have also :)

  3. Some bearings are still made in Japan, I have some, but the vast majority come from China, that is true. The Czech Republic also makes bearings, but high quality large ones usually for machinery, not smaller ones for RC applications.

If you can wait, there is a chap in Macau who has good bearings and extremely cheap, but they take a couple of weeks to deliver because of the distance and he is busy. Very nice chap. Joaquim Assis is his name, he used to be the owner of Walawala, but that changed its name, I don't know why and I forgot the new shop name. If you search you will find them, the seller is prolific, by far the biggest seller on eBay from recollection. He himself states that the benefit of the shield on the rubber ones is minimal.

Incidently, I just looked at the website Russ recommended and the prices look superb.

    All the best,

    Pau.

Joaquim - ahhh thats the name, that's who I purchased off from ebay a couple of years ago!

  4. Brilliant thanks for the overwhelming response and help as always guys! SO how much are these new systems then, and am I right in thinking as per the old school 27 and 40Mhz, its a case of a receiver and a controller? Do you need new servos for the system also in which case??

Finally, can you just upgrade crystals to 40Mhz if you wanted to from a 27Mhz, or do you need a new transmitter and receiver?

  5. All of my R/C gear is 27Mhz which I know is the old frequency. I have lots of spare crystals etc (all 6 bands) so thats what I have always used for all of my R/C cars. I know nowadays people tend to buy the 40Mhz radio gear. Is there a lot of difference? If I change frequencies, would I require a whole new set of radio gear and receivers etc? If so it would work out far too costly in my opinion therefore I think I would be better off just sticking to the old school frequencies!

  6. It really depends what you're using the vehicle for, metal shields run minutely more freely, but can, and do, pick up dirt & grit. Rubber shields are more resistant in dirty conditions, but aren't actually sealed as such. Rubber shielded bearings tend to be a little more expensive too.

Ahh right interesting to know. So for slightly faster movement best stick with metal then  I imagine its all very minimal though :)

  7. I get virtually all my bearings from these people:

    http://rcbearings.co.uk/

Fast service (quite often I get my order in 24hrs), they usually post the same day, very good prices & quantity discounts.

They have full kits and single bearings, rubber & metal shields, plus ceramic bearings too.

Brilliant thanks I'll look into it now! I always wondered, what's the best type to get, rubber shields isn't it??

  8. I did order a couple of years ago off someone from ebay when I gave them the dimensions of the bearing I was after, but now I cannot remember who that was?!!

Does anyone have a good idea of cheap bearings and/or the best place to buy them from? I have just ordered a Tamiya re-re Boomerang to build so I'd like to fully bullrace that from the start. I'd also like to get hold of some for my old marui Samurai too

Many thanks in advance as ever guys :)

  9. When I build a vintage kit, I don't like dry builds B) I actually like to build it to spec, including all grease and oil. This may just be a personal idiosyncracy but I like the idea that even though they will never be driven they are "ready" to be driven and set up correctly. Correct weight and behaviours - if you pick up the model and hand-turn the wheels, press the suspension etc, it's all set correctly.

Some of my new builds are now 16-20 years old, and haven't leaked any oil. This includes some with old style dampers like a Super champ, Wild One etc.

    Cheers,

    H.

Hey mate, just wondering how you manage to never run them, it must be difficult?! Also, do you have them all in a showroom we can see on here??

  10. it and the buggy champ (rough rider) are about the same price, it's due to them having to remake almost all the tooling for the chassis components for both of these cars..

Ahh right so at least we know they are prepared to remake tooling for ANY car now then!! Wow perhaps have been on these here boards are realised there was a huge customer demand for them?! Seriousy do you think people wrote to them? Seems a rather arge gamble otherwise remaking all of the tooling etc, and also why would they not have kept it all from before...too big to keep etc?

  11. Avoid Associated - their stuff is American Imperial!

I usually get mine from 'graveyard' lots, or unfinished projects off ebay...

Hi there, ok thanks will do. Just so as I understand you correctly, does this mean you literally search for 'graveyard' on ebay?! B)

  12. A lot of the hardware is interchangeable. I frequently use Traxxas and Tamiya hardware for other projects. Metric is metric and much of it will work. Really specialized parts are a problem, but screws, nuts, washers, etc. are a cinch. Some E-clips will work too.

Usually, odd size shoulder screws or kingpins, and especially steering servo links or gear shaft rods are just about impossible to use anything other than stock replacement parts though.

I prowl ebay for cheap $1-2 bags of vintage hardware and end up using tons of stuff from the resulting spares box.

OK great thanks, so basically just search ebay for 'vintage' screw bags etc? B)

  13. Hey guys,

I'm trying to get all the screws, nuts, washers, e-clips etc for an old restore project. Where may be the best bet to look for such a thing? It's not a Tamiya (shock horror!) but I know lots of sizes etc are universal. As it's not a Tamiya I know I can't go searching for particular screw bags, so herein lies the problem I guess, as I would not know what sizes come in what bags for what cars etc! Perhaps I'm stuffed? I don't need that many more as luck would have it I have slowly gone through all of my spares and matched up as many as was humanly possible!

Any help with this would be ace as always B)

  14. Great B)

Incidently, I commend what you are doing, it is a good idea, especially for newcomers, plus it is hard to get to grips with it if you haven't been around for a while. I may sound churlish, sometimes I do, sorry if you felt hurt! It is difficult to get the right tenor on emails/internet forums sometimes... I had a smile (not a smirk or grin) on my face when I wrote it!

    P.

Hey no worries at all, glad you approve :)

So come on people..how can we find out what is on Tamiya's minds now for the next re-release :P

  15. Rumours are dangerous :)

I started to go through the list, the first 3 are all wrong (I didn't bother going further) clearly more work needed B)

Neither of those have the original chassis, or something even closely resembling it. Any TTG is never going to be a re issue / re release. The 935 and 935 share no common parts, even on the body, etc. etc.

    Paul.

    Oops sorry i'll update!
