  1. Thanks for the comments guys....and for the videos (particularly loving that crazy brushless digger!!). I've stalled a bit recently with the Pumpster build, but since i'm racing it tomorrow i thought that i'd better get it at least running!....if it survives the weekend i'll pull it back apart and finish it properly (i've got lots more planned for it)! So...i made a simple chassis to suit the body length, and then i stuck all of the components on! Bolink motor-mount, axles, wheels and rear bodymounts. Tamiya abarth 1000 front bodymounts. Acoms servo and receiver. novak gtx no-limit esc. team checkpoint 7x1 brushed motor. hpi spur and pinion gears. bit worried about the ground clearance.....the body-mounts are a bit short,so this is the highest setting. got a couple of other cars running again....in the background you can see that i've strapped a gopro to my top-fueller...hopefully i'll get some video over the weekend
  2. Done a bit more to the pumpster over the weekend. This was probably the hardest part of the build so far...i wanted to remove a bit of the weight from the original rear bed since i'll be adding a fair bit of weight with the new bed. The cotton-sawing technique didn't really like cutting through the corrugated bits and kept snagging and snapping (probably a few hundred times!), but i got there in the end. Added a rear brace too (for the new bed to fix onto) . cut and stuck on the new bed. added some sides.. ...then some strengtheners before forming a new top lip and side lip.... Nowhere near finished with the rear end yet (i keep getting new ideas ).....but it's getting there!
  3. finally got a couple of pics of my 'little red wagon' chassis next to the 'digger' chassis for you Speedy..... ....having told you that they are very similar,on closer inspection they're actually pretty different! Many of the components are identical (axle, front springs,cross-members), but the actual grp flat bits are actually cut pretty differently....i still reckon it'd be fairly easy to make your own LRW chassis using the shared bits from a digger chassis and making the other parts needed from some 2mm grp sheet. Let me know if you need any measurements in the future. LRW on the left......Digger on the right. Digger in the foreground on this one.
  4. yeah we avoid bugjam now for just that reason dude....the last time we went me and the mrs were woken up by a third person in our little 2 man tent going through our bags at about 4 am. thanks! yeah bring the scorcher along fella!...we had a couple of scorchers racing last year, they did pretty well. The runner up last year was a hopped up Hornet too! No our timing system isn't that great so we have a few qualifying runs each. Then, based on our qualifying times we get paired up and it's into eliminations (first one over the line goes through to the next round, loser is out for good).....We're not on a glass smooth surface though so spins/crashes do happen...it's not always the quickest car that wins in the eliminations!
  5. They certainly do wheelie well. I only ran mine the once, i was stupid enough to put an 11 turn motor in it for it's first run...it went straight up on its back wheels, flew down the road like this for about 50m (gathering speed all the time) .... ...before hitting a bump and rolling over.I got away with just a few light scrapes on the roof but i've been too scared of damaging the body to drive it again! yep i'll definitely get some piccies up of the two chassis' for you when i get a chance. That's no excuse...i haven't had a road-worthy vw for years! (loads of aircooled projects that i'll never finish but none that actually drive!) I'll be going to vwaction in a citroen......again! We race in the monster-truck arena, we just set up a scale 1/4 mile on the tarmac. Generally have a practice on Saturday morning, and then the main competition on Sunday morning. details here...... (ignore the rules and regs, we've ditched them, this year it's 'anything goes' ) http://www.vwaction....tion/rcdrag.php
  6. thanks guys.....yeah i do love a bolink/rjspeed kit, like said they are very basic, hardly any parts to them but they do the job intended fairly well. Its a shame nobody in the UK stocks the kits or parts for them though. Speedybeans....like Markbt said, the little red wagon originally came as a full kit with a pre-painted bodyshell. I got my kit NIB off ebay a couple of years ago for a 'buy-it-now' price of.....£25 !! the same seller had a NIB digger for £20, so i bought them both...i got lucky! There was a seller on US ebay a few months ago selling a batch of old stock Little red wagon bodies with decals and all signed on the roof by Bill 'Maverick' Golden (the driver of the real truck).I've just had a look and can't see them listed now, but it my be worth checking regularly in case they pop back up again.I've never seen an individual set of decals for sale for them though. As for the chassis, reckon your easiest route would be to modify a digger chassis....they are very very similar. The wheels would be the biggest problem since they are different widths and with a different offset. I'll take some photos of my digger chassis next to my Red Wagon chassis later so you can see what's what. If you need any measurements give me a shout.
  7. I know i robbed the wifes sewing kit too!....even having watched that video i didn't really believe that it would work, but then i tried it. It really is a proper accurate way of cutting through hard bodies....when i'd finished cutting through the wheel arches they didn't even fall away, the cut was so thin that they stayed exactly in place!....really handy when you want to put stuff back together again....and for repairing cracks/splits.
  8. ok...so i did a bit more today. got the other side panel matched up and bonded together. gave them a good sanding before fitting...my ocd makes me want the bits that aren't seen to look half-decent too ... Cut the notches and drilled the holes to fit the tail-gate (having it on will help to hold it all square while i bond the sides onto the main body)... Then i just bonded it all in place with the plastic-weld....simples. Jobs for the coming week will be to extend the running boards, get the rear bed sorted and do a bit of detailing (swage line under the rear window and lip around the rear bed). Then i'll be onto the chassis.
  9. ah....many thanks TA-Mark....that's sorted it!
  10. yes mate....it's literally cutting with a bit of cotton!...hard to believe i know, but it works very well, and gives you a very very thin cut. You can even do right-angle turns.Search youtube for 'cutting a plastic body with thread'.
  11. haha...thanks guys! Yeah the sweat will come when i'm about to run it for the first time...hard bodies don't cope too well with hard impact. The tears will come after that hard impact. Wolfdogstinkus, i see you're in northants....no excuse not to come along to vwaction this year. The rc drags is open to anyone who fancies a go...you don't need a purpose built drag car,we have folks turn up with everything from standard tamiyas to articulated trucks! We're a friendly bunch! Well i've done a bit more to the pumpster today but the attach images, emoticon, etc toolbar seems to have disappeared from this 'reply' box?? ...am i being stupid?
  12. Whilst in the mood for filling in, i did the old body-mount holes...won't be needing them. front end starting to look a bit more 'dragster'... time to do a bit more on the rear end now..... The tricky bit was deciding just how long i could stretch the body without it looking stupid. Originally i wanted to keep it exactly the same wheelbase as my funnycar (about 14" between wheel centers), since i know they tend to go pretty straight most of the time. However when i mocked it up on another funnycar chassis i had it just looked toooo long, more like a freight train than a dragster so i knocked a couple of inches off (since i'll be making my own chassis it won't matter)....it'll only be about 12 1/2" between wheel centres now.....still pretty long!! So i cut some new sides, worked out where to locate the rear arches and plasticwelded them in place. it does still look a little long, but this will be a racer (at least once!!), and i need it to go straight! i stayed up late last night/this morning to get one side done...working away in my 'man-cave', fuelled by vodka/coke, very tired eyes and scraping away with a new stanley blade.....not a good idea...i slipped and stabbed myself in the thumb!!....swore a bit, took a photo of my wound and went to bed. Anyway that's where i'm up to......once i've mown the lawn todays job is to get the otherside matching so that i can move onto sorting out the rear bed!! Thanks for reading!
  13. The trouble with using the Midnight pumpkin bodyshell for a dragster is that it has a really short wheelbase.....dragsters don't work well with short wheelbases, they need to be long to stay nice and straight. Something had to be done. I ordered a few bits and pieces. Styrene sheets Grp sheet Plasticweld Clamps Hacksaw the pumpkin started to look nervous.... I tried the hacksaw but it wasn't working well, very messy cuts. Then somebody on another forum advised me of the 'cotton-sawing technique'....i tried it and it worked a treat, so i set to work .... next job was to start getting all of those layers of paint off...i used the 'de-solve it' Graffiti remover. I've found that it works pretty well, it takes a fair bit of scrubbing and scraping but the end result is pretty good.. there was a nasty crack on the roof,so i cut right through it to make it easier to glue up. I've never been that keen on the big glass sunroof on the pumpkin shell....bit too 80's 'custom' for me, so i cut a bit of styrene and filled it in! not too keen on the big glass back window either!! all glued, smoothed out, filled and sanded....
  14. I've been a tc member for a few years but never posted on the forums so i hope this works! Once every year i take part in the Rc drag racing competition at VWAction at Santa Pod raceway,it's basically a few guys and gals having a bit of fun drag-racing our rc cars whilst also enjoying the best VW show on the planet! Every year i try to turn up with something different. Some years i have no choice but to build something different....we crash...we crash quite often....not many cars last the weekend. Last year i took along a few of my cars...all Bolink and RJSpeed kits.... I raced the green dragster,my wife had the yellow pro-stock and i loaned the blue funnycar to a friend! All was going well until ,during one of the elimination heats, something went wrong with the blue funnycar towards the end of the track....it veered off hard left, and hit the concrete barriers at full speed...Ouch! Pretty much everything got broken/bent....even the 5mm thick ally motor mounts were bent like a banana, but it left me with a few salvageable bits and pieces. The esc still works, the motor still goes, the wheels seem ok and the rear axle stayed straight. So i was looking around at my collection of bits and pieces, wondering what i could use to turn this wreck into something different, when i spotted my midnight pumpkin body (which has been without a chassis for some time now).I originally bought the body from a friend (skater Jase on tamiyaclub),who'd had it on his 'Pumpedkin'.....it was the muscle-machines supercharger that caught my eye.... ...and then the Mad Max photo comp came along on tamiyaclub. The Pumpedkin became Lord Hummungus' ride..... So here we are...i've got a Tamiya body,i've got some bits off a wrecked Bolink funnycar, and i've got some ideas floating around in my head.
  15. yep i'll be there.......i've raced them all so far and won't be missing this one... .....we always have a lot of fun trying to get our times down, and it's a good weekend out (vw action is a great show!!!)....get involved folks...everybody welcome!
