  1. I did indeed, I scan all the CR01 threads! Love the blacked out chassis, I didn't have the heart to cover up all the shiny aluminum goodies on mine, though it looks much better in black. I just plan on running around the backyard, nothing serious. in fact, a little slippage from the tires might be a good thing for cyclones and general mayhem. Hub covers it is! Whatever they are, they look much better in black inside the white wheels.
  2. Semi wheels... they are a bit narrower, so they have a bit more offset. Glad to help!
  3. Tires, axles and body all showed up yesterday. Went with Jconcepts Ranger Blues, I have them on another CR01 and I think the size is perfect for this chassis. The others are on 3D printed wheels with built in offset - a little too much, so I went with the new wheels and glad I did - the white is just a classic look. The planetary covers are out getting a coat of black paint. Stance is spot on for a mini monster New cliffhanger body, sitting a bit higher than before. Love the way it's shaping up! Taper on the body works well with the big tires, but I still get a bit of rub up front when turning and the suspension is compressed, I'll wait and see if it's an issue when running before doing some trimming And yes, I did eventually tighten the kingpins. Got excited and forgot apparently.
  4. Love the color combo, build is coming along well!
  5. Just tried the TT02 semi wheel for you - that's a no go as well. Same as the semi wheel, doesn't clear the kingpins. LESU makes a 12mm front wheel with a decent amount of offset. Can't say if they'll work, but they have much more offset than Tamiya wheels. https://www.ebay.com/itm/134121184298?hash=item1f3a3edc2a:g:4g0AAOSwTFNigzSm&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8DlK14vMegPWR9Y9YaTTVHK8WF1qExWzllubRBFcrMgMMWqFy%2BmdFNSAYHSosM%2FEUsljkHXRj%2Bq4IsECz6dI0nFEXQiMrEn%2FEnuybnZn7lcNBb3xb4NTuJupt%2FLk2SudbZvHnNwb%2F0L7JqmUSdzVN0w%2FP38Jd6dcIpwDMt3pQT80vgXgU2zzUgxYoYweHf6cdX112uujRe%2BJkRVmNXZWkFHjrB6S2CTXXlG2CfZad%2FMNLLiGqNgKRVXn1agjLiieNA3vodeV9JFRdUaYVmslhH5AACk5EwebSJHIDMoDvzIbWCc%2Bikw8OQhlo5zupsHhqA%3D%3D|tkp%3ABFBMvvCAjpJi
  6. Might work well in 1:1, but it's the opposite in 1/10 driving. Lock the front diff first, if not both front and rear. Locking the front helps pull the truck up and over obstacles much better as for most trail trucks, that's where the weight is. If you plan a lot of running on hard surfaces, leaving a diff open will reduce some wear and tear on the driveline. If you're planning mostly trail running, I'd lock front and rear.
  7. I do in fact have this combination. Sorry, but it's a no go. Even with low profile kingpins, they are not going to fit. There's too much offset built into the wheel, they hit the steering arms as well. you'd need some serious hex wideners, maybe 10mm per side for it to clear.
  8. Finally finished mine... didn't add the driver yet, but painted and ready to roll! Stock underneath except for the white shocks. Love the look of this buggy! posing with my (dusty) Avante DF03
  9. Jconcepts 2.2 Midwest wheels arrived today, I think they'll look great! Built with the middle offset option. Of course, nothing is ever easy - the hubs are so thick the axle doesn't come out far enough to get a nut on. Nothing a set of TG10 axles can't solve! I only have 2 on hand, so I had to order another set. Body and tires should be here early next week.
  10. The lower mounts have 4 holes, 2 for the spring perch and 2 extra, the link mount for the cantilever goes here IIRC. I mounted it in one of the extra holes. Pic from an older build:
  11. I think it's time for a change... Since I've got several of these, all crawlers and trail trucks, how about finally converting one into a monster truck? Been wanting to commit to it for a while... Chassis is pretty much perfect for it and it's built like a tank. Seeing 87lc2's cool build sealed the deal. Grabbed the wrenches and got to work... Here's what I started with - crawled pretty good actually, but out of my four it's the best candidate for the conversion. The custom chassis was 2 holes shorter per side, and I needed the extra length so I went back to the stock chassis for now. Flipped it around so the battery is now in the back. I tore down the axles and removed the HD lockers and went back to diffs. That took....well, forever and a day pretty much. Those axles have a lot of parts! Went with springs and stand alone shocks - love this setup. I didn't want a ton of travel and high CG, so the barrel springs were fine. Soft up front and medium out back. I had to make some standoffs for the shocks to raise them up a touch - they act as travel limiters for the springs so I had to make sure they didn't extend too far. If I had used the longer standard springs, I could have probably gotten away with it. Shocks are de-springed Axial Icons with 25wt. oil all around. There's a 22t Kyosho Outlaw brushed 540 that's older than the hills hiding under there with a 24t pinion. I had a Holmes torque ring left over from a previous project so I slapped it on. No idea if it'll make a difference or not, but thought it couldn't hurt. Starting with a brushed/1060 combo on 2S for now until I get it sorted. Shaved skid for crawler duty, should work out fine here too, and some random Axial and Element driveshafts. I'm looking for a matching set of lower links, either blue or silver. They are here somewhere on something somewhere. Threw on some Proline Destroyers to get an idea of the stance. I like it! Needs a set of wheels with some more offset, that's for sure. I had to order a new Cliffhanger body - i like the shape and it honestly it looks pretty good monster=ized, but I had already drilled 2 sets of holes in it, and needed a third due to the change in chassis length. Once I get to three holes in the hood, in the trash it goes. I'm an RC hoarder, but not that much of a hoarder!
  12. That's awesome - great to see a CR01 in its element!
  13. I love the Rock Socker, I'd add one to the fleet if I see one come up for cheap. I think it's the best looking body they dropped on the CR01 chassis.
  14. Looks fantastic! Great to see this build progressing.
  15. Depends what you are doing. Any 540 around 27t would be a direct replacement, and no problem at all for the ESC. Good opportunity to upgrade a bit. Going with a 5 slot motor gives you much smoother throttle control as the expense of some RPM and torque. If you are crawling, a Holmes Crawlmaster sport in 16t flavor (5 slots generally have lower turns than 3 slot motors due to their design) is a fantastic motor for $20 - 5 slot so it starts up super smooth. My go to motor for almost all my builds now. For trail running a Trailmaster sport 27t might be your better bet. Closer to the stock 540 you were running previously with a bit more power overall. There's all kinds of motors out there that will fit the bill.
  16. Definitely not stock. I don't think anything I have stays stock for long - I like to tinker. The other two are pretty modified as well, one with a lot of custom tube work. Pics to come! The 10III doesn't have much - just some SSD brass at all 4 corners, front OD and a few body mods. Not overly impressed, it didn't do well crawling, the stock suspension is way too soft. Looks nice though. IFS Element - mostly bolt ons and a Traxxas Sport body Solid axle Enduro - again, lots of bolt ons but nothing wild. Doesn't need it really : My Gatekeeper is running an Ecto body, I haven't run it yet. It's on the list for trail time!
  17. I made a resolution to myself to get out of my rut and drive every trail truck I have at least once this year. I have 2 or three that are my "Go Tos" and the rest just sit. Shame!! So to that end, I've been rotating around with various trail trucks each weekend. So far I've run: Axial UMG Traxxas "Trail" Telluride Element Sport IFS Traxxas "Crawler" Telluride Element Enduro C-Maxx Axial SCX10 III JLU And many more to go... I'll spare you all the non Tamiya's (Glad to post a pic of anything if anyone is interested) but anytime I get out anything Tamiya based, I'll update with some pics. This weekend was sunny, mid 70's and I had sunday morning free...that means trail time!! Went into the Wayback machine and dug out 2 of my 4 CR01's for a little playtime. Ran into a lot of other guys out and about in the woods, not a single one of them even knew Tamiya made a crawler.. First off, by OG CR01 build from 2009, heavily, heavily modified over the years and still running strong. Currently has Holmes/1080 power and a recently installed StealthX to give it a bit of OD. Honestly, this is one of my best crawlers. It's a bit of a belly dragger, but nothing a blip of the throttle won't cure. I swapped over from the Losi Claws to the Carvers just for looks really. The tires are showing their age and aren't nearly as sticky as modern rubber (should have left the claws on, they are still excellent tires) but it got around just fine. Very stable, and climbs like a goat. 4WS is a must for these trucks since no one makes CVD's that I've ever found... with dogbones in the axles, steering is terrible. With all 4 wheels turning though, it's not bad at all. Plus, it's fun on the trail working that rear steering....I have yet to master it. --------------------------------------- Put a battery through the Bug, than switched over to this piece. I picked this up from a friend when he left the hobby (still temporary I hope) and built it up OS style. Swapped to a lighter home cut chassis with standard shocks, but left it mostly intact driveline-wise. Tires make a huge difference... the TSL's were up to the task today. The suspension is pretty soft, but raw grip got me mostly where I wanted to go. This one uses 4ws same as the bug and it's needed for sure. It has a shorter WB, so it was slightly more maneuverable. This one is also kind of a belly dragger. The TVP chassis is somewhat tall, so it hangs down quite a bit. Just had to keep it in mind. Something growled at me from this hole...took the pic and ran. I had the scene from Elf in mind where he tried to pet the raccoon. badword no, I'm out! Only carnage of the day - took a tumble off a rock and landed right on the rear wheel. Popped out the servo! Guess I need 2 screws here... A few moments wrenching and I was back in action.
  18. The pinion is fine, it's the spur gear that has issues. Mine was way out of round, and all but stripped from the factory. Bad mold I guess. I tried to run it anyway and it grenaded in 5 seconds. Common problem with these kits. This pic was BEFORE running! Kyosho knew it was an issue and sent me a spare set of gears right away but I never used them - never had to. I went with Associated 9653 (84t, 48pitch) while I was waiting for the replacement parts and it has been dead silent and trouble free since.
  19. Yes, just cut the spikes off with a flush cut nipper thing and then chucked in a drill and sanded smooth. No idea how they grip unfortunately, I sold the project before running it.
  20. Just built mine yesterday, and wow. The bearing pockets were way, way oversized. I don't think I've ever had a Tamiya kit with this much play in it. Could wiggle the diffs around - not good. I used some of the thin double sided body tape Tamiya supplies ilo the aluminum strips along the bottom pockets - seems to be working well.
  21. Yes, I cut about an inch out, and then used the piece I cut out as reinforcement inside the body. Glued on from the inside with some E-6000. I had to paint on the outside, I was hoping it wouldn't be super noticeable with inside paint, but it looked terrible. Thanks for the kind words! Devastator keeps me on the straight and narrow.. Cup, Hot Rod, and Starscream are all floating around down there too. Galvatron always keeps an eye out (Still waiting for me to finish his truck) and Optimus Primal and Megatron are locked in an eternal dual at the entrance to the hobby room over my VQS. I've got a Transformers/CC01 crossover build in mind, I've been wanting to do it for a long time. Just need to get off my rear and get it done.
  22. Stickered up and ready to go! I really like this body, it comes with the little roll cage, bumper and fake winch. Not a bad body for the price! I may add some headlights to it at some point, but it's ready to go. Looks great with the bob too. Wouldn't be a crawler without a flex shot. I really don't like the blue ano up front - really clashes with the body... but not enough to change it out at this point. I got to work on the body and completely forgot about the bumper. I whipped up a quick one out of brass - it's somewhat hefty which is good - this truck was way light out back, some additional weight seems to have balanced it out nicely. Just needs some black paint and this project is ready for the trail.
  23. Making some progress....slow but steady! Been messing around a bit with tires, in the end I think I've settled on some 4.5" Pitbulls. Not set on the wheels though, I think a set of black wheels will fit the body better. I picked up a set of Gmade sliders and modded them slightly to fit the body. I trimmed a few mm off so they didn't stick out so far and mounted them a bit further back than they normally go. Came out ok and they'll do the job. Trying a new color for me - Mojave Sand. I've been having a lot of airbrush issues, I'm just glad I got it sprayed. I sprayed the bed in black on the outside for a more satin look, and to hide the body butchery. I should have finished in matte clear, but I'm out! I can live with it as is, nothing a little trail dust won't fix.
