  1. Jeez people, not everyone wants or needs a competition level kit, sometimes the "Tamiya charm" is enough. If that were the case, we'd all be running B5's and TLR22's instead of DT03's and Wild Ones. Far better performers for similar money, right? This is the same response in nearly every CR01 thread, and only these threads. I don't understand it. If someone starts a TT02 thread, they don't get bombed with "go buy a Sakura/TC7/take your pick, it's a far better performer for the money, you'll tire of the TT right away" etc. If we were basing all our purchases based off performance and cost, Tamiya would be in big trouble. I'm not going to talk you out of the CR01.... you wanted a crawler, it has to be Tamiya per your post, and that's that. It's the best option given your criteria, and frankly its a fine vehicle for trail use and some occasional rock crawling. Are there better options out there - certainly, but that's not at all what you were asking. Anyway, you don't need to go crazy on hop ups, these trucks are built like tanks. Having said that, I would recommend better center drive shafts as the Tamiya supplied ones are quite flimsy, and the tires leave quite a bit to be desired. Grip is everything, and there are all kinds of 2.2 options out there that are worlds better than the stock Vise Crawler tires. They'll get you going no problem, but should be very high up on the eventual upgrade list. Also, I believe the RS comes with steel bushings in the axles - I'm not 100%, but I remember reading it somewhere. They have their uses in the crawler world, especially if you like running in water but personally I'd spring for bearings every time. Something to think about beforehand as tearing it down to get back to the bushings will take forever. Oh, and the supplied red threadlock in the kit I've found to be way too strong - some of my parts were all but glued together. Some basic blue does fine. Hope that helps. Enjoy the build, it's a good one.
  2. Biggest issue with the VQS is that the shocks bottom out before the chassis does, so any hard landing goes right to the shock towers. It does much better on smoother surfaces.
  3. Yes it does. CR01 is typical Tamiya overengineered, but the closest they have come to a true crawler. It will do just fine out on the trail, and is easily modified when you are ready to do so.
  4. It's an old Axial Honcho bumper, it fits the body perfectly. They are kinda hard to find though nowadays.
  5. Love the Sport body on there, I did the same. It's a great looking body imo and looks fantastic with the IFS kit. I hope you don't mind a pic.. All of my kits use the steel pivot balls. My steering is nice and tight on all three - it does make a difference for sure. I've never tried the plastic ones but experience with Axial kits shows the plastic balls wear out very quickly. After just one run, all of my links were loose.
  6. Awesome! I didn't realize these came in kits, that's good to know. Carisma is not exactly easy to find stateside unfortunately. I've had a couple of Sawbacks now, they are pretty decent kits. Lots of Phillips screws, but it's fairly simple to build and pretty durable.
  7. Almost missed that... I've got a modified T-maxx crawler and 2 Telluride/Stampede based 4x4 crawlers. I get some seriously strange looks when I show up at the trail with them, but they crawl fantastic, especially the 'pede. It's as capable as anything I own.
  8. Not at all, the Stampede bodies are much smaller...1/12 ish or about HPI wheely king size. The F150 is a new mold. Uses a lot of the same parts as the Bronco it looks like. I'm up to 4 TRX4's now, and seriously considering adding the Ford. It's a beauty. Wish it came with a clear body, but it is what it is I guess, and I'd most likely paint it blue anyway. Fall season here is leaf season, 2.2 trucks are perfect for that time of the year since they ride higher and can dig down though the leaves. Of course, that's the season where I run my CR01's so I'm pretty much covered... but it's still tempting!
  9. Not RC, but my brother bought us some little HEXBUG nano vibrating bugs in some kind of battle arena for the kids. Well, the kitties took great interest in these, so my daughter put on one the floor for the cats to play with. Of course, within 30 seconds, it skittered it's way under the stove, then under the cabinets and vibrated there for a day or two. No way to get at it, no way to turn it off...just had to wait for the battery to die. Which it did. Or so we thought. That was at Christmas. Since then, it just randomly comes to life and starts buzzing in the wall. It buzzes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, and shuts off, and makes a terrible racket. I have no idea why it does it, it should be dead by now, but it haunts us day and night. On a side note, we have 2 kittens, and they love to carry stuff around and bat at it. Especially out of my RC workshop. I find random things all over the house. I've found Airbrush stuff, zip ties, wires, and especially tire foams. They somehow get into my tire foam box, grab one, and then run all over the house with it. I have no idea why, but I find them everywhere.
  10. Might be blasphemy, but the Traxxas TRX4 is what Tamiya should have built. The Hi-lift chassis had some great bodies, a steel C chassis, solid axles, a multiple speed transmission, and lockable/open diffs (manually, but they were there) and far more scale than the Bruiser. Traxxas simply took it to the next level. And while it may not look super scale, it certainly drives that way.
  11. I for one am never concerned with what "they" think. It's my hard earned money, I'll spend and enjoy it however I please. I like building kits, I like the quirk of Tamiya, and that's all there is to it. As long as there's still enough of us to keep selling kits to, who cares what others do? I don't understand the basher crowd myself. I find no joy in jumping my vehicle so high it breaks, or going so out of control I crash and need to replace 1/2 the vehicle. (and then complaining it is too fragile after hitting a telephone pole at 60 and shattering) If that's what you want to do, it's your money - by all means. Nor do I have any interest in running with people like that. I watched 3 minutes of the Kevin Talbot video posted in a crawler thread here where he's comparing it to an RGT and turned it off in disgust. In the vid, he comes racing up and crashes right into the RGT. HaHaHa. It's funny. No, you Idiot, it's not funny. If you come racing up and purposely smash into my new RC vehicle, whatever it cost, you get one warning and if you do it again, you'll find your teeth on the ground. I simply cannot stand those types of people. I took my Dynahead to the last G6 I went to, and got a few snide comments from the "hardcore" guys about it being a Tamiya. Stuff it! My little Tamiya went everywhere I pointed it, and left more than a few hardcore crawlers in the dust. I'll gladly take it again and if people have an issue with it, it's their problem, not mine. I plan on taking my CR01 and CC01 to this year's. Sorry, mini rant.
  12. Well, that escalated quickly... Since I wrote that, I've picked up 3 T-maxx's... all for $140 or less each. One nitro - restored with a few hop ups I've had laying around for nearly 20 years: One I've converted to a crawler/trail truck. Does a lot better than you might think, and gets a ton of attention out on the trail. ...and a third one I've converted to an LCG electric basher. Body still TBD.
  13. Ha! My RC life in a nutshell. ... I also ordered mine when it came out, also still not opened. Can't believe it's been almost 2 years. Not looking forward to the body, though the chassis looks like fun!
  14. Very nice! Love that motor, it's very cool looking! (and anything looks good on Lunchbox tires! :)) 2 bits of advice - check the screws for threadlock, my TF was known to leave trails of debris behind it. Most if not all of the screws do not have any from the factory and they work their way loose pretty quickly. I remember 10 minutes into a run and my front shock tower was flopping around. That's never good! Also, check the mesh of the ring and pinion gears, if they are loose, they will chew up pretty quickly. our club's TF2 went through rear axle gears on every run until it was shimmed properly. I picked up a Marlin last year and ended up swapping over to AR44's before I even ran it. Not nearly as scale looking, but much more durable.
  15. I saw this thread and was thinking of the BroDozer from the Diesel Brothers show....:) Love the lunchbox! Wheels look fantastic (as expected!) and the stance looks great. I don't understand the "Carolina Squat" myself, we went to Florida last year and these trucks were all over the place. Can always tell when they are coming up behind you at night since the tops of the trees are well lit. Adjust your headlights people!
  16. Interesting...I think you're into 1/8 truck category here. CEN Ford F-250 SD is 16" Redcat Wendigo/Marksman bodies are 14.5, can easily get 15" under it I think. Mines just a hair under 15. Here's the body on my mat, 15" looks perfectly doable. Not a pickup though. Redcat Kaiju is also around 14.5, but it's quite strange looking. Savage XL body is 15.3, but I'm sure they are hard to find. E-Revo is spot on 14.94...lots of Revo options out there. The PL Silverado has an interesting cutout in the back, should look ok with a longer WB.
  17. Basically, it boils down to if you want a great crawler, look elsewhere. If you want a great Tamiya, then it's worth a look. Well, if we are showing off... This is my first one, backordered when it was announced and still kicking many miles later! I've stripped the rear ring gear, and that's it. They are very durable.
  18. It's a fun build, it'll take a while. They are tanks out of the box, aside from the cheese center driveshafts I've never broken a single part on any of mine. With good tires and a little suspension work, they'll crawl very well. The steering is not great compared to modern day crawlers, but going with 4WS makes it bearable.
  19. Underrated kit imo, it's like a modern TA02 design. Love the look of the body and the overall stance, it's a great looking buggy! Only issue I have with mine is some of the decals are lifting quite a bit. Never run it, but the complicated curves are taking a toll. Really wishing I had taken to time to paint some spots ilo using decals. Looking forward to seeing the finished buggy!
  20. Mine doesn't wobble that I've noticed (Maybe it is, I never really looked) but I have one with the newer style black gear- it is clearly my loudest CC01. Interesting, I thought it was just me!
  21. Reminds me of the old King Cobra build from years past.... Fantastic find!
  22. Looking awesome! Love the motor mount/trans mount idea, ingenious! I would agree the planetary is dragging down the motor, the gear ratio itself is fine. I have a few of those units...maybe open it up and clean out any heavy grease and re-lube with something light? I use red and tacky in mine and while it's smooth, it does add drag. Watch that output bearing on the GRU, it tends to walk out since there is nothing holding it in (as I just found out this weekend). I used a few Tamiya washers behind the pinion to hold it in place.
  23. Love to see some TLT's get some use. The axles that started the crawler craze! Looking great with the leafs installed. I kinda agree on the monsters...I never really thought about it, but both of my 2.2 monsters are pretty dusty. Can't tell you the last time I dug out the SMT.
