  1. Hi Mark, thanks for the input, I will try some 25wt in them. As far as tyres go, for a start I'm going to use some original Brat/f150 ones. they aren't exactly what I would call squishy, so I guess I will have to see how it runs when finished.

The Brat tyres will make you cry on dirt but come into their own on bitumen. I run the original spikes on dirt - the difference is incredible.

The other option is the Frog hex adapters with modern wheels and tyres - if you go that way, make sure you run 2" or 2.2" fronts as well because the little fronts with big rears upsets the balance and handling in a big way

  2. I got the Dremel out today and gave the alloy parts a bit of a polish. I have also posted a photo of the front wheel axles. Maybe I haven't seen enough old R/Cs, but have you ever seen axles with this much wear? They should be replaced, but I will use them for the time being (along with the diff gears) as I am trying to make this a cheap runner.

I also reassembled the shocks. I found the them really interesting, apart from being beautifully made, they have a diaphragm on one side of the piston, I think this is to slow the rebound? They also have what looks like progressive rate springs? Although I have read the shocks are too stiff, I think they are a great example of why Tamiya was the best in the business during the eighties. I have left off the preload spacers for the moment and used 30wt oil in them. They do feel a little overdamped, what grade oil do you guys use?

Oh, and yes I realize the springs are upside down.

I have tried the original shock with 25wt oil and a set of re-re shocks 25wt and the originals are so much more suited to the Frog. The squishy tyres do most of the dampening on the frog and it's still a pig on the track. Mad Racer is a bit of an expert setting up the Frog to handle with Yeah Racing 70mm shocks but if you want to keep it true vintage running stock wheels/tyres the original shocks with 20-30wt oil will do you well.

Look forward to doing some Frog bashing with you soon!

  3. hey total newb here :)

is there any place on the goldcoast to run a RE RE Hornet ( my kids got it for me for Xmas)

Hi and welcome. Hornet is great for the beach as suggested. Also alot of fun in the mud. Hope you can make it to a run soon.

So what are we all up to this weekend? Anyone up for a run somewhere - Beach run maybe?

  4. Hello,

Does anyone know of any hobby grade pistol grip transmitters suitable for small children? My son is dead keen to have a go, but his hands are too small to hold either my Spectrum DX2 or Futaba MJ properly.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Pete

    Hi Peter

My 5yo boy uses the Losi 2.4ghz that comes with the mini-T. Is almost full size but only takes 4xAA batteries so is lighter than most transmitters. Might be upgrading him to an Eurgle unit soon as he is about to get his second RC car. Let me know if you are interested and I'll bring it along next run.

    Cheers

    Mark

  5. As in the on-road on wynnum road?

Cool! On and off road. Tuesday the 27/12 I'm good but If it's Tuesday the 3/1 I'll come late afternoon as I have to work that day.

Nigel's head finally arrived. Here is the F189 Ferrari as I got it - Had an SS head!?!

An now - I didn't have decals so had an attempt at freeehand painting. Got to admit I really enjoyed it and pretty happy with the result considering I can't draw or paint to save myself.

  6. Good timing Peter- I was just thinking about our next run. I think beaches will be too crowded to be honest. I'm keen for some off road fun somewhere, don't care where. Maybe thorneside? I'm off work all next week so I'm pretty flexible.

I'm keen for Thorneside again but only have the public holidays or any day after 4pm.

Merry Christmas guys! Hope you all get what you asked for from Santa!

  7. Did you guys end up running yesterday??

Yeah, had a run with Peter from 3pm til 5pm at Cleveland Coles when the old trusty security guard kicked us out of the car park.

I'll get some pics up of my restored F189 once Nigel Mansell's head arrives in the post to tempt you into buying one some more Brad.

I never thought I'd see the day when Retro buys a filthy ugly "spaceship buggy"?? Can someone check to see if his TC account has been hacked? I'm not convinced it's really Paul typing that :)

  8. Even if there are other cars running, that track is plenty wide so they can pass without any hassles.

haha! I'm sure they will be more considerate to vintage runners than certain off roaders :D

I'm pretty booked up the next few weeks as well but whenever the next meet is I'll try my best to join in.

  9. Would anyone be interested in an onroad night run? Maybe on a Friday or Saturday night?

    Hey Peter

I'd be keen for a Friday of Saturday night run. Have a nice little spot under Aldi Capalaba where a few of us used to drift a few years ago. Ok lit, out of the way and quiet after 8pm.

Not able to do much next few weeks but post up if you head out and will try and pop in.

  10. i really got to stop ! ... i might need electro theropy or some thing ?? i just bailed out of a fleabay auction for a wild one when it reached $180au , it went for $205 ! , when i noticed the same seller had a 1984 FAV on auction as well , i put on a silly amount and look out ! i was the only bidder !

Good Buy! I had my finger on the bid button with 20 seconds to go but thought I better not as I'm picking up a Hotshot, Super Hornet and Blitzer today that the wife doesn't know about yet ;)

If you ever want to offload it let me know - best to wait a few week until I'm back in the good books :)

  11. Will let you know Paul. Have been meaning to offload a lot of cars but haven't got around to it yet.

I vote for a garage sale at Scotty's for the next run

As for this weekend. I'm ok either afternoon after 2pm. Thorneside seems to be the winner. Will have a cople of non-tamiyas as well as my Blackfoot to christen in a dirt bath.

For anyone wanting gear, I'm fully stocked again so let me know if you want me to bring anything.

  12. I thought that the Skyline was hard to drift around (over and above my lack of skill) and I worked out why this afternoon. I forgot that I had that chassis set up to run grip originally and the diffs are still open and not locked up.

That's funny Brad. How to build a drift car... Step 1. Lock rear diff.

I'm keen for some dirt action next run. How about Sunday afternoon again. Venue????

  13. What a fun afternoon. Good to meet you Johann and was great to catch up with Brad and Kumi again.

Not forgetting brothers Paul and Morgan, its always a pleasure. You are such gentlemen and your cars are so well prepared :P:P:)

Next run on the weekend of the 5th or 6th November. What do we all want to do?
