  1. Ok, and now a comment addressing the OP, I have no idea how others in the hobby view people like us who I assume are into Tamiya. At a guess I'd say they think we are slightly odd. Having said that I'd guess that a fair few people who are into RC have at least tried a Tamiya car/truck/whatever. With my own collection, Tamiya outnumbers all the other cars I have by brand put together.....(almost I think. I have about 50 cars, I think 24~25 are Tamiya). Why do I like Tamiya so much? You know I'm not sure. Nostalgia is part of it, their quirky approach to their cars/design, that I like assembling the kits, even though a few of my Tamiya cars are restoed basket cases. There is definitely a bit of brand loyalty thrown in, which is something very prevalent in Japan, which obviously is where Tamiya are from/based, and they really do cater for that market ahead of all others.
  2. If I may jump in here, With RTR you don't build it per se, but you most certainly will be maintaining and repairing it, which requires a bit of assembly and disassembly. You might also do things like change diff or shock oils, tyres etc. That's close enough for me to consider them hobby grade. Not all toy grade cars are bad either. I have a little Kei car and a little Kei truck and my niece and nephews have a blast with them. I also have fun running them in front of my youngest nephew (one and a half) while he chases after them. It might be heresy but I have a bit of everything and think they are all good in their way. The more people into the hobby the better I think.
  3. A long time ago I bought an action figure for my nephews birthday. It was an alien from the film Independance Day. It was battery operated and was supposed to open up and make a yowling sound when the light changed around it. It never worked very well, or predictably. They (Sister, hubby and my nephew) had it sitting around for years, and every now and then it woiuld open up and yowl and scare the poop out of them.
  4. That when it goes missing can hold you up for months. I've dropped/lost parts before, a C clip, E-clips of course, others I can't think of atm. But it's the worst when the part is really specific and can't be substituted, or found easily on evilbay etc. This time it was a little mount for the steering on the Egress, 5mm diameter, hex on the bottom, 3mm thead through the middle. I was putting the Egress back together after a strip, clean, bearing replacement and I moved my left arm and felt something stick to it, then drop off. I've searched for it for hours over several days, even cleaned out the floor in my work area and couldn't find it. It has held my up for weeks. Here is the kicker though. I put the pair of shorts I was wearing that day through the wash, and out onto the clothes line. Took them down...yesterday actually, and while checking them for spiders (I'm in Australia) I feel something in the pocket. I take it out and low and behold, it's the missing part. Somehow it didn't drop onto the floor, but into the pocket instead, and even stayed in there though the wash. I'm happy to have found the part, but it seems almost impossible to have happened like that. Regale me with lost part stories, unless you are one of those actually competent and humourless individuals who never lose bits.
  5. I remember this being done for years actually. Having said that it was often because of leaky shocks.
  6. I have a Hornet in my collection. It is technically my first Tamiya from wayyy back in 86. I can confidently say the driver is original. Everything else has been changed out at least once though. Ship of Theseus.
  7. Those badword dogbones in the Porshe 959 that are pretty much unique, and I need just one, ONE!!! I think they are like 32mm pin to pin. possibly also chuck in end diameter so you can tell if they will fit whatever drive cups you are using.
  8. Ok, now be honest. You own a heap of Traxxas cars don't you.....
  9. I can believe it, not that I ever saw thta happening when I lived there, the fax use was real though.
  10. Now this is obviously not true and a very silly thing to say. I can assure you however that they later sent that drawing to the next stage via Fax. (seriously, as hi-tech as people think Japan is, they do a lot of stuff using old tech/methods)
  11. This is probably no help at all but I bought one for my son back in 06. It came with full bearings and an esc. It was a really sweet deal compared to what you could get in the eighties for similar money. And they drive well btw.
  12. Tape on their knuckles? Asking for a friend (I have four Traxxas cars btw)
  13. Most of my Tamiyas run whatever cheap esc and motor de jure that I can find. Usually run on NiMh, with even the molex connectors still on. I get plenty of speed and run time and generally don't break stuff. Ultra powerful esc/moto combo's and big bashing buggies/trucks are fun, but certainly not the be all and end all.
  14. To add to this thread, something else I've seen is a vintage RC vehicle going for a stupidly high price and the seller quite stubbornly keeps it at that price for a while. Then in what I can only imagine is a fit of pique, taking the posting down and then breaking the car down to parts and selling it off that way, because they want a certain amount of money for their car and come badword or high whater they are going to get it by god! I can't say I approve of this, but there is once again the qualification of my own hypocrisy.
  15. I watch the channel in question here, it's fun viewing, but I totally get it and that kind of driving isn't for me, even with my Xmaxx or whatever. I also watch Tomley, he comes at the hobby from a different angle. I enjoy them both and a few other RC channels besides.
  16. Yeah i really hate this. Except when it is a rare part that I really really need. I dunno, it would be nice if the people who are looking to make to many dollars just chose something else to flip/speculate on.
  17. I understand the parts in katakana, not the kanji though. The translation isn't too bad as far as I can tell.
  18. Anyone else think the track width on this thing looks a little narrow?
  19. No story as such, it's just a Monty Pythons Life of Brian reference.
  20. I use Autocad Inventor where I can. I have used Fusion in a pinch. Having said that, there is a good reason I use those, because the schools I worked at used them, and gave me an educator license while I worked with them. I convert the files to stl when finished and use the 3D printers supporting software for placement etc. I cannot recommend enough, put radiuses/fillets in any sharp corners on your design. It increases strength, prevents cracks or breaks from that location. As good as CAD software and 3D printers are, you have to design taking the weaknesses of the material and process you are using into account.
  21. Tamiyabase? Pfffft! SPLITTERS!!!
  22. Yeah, this site used to have one off the main page, I don't know if it still does or not.
  23. Unless you're into that kind of thing.......
  24. I don't know about the quality of the plastics used in the re-re kits, but to me they feel a bit waxy and a little softer compared to the originals. There has been a bit more flashing than I was used to but the precision was still there. Off the top of my head I have a Monster Beetle, Frog, Fox and Wild One re-re's.
  25. To the OP. One think it is important to remember when looking for a buggy you really want. Be patient, play the long game, or as in my case the really looooooooooong game. There is no rush, as much as you might think there is. Right now prices are ridiculous for almost everything. If you wait long enough and search often (every day), things do pop up, as much as I complain that it is otherwise. Somehow in I think the last year-ish, I've snagged a gun metal gray 2011 Avante, an Egress chassis mostly complete and even a mostly there, beaten up and in dire need of a rebuild Porsche 959. I do this not because I am smart or anything, it's more a case of must needs.....and I don't mind cleaning, fixing, rebuilding basket cases. Best of luck with your search btw.
