  1. Unless you're into that kind of thing.......
  2. I don't know about the quality of the plastics used in the re-re kits, but to me they feel a bit waxy and a little softer compared to the originals. There has been a bit more flashing than I was used to but the precision was still there. Off the top of my head I have a Monster Beetle, Frog, Fox and Wild One re-re's.
  3. To the OP. One think it is important to remember when looking for a buggy you really want. Be patient, play the long game, or as in my case the really looooooooooong game. There is no rush, as much as you might think there is. Right now prices are ridiculous for almost everything. If you wait long enough and search often (every day), things do pop up, as much as I complain that it is otherwise. Somehow in I think the last year-ish, I've snagged a gun metal gray 2011 Avante, an Egress chassis mostly complete and even a mostly there, beaten up and in dire need of a rebuild Porsche 959. I do this not because I am smart or anything, it's more a case of must needs.....and I don't mind cleaning, fixing, rebuilding basket cases. Best of luck with your search btw.
  4. This happened to me back in 2006/7-ish. I went to my lhs to get a couple kits for my sons to get them into the hobby/christmas gifts. There were only two Tamiya kits in the place and a big display of mostly Traxxas and a few other RTR cars. That and NiCad was pretty much a thing of the past and NiMh had been used for a while. LiPo was just becoming a thing. It is a jarring experience.
  5. The thing I like about people talking prices in Canadian dollars is that they are pretty much the same as the Australian dollar most of the time.
  6. I guess it depends on what you actually get out of the box, but this thing from what I've seen is a re-bodied slightly modded RB5. Now, as the owner of an RB5 I can tell you that this is a good thing. RB5's are awesome buggies. Somewhat equivalent to the B4 and pre-dates the TRF201 by a couple years. This would be good for someone who wants to say ...club race with a more retro looking buggy. This should also mean that spares will be available again for the RB5, depending on the plastics.
  7. Yeah, there comes a time when what car you are using day to day really depends on the kind of driving you do. I have a WRX that I have to fix the clutch on. I love that car. I also have a Suaru Outback wagon (auto) that is just better for day to day. Tbh the WRX is a bit wasted on me, but jeeze it's nice to drive sometimes.
  8. Not judging in any way, but I would have kept the cozzie. I get overly attached to cars.
  9. I have my original Hornet still from circa 86/7. The only part on it I can honestly say is from the original is the driver. It's a real life ship of Theseus.
  10. More of these please guys. Is it a damning indictment on me that I've made all of my worst purchases while completely sober?
  11. Oh and, What? Which car? Oh that one darling....no it's not new, I've had that one for years....and no I don't remember me sneaking in holding a large box.
  12. It varies wildly with me, usually dependent on earnings and what I need. Every now and then, like last month, something comes along that I can't afford yet can't walk away from cause it is a good deal and uncommon. That happened last month, I'm skint now. Oh well.
  13. Yes, you do want a Monster Beetle. Possibly the best thing Tamiya ever did (to me personally) was to re-re the MB, and with a revised drive (curse those hex drive shafts, consign them to badword where they belong). It's fun standard out of the box, and is also quite mod-able with several after market bits n bobs out there.
  14. I like it, good thinking. On my ORV chassis I just put the servo in the center and used aftermarket steering rods/cups/balls and a kimborough servo saver.
  15. I did something like this with my Hornet putting a new Venom NiMh battery through a decade or older msa/resistor/silvercan set up. After soldering the wires back onto the motor once or twice and finally smoke coming off the msc for this numpty to finally realise something was going badly wrong. I bought and esc and new motor and never looked back.
  16. I'm good mate, been back in to the hobby since 06 I think.
  17. Heya all. I have a question. When I first started this hobby Radio gear, servos and receivers etc all had different plugs depending on the company who made them. After a long hiatus I got back into the hobby in the 00's I found that most of the radio gear and esc's etc have matching plugs, regardless manufacturer. Oh and Servos in particular came down in price (garden variety ones at least) and were easier to buy singularly. So when did it all change? Background: I bought a very much un-run and unadulterated OG Kyosho Ultima the other day. It has KO Propo esc and servo onboard. The plugs and wire order are some weird proprietary things/arrangement. I'm interested in finding out.
  18. Nice work. Handles pretty good too.
  19. BITD I had no idea what else was out there other than Tamiya. They were front and center because that's where all the Hobby stores and toy shops put them. I first saw the Wild Willy and thought, wow very cool, next ones I saw around were Marui, things like the Hunter and Whatever Jeep truck they had. I erroneously though Tamiya ripoff. Later on a whole bunch more Tamiya Models came around. The first one I actually owned was the Hornet (~86-ish). Then came by a Monster Beetle about a year later. It was at that time a mate I worked with introduced me to Kyosho....every Tamiya persons dirty little secret. I bought his Ultima off him (it had just won the ifmar worlds). I loved that Ultima and was much the same with my Hornet. As good as it lokked the MB ******* me off. Then I didn't really keep up the hobby, for like....15 or so years. Then I went searching for and found Tamiya cars again for my sons to get into the hobby if they wanted to. I still love Tamiya stuff, but I'm somewhat of a brand slut these days.
  20. I have 40-ish cars, about 25 of which are Tamiya. Downsides...they take up a bit of room, Ieven want to build a shed specifically for them. I never get around to using them all regularly, though this is a plus for the more fragile ones. Flat spots on the tires, which means I need to one day make display stands for possibly 40 cars. But, to heck with it, people do collect things, with me it's RC cars.
  21. That is really cool. I'm wodering what he used to make it. I'm thinking something like Hilux running gear/chassis.
  22. I do like it. I'm not sure if it improves anything that much though. Other than the front end at least.
