Dear all I need to buy a set of radio gear for a vintage restoration, and I wondered if when you buy the transmitter, receiver and servos in a bundle like this: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=...amp;ItemID=1967 or this: http://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/a...package-deal-1/ do you also get the matching on/off switch to sit between the receiver and the ESC/MSC? Cheers, Paul

Guys I have an old Bear Hawk that came with all the radio gear apart from the on/off switch. So I need to source a switch to sit between the BE receiver and the MSC (its Acoms gear btw). I can't see exactly what I'm looking for on the usual sites, so can some kind soul send me a link? Cheers, P

De-greasing Old Gear Boxes
Old Falcon Lad replied to Old Falcon Lad's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
OK guys, thanks for all the tips! I've used washing powder for now, and they are cleaner, if not pristine, and for now that will do. A useful thread though. Paul -
Dear all I've just stripped an old Bear Hawk gear box and set about cleaning up the metal and plastic gears with a toothbrush and washing up liquid of 20 years of gunk. It's worked OK, but the plastic gears still look rather grey and a bit, well, greasy. Any other detergent / substance recommended? And also, do I really need to bother as long as I moved most of the old stuff? As ever, thanks for your thoughts! Paul

Supershot And Bigwig Pitfalls
Old Falcon Lad replied to Old Falcon Lad's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Guys This is excellent stuff, thanks so much for the help! Not sure when these things will actually get done, but this information is invaluable. On the subject of decals, am I just being impatient or does there appear to be a lack of Bear Hawk decals around? I need a set, and a TC member has offered me some but I have no idea of pricing (not seen any on the bay to compare). It's not a very 'in' car, so I would have thought the decals shouldn't be too pricey? Cheers again, P -
Thanks guys, this all makes a lot of sense. Not been using Paypal for that long, and it works fine for me as a buyer from eBay. How does it work for a private sale of 'goods' - does the seller set up the trade somehow, or do I arrange to transfer funds to a nominated account, with transaction marked as 'sale of goods' or similar? Cheers again, Paul

Hi all As a new member, I've seen a few items in the trade section from other TC members at attractive prices, but I'm unsure on how to pay and pay safely? How do people do it normally? For example, one member in Europe has a car at a good price, but I've never met him and sending money with no come back seems risky? If there is a thread that already covers this please point me in the right direction! Ta, Paul

Supershot And Bigwig Pitfalls
Old Falcon Lad replied to Old Falcon Lad's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
Myles Thanks for your help. I've seen some supershot repro bodies for sale in the US - are these any good? Anyone got one? Am tempted to look for a HS wreck to harvest for parts, as I assume that even a poor Supershot will command a high price tag in the UK? Or has the re-re shot affected prices? Ooops, realised thats lots of questions in a short post - thanks for all the help again guys! Paul -
Dear all, I would really love to do up a few classic buggys from my childhood days, particularly a Supershot and a Bigwig. Now I realise these are very pricey, and I fancy buying 'projects' to slowly build up, but I'm wary of opening up money pits! Apart from the motors and body shells, are there any other parts that are now hard to find / stupidly expensive? And for the Supershot, would it be an idea to buy a Hotshot/Boomerang to harvest parts first? I'm aware that there are repros/fakes around, and I wouldn't want to blow a lot of cash on a dud either. However, I think there are repro shells around, and I assume these are OK if you're not fussed about 'originality'. Thoughts appreciated! Cheers, P

Beatties Watford for me, not far from Clements departmental store which also went years back. Scene of my Falcon purchase and lots of staring at Boomerangs, Hotshots and other expensive kits. And of course the lovely yellow and black bags. The shop seemed so big and HIGH, but then again maybe I was shorter... Paul

Yes do post pics, especially if you can include yourself with a cheesy grin and thumbs up to the camera! P

Welcome Steve, I'm sure like me you will find the help here invaluable. I remember the Grifter too - the big boys had them, I had to make do with my cousin's hand me down bmx copy! It would seem that bikes, like first Tamiyas date us all too...

All Quick question, an old Hornet I bought came with Wild One adaptors and wheels. I want to put the original wheels back on, and need some adaptors. Does any one know where I can source some? And would those for the Monster Beetle fit? Cheers, P

Dear all Does anyone have a spare set of Bear Hawk decals by any chance? Paul
-
All Can anyone recommend a brand and supplier of a suitable primer for my Bear Hawk shell (when I finally get all the old paint off..)? I've heard Tamiya sprays are in short supply, so wondered if Halfords do something suitable? And are there any glues to avoid when fixing cracks in old hard shells, or will any styrene glue work (i.e. any super glue)? Ta P

Wheel Restoration And Painting
Old Falcon Lad replied to Old Falcon Lad's topic in Vintage Tamiya Discussion
That sounds like a great idea! Any brand preferences, and thanks for the tip! Paul -
All I have a set of old Bear Hawk speed disks, that are a bit scratched and nibbled around the rims. As part of my restoration / rebuild, I've an idea to spray them black, but I have couple of Qs. Firstly, would the rims respond to some form of sanding? If so, what - fine grained sand paper? wet and dry? Also, would I use a standard Halfords spray paint to spray up the wheels? And when doing so, would it make sense to put the old bearings in (to be replaced with ball races) during the task to make sure the apertures don't get full of paint? Sorry for all the dumb questions again! Paul
-
Mark, do you have the part ref numbers for these tyres and wheels by any chance? Sounds like what I'm after. And your beast sounds great, can't wait to see the pics. Paul
-
Ah, nice tip on the Debonder, will have to source some for the tool box. Wilko's here I come! P

Thanks for all the great advice guys, I'll put it to good use. So what were the 6 releases - GH, Hornet, Boomerang, Hotshot, MP and one other? My top 10 is just a wish list, and I have no time frame in mind to complete it! Points noted on costs of rebuilds vs new kits though! I have ideas of building a Bigwig up from bits, but that way probably leads to the dark side... Mark, your Hawk would look good in the yellow. Are you gonna stick with the speed discs or upgrade? And your tires are nearly as slick as the ones I inherited!
-
OK cheers Olly, Points noted. I have a shell with just a few decals on, so I'll try and clean that one up and source a new sticker set on eBay. If I get desperate, I'll post a message in the forums! In reality, finishing off the rebuild with some pretty stickers is some way off yet! Paul

Looking really good there! Out of interest, what did you strip the paint with, and what polish did you use on the shocks? Your car looks so clean - how did you clean up / polish those plastics so well? Paul
-
Yep, it's the bringing an old unpromising heap of junk back to life that interest me too. I have a Hornet that I want to get back working, pretty much standard rebuild, plus a Bear Hawk that will get upgraded wheels, shocks, motor and ESC if I can afford it. On that, would you think a Sports Tuned would be about the best choice for the BH, with a 15T pinion? I'm thinking this plus TEU-101BK, plus some Dyna Storm rims and rubber. Also leaning away from Box Art and towards a hot orange paint job! Thoughts? P

All My Bear Hawk shell (hard plastic) has a small crack on it's nose, between the fastening post hole and the edge (c.15mm). It's not too bad, but the current cellotape holding it in place I inherited has to go! My Q is what glue / substance should I use to seal it up - I've seen a 'hard plastics' glue in my hardware store, would that suffice? And do I simply squirt it in as best I can and rub it down with a very fine grain sandpaper afterwards? Finally (and sorry for all the daft newbie Qs!) what's the best way of removing old decals ahead of stripping a hard plastic body? Cheers as ever for your thoughts, Paul

Thanks Antony, set now on order. P
