That's huge!!
Loool tell me about it, it just about fit on my desk

-
So I finally got round to getting some primer and here's the offending parts tree
I continue here to make the axles
Fenders on
Wheels on
At this point, most of the chassis is complete
Just to add the support legs mechanism
And the rear bumper, which turned out quite well, especially the number plate
Just added the final touches and here we are, chassis complete
And tamiya have done a good job with the stickers, there's loads! I feel they add that last bit of detail
Finally, I just had to...

And just a quick question...
So the container itself is made of plastic inserts with metal rails, can the metal rails simply be sprayed over with primer and then a topcoat or is there any particular way of prepping them for paint???
Thanks
-
So here it is, finally arrived. I chose the 40ft NYK trailer as I wanted a container trailer, but thought it would be different as everyone seems to get the maersk one. I know the colours or the truck and trailer, being two shades of blue, may clash slightly but I have future plans for the Scanias paint ....

Anyways here it is, and the first thing you notice is the size of the box! Pictures just don't do it justice. Thought I'd compare it to the Scania box for scale, and it makes a nice picture
(idk why its upside down?)So I've started the build, only completing parts bag A which I know isn't much, but there is one parts tree that needs spraying before I can carry on, only to find I've run out of primer
. Here's the progress so far...-

Good work

Lol cheers mate, now that would look mad!

So, here we are, 4 years later...

I have (finally) ordered a trailer to accompany the lonely Scania only to find it has been held up in customs, which should be resolved in the next few days (build thread imminent - watch this space). However in the mean time, I ordered some aluminium wheels from stella for the truck and to be honest I was very surprised how much difference they actually make to the overall look. They look more euro spec which suits the Scania much better. I was also very impressed at the quality of these wheels by LESU model sport, considering I had never heard of them previously. This means now that I'm running 30mm wide front tyres which are a bit of a squeeze, but do fit!
Here's what I ordered
The old stock front wheels vs new
The old stock rear wheels vs new

I don't think that you understand..
The 30mm Xtra Speed tyres that I have, have a bulge or belly profile on one side, and a somewhat flat profile that is similar to a regular 22mm tyre on the other side, so depending on which way you mount the tyre on the rim, you can have the bulge facing in or out.. The bulge is moulded in the tyre itself, it is not caused by excessive weight on the vehicle..
Ahh okay i see what you're saying! So i suppose that's the case with that brand of tyre as they have the bulge moulded into them, whereas the standard tamiya 30mm tyre shouldn't have this problem?
I think the 56335 Mercedes Actros 1851 Gigaspace comes with 30mm front wheels & tyres as standard in the kit.
And if the actros already comes with the 30mm tyres as standard, they surely shouldn't be a problem, unless there are any chassis changes that were made?
-
I have fitted 30mm tyres to the steer of two of my trucks, basically because I liked the look of the wider 30mm tyres on the front..
I used the standard Tamiya 30mm wide wheels/rims, but the tyres I used are Xtra Speed brand and they have more of a "bulge" on one side of the tyre than the other (I don't know if the 30mm Tamiya tyres have this feature or not).. If you install them with the bulge facing out, the edge of the tyres can sit outside of the body, and can also cause rubbing issues.. If you install them with the bulge facing inward, they could hit on the springs at full lock if you have done mods to the axle to increase steering lock..
As for differences when driving, I'm afraid that I have not done that much testing to offer any real comment, sorry..
Yeah i do think the 30mm would suit a euro better tbh. I would probably use the standard tamiya 30mm tyres as they are quite hard, so I doubt they'd bulge under load and that should hopefully avoid the rubbing
-
Maybe slightly better turning on the front heavy cab-overs. The 22mm's get quite a bit of tyre roll on the Euros, I bought the Tamiya 22mm hard versions (#56527) and didn't notice much difference, they still roll. I am not sure with the 30mm as they do a hard version too (#56528).
There is also tractor tyres from other manufacturers which might have a stickier compound.
Hmm yeah I've noticed that too about the roll, hopefully a wider tyre would improve that
-
Just wanted to ask if there is much difference in handling of the trucks when replacing the standard 22mm front wheel with a 30mm one, for example is the turning circle affected, does it drive any differently? And if there's anything else I should look out for?
Thanks

give it a really good clean with washing up liquid and warm water . You should be ok giving it a few light coats over the existing paint .
Cheers mate
, will try it and see what happens... -
its just that the paint is thin in some areas (i think i used too much cutting compound) so i was thinking can i just spray on top of the existing paintwork or would i prime it first and spray the top coat on top???
-
Basically I have a R470 cab which is already sprayed but im not too happy with the finish.
I was windering if i could simply prime over the existing paint and spray a new topcoat or would i have to strip all of the paint off first???
Thanks

Was just thinking the other day what the next 1/14 truck would be as there hasn't been one for a while now
i was thinking that they may have a go at making another Euro Truck like a Merecedes Actros 6x2, a new Volvo FH 16 or even a DAF!!!
What are your thoughts???
-
lol, looks like just as much work to do the bearings as the whole truck!
Very cool thread, thanks for taking the time to take the photos, I know it takes ages! I've not seen one of these built up before and I'm very tempted as a winter project.
I realise this is your first Tamiya but what are your overall impressions of the quality - build and end result? Also, how are the kit screws? Are they quite soft (normal Tamiya ones are)?
Very cool and I'm keen to hear your impressions of the new motor too...
Thanks
the build is EPIC - once you have built it you feel a sense of achievement
One thing i have noticed about Tamiya is that their manuals are very simple to follow. My bro got a TT-01 at the same time. After building my truck, it made the TT-01 instructions seem too easy!!!
I definately agree with you when you say that the screws are soft. Im now scared that ill over-tighten them!!!
About the motor...
...I have definately noticed that the speed is more realistic, but havent noticed much about torque
ive tried putting weight on the back and have noticed a slight improvement but thats about it

Today the postie bought me RC Ball Bearings for my Scania R470 and a Carson Poison Truckpuller Motor

-
Just a little update...
Bought some ball bearings, Carson Poison Truckpuller Motor, Telescopic antenna and more ceramic grease

to start with i had to strip the whole truck down and take apart the gearbox and differential to access the bushings to replace them with ball bearings

Gearbox Stripped:

Differential Stripped:

Steering Component

How the truck looked after...

More pics to come once i have fitted everything
-
thanks for the help guys

-
So I should leave them 2 bushings where they are but replace all the other ones???
-
OK thanks, so ill just leave them ones as they are
I see where it says dont replace them but ive heard somewhere else that it doesn't matter if you replace them or not
is this true???
-
Just a quick question...
i recently bought some ball bearings and need to replace the standard bearings in my 3-speed gearbox (Scania R470)
i have used instant cement to glue two bearings, one either side, to a plastic part and wanted to know if there is any way of getting them off
(n.b. the bearings are glued to part J7)
-
I was just browsing the Tamiya USA website and came across this in the 'comming soon' section
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=56329
heres a picture i found of the RC MAN TGX 18.540 4x2 XLX

What do you think???
-
I have also recently seen the new oil shocks (#56515)
does anyone know if they are any good???
do oil shocks make the suspension stiffer than the standard metal friction dampers???
only asking because i like the fact the suspension is soft with the standard suspension which adds to the realism

My first kit was a 1:14 Scania R470 which i only got last month
